Many weeks later, a second letter arrived, obviously the error was not corrected. Called IRS again and got through, no problem. Everything is fixed now. It's not that hard, people.

Word. Best comment for this case. Our eldest is a boy. To my parents, he was special, someone to carry the family name (whereas my sister and I would eventually marry and lose our family name). Entitlement is his game. Takers, not givers. Just because he can, he will. He got more money/inheritance when our parents died, with the collaboration of my mother before she passed. They basically lied to my sis and I so he can have more, under the guise of "everything divided equally". My sister took care of mom for 3 yrs; 17 yrs by me; 0 by brother. Now she's gone and the truth is out -- stings like hell. Women folk, know your value! Don't be taken for granted, don't coddle your men: bf, husband, son, nephew, grandson... Expect a lot from them because we women are givers, nurturers, carers, lovers. Even when we are empty, we will still give. Teaching this young man a lesson thru court is a good idea. He will return to the family, just a matter of time. He needs them.

This case perfectly illustrates why mixing family and finances is often a recipe for disaster. The defendant, who at least had the decency to dress appropriately for court, made agreements and verbal contracts without properly involving the parties affected. Combining family with financial matters can lead to significant emotional turmoil and heartbreak when commitments are not honored, as vividly demonstrated here. The defendant seemed to believe that doing favors allowed him to unilaterally alter the agreement and absolve his debt. Additionally, his thought process led him to think that because he was going through hard times and didn't receive his tax return, he could change the contract at his whim. It's clear he took shameless advantage of his aunt, thinking he could walk away from his obligations without consequence. This situation is not only sad but entirely avoidable.

I think in 2021 or 22 the IRS held my tax refund and their app didn't tell me why. The letter I received didn't tell me why. It was vague something like "We are unable to send you your return due to needing to do something." I received a letter later in the year which said the same useless info. I have no liens or anything like that. I did try to call them once but got to automative system which wasn't helpful, said the same thing. While I wanted my money I didn't want to take the time to call again. It wasn't make or break me amount of money. It's the IRS if they wanted to talk to me the letter would have said so. And since it's the IRS they are not going to run away with my money. I figured I would eventually get it or get a letter telling me when and where to come in. I did finally get my refund before it was time to file taxes the next year. I got interest on the money they held and then had to make sure the next year to put that interest as earnings on my taxes. Still don't know why it was held. So wildly enough his tax issue was probably legit. He still owes his aunt but if I hadn't gone through it myself I wouldn't believe him either about his tax return being held and not told why.
