So lovely to see you growing our native spinach, hello from New Zealand. We had a rat problem with peppers in February, which is our summer down here. I ended up trapping half and getting the dog to find the other half. Blooming pests!

Thank you for watching! Your spinach tastes good! I'm glad to have discovered it. I hope my rat problem ends successfully like yours did!

I'm using tulle netting (the stuff tutus are made of) to protect my plants. Critters hate it as they catch their claws in it. It gives a plant that has been nibbled on a chance to recover and grow new leaves, etc. You can order a bolt of tulle on Amazon or look for it in a fabric shop. For less than $20 I got a bolt with 140 yards on it that is about 54 inches wide. I wrap entire containers with it, and spread it out to entirely cover a row of seedlings.

What a great idea. I have some tulle. I'll try that.

Get the rat bait boxes, that you put the bait in, nothing else can get it, but a rat. I had a great problem in my chicken yard, got rid of them in a week.
@GrammaRosesHomestead4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good idea, but I'm afraid my dog would eat a poisoned rat.

Yikes! I'm so sorry about your peppers! My garden gets vandalized by raccoons and I think skunks. I would never have thought rats would eat pepper plants, I only grow hot peppers for myself. Maybe wood rats. I have 6 cats that might keep my rodent population in check. They are inside outside cats, they have a cat door to get in the house. Only the raccoon has mastered using the cat door so I barricade it at night but I think that angers the racoon and he takes it out on my plants. The struggle is real. Your garden is so beautiful! Good luck! :) Oh I just had a thought for future use. Spray the sweet pepper plants with hot pepper spray? Maybe?
@GrammaRosesHomestead4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Pepper spray is a good idea. I'll make some hot and try it. My cats are inside cats - actually afraid of outdoors. I'm so glad I haven't had a raccoon in my garden. They're terrible pests.

Hardware cloth, the 1/4" grid. Make little sleeves to go around the plants. A physical barrier may be the only way to stop them. Here I kill the rats because where there is one there are hundreds more. I've had several in my compost eating all the worms and most all the things I"d throw out into the pile. It was frustrating. Had to bring out the poison, it was last resort. They had also climbed into the beds and eaten tomatoes and squash and that was not going to fly with this gardener.
