Just started working with a coach recently and this was the first thing he pointed out. I'd never realized how much I was forcing with my wrists and how much of a different it makes. Great job breaking this concept down in stages.

I started coming over the top a few years ago. This created all types of swing problems, particularly with the driver. I perused a slew of videos to fix this problem. That just made things worse by adding too many swing thoughts in my head. This video left only one swing thought in my head and was easy to implement since it takes place in the first second of my backswing. Tried it on the range and it worked. Then took it to a tough Pete Dye course to put it to the real test. Shot my best round in years. Missed only one fairway. It also works for irons, hybrids and fairway woods. No more over the top. Best golf drill video I ever watched.

Where was this video 14 years ago!!! I've been stuck as a high single figure handicapper since a junior for so long trying every different kind of swing imaginable. Having lessons, reading instruction books etc, and not getting any better. Just relying on my short game to save my inconsistent swing. What you describe with the connected lever of not letting the hands move out and getting wristy ( Exactly what I was doing) for that first few feet of the backswing, into the setting of the wrists seems so simple and natural yet I could never figure it out all this time!! My long game finally feels like its clicked so I can get my handicap down and enjoy golf again so thank you Danny 👍. "A good teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary"

@mesillahills5 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. Both Nicklaus and Palmer insisted all of their careers that the first four to six inches of the take away is the entire swing. It is the only place your arms and shoulders can get disconnected from your body and there is no recovery possible after that. I like to feel that I take it back with the big trunk muscles just above my belt line, NOT MY ARMS AND SHOULDERS. And when you do that you get very straight and long as well. Pro's call it "tightening up their swing" and that is exactly what it does. It takes all the crap out of your rotator cuffs which also makes the swing much less timing dependent. And pros swing much more level than amateurs because they swing AROUND their spine with their arms more or less centered to their chest at all times by simply doing this. When done right, the toe of the club MUST point straight up half way back. If it doesn't you have "snatched" it back with your arms and shoulders. No, No, Hell No ! You will never take the range game to the first tee. Timing doesn't last 5 minutes. I was ready to quit the game until I found out about this in 3 part Golf magazine series. It extended my game 20 years at near scratch level.

I would say one of the best explanations of the initial take away in a golf swing. The suggestion that the club face should be parallel with the spine makes perfect sense. I tried this at the range and was immediately impressed by the results. I play off 12 so was able to incorporate this idea into my swing quite quickly. Thank you Danny

Re post this or do another one the same danny , the feeling of pressing the club into the backswing just totally transformed my takeaway and my slice is gone . Five years of big fades or pulls gone . Im shocked tbh .. I have had to alter other things but the real game changer has been this takeaway move , it puts me in a much better position and for the first time in five years i can actually see the ball throughout my whole swing which ive never done before , everything in my set up makes sense and i can attack the ball much more , its been my go to set up feel pre drive now for a while and has proven much more than a quick fix . One of my favorite videos. When I hit great drives it’s because I’m doing this exact motion back and through. Not on purpose mind you. See I’m a US wounded Veteran from the Iraq war. I’m a leg leg amputee and shattered my pelvis and back so to turn back and though with my body is difficult so I guess I’ve compensated by making it wide back and through. Thanks so much. Oh did I forget to mention I have loss of use of my right foot also but I wear an AFO brace and get on quite well. But yes absolutely if there’s anyway I can help don’t hesitate to ask. Went out to the range, behold, my slice is as bad as it ever was. 90% of my shots were mild to nasty slices. It was my first time out in 4 years so I wasn’t going to beat myself up over it but, I wanted to make it go away. So I checked out your videos, went out this morning for my 2nd time out in 4 years, and 10 % of my shots had a slice and only 1 nasty one, that’s crazy! Thank you, very, very much.

As an ex collegiate player who used to be able to save myself (with my hands) from a takeaway that was too far inside, I’ve sadly realized I don’t play enough to rely on my hands anymore. Almost every mistake a golfer makes on the way down is a result of bad positioning of the club and body on the backswing, yet no one practices the takeaway much. As fun as it is to talk about the other aspects of the golf swing, this kind of drill was my go to when trying to rebuild a more reliable swing at age 35. Great lesson!

Danny, thank you. This single tip has changed my game literally. This past Friday I made a concerted effort to do what you say with my driver and irons. On a wet day, I drove 30 to 50 yards in front of my regulars! They couldn't believe it! My previous shots were baby fades, I wasn't getting much distance from it. Now it's either straight or baby draw. That was with the driver alone... irons were just as good. I normally struggle with my long irons, 5 and 4. I can hit them, but not consistently like 6i and below. But that wasn't the case Friday. both par 3s 5i were on the green, one I made birdie. Needless to say, I was one happy camper. Again, thanks for this great tip. I've added it to my pre-shot routine.

Just got back from the range. I HAD to try this out. I was doing the same thing your student was doing. This really helped with all of my clubs. The drill of going half way on the back swing and follow through truly helped especially with the long irons and woods. I was actually hitting draws with my 4 & 5 irons (not consistently) but once I implemented this with the basics of my swing, I truly it it more accurately. I was getting frustrated the last few times at the range. This is a very simple and effective tip. For me anyway. THANKS !!

This has to be one of your best vids ever, Danny. Great demonstration on how the club should work while keeping the swing coordinated and balanced. Excellent video; it will be at the top of my go-to list when my ball striking goes south. This is back to basics, something we lose sight of all too often. Incidentally, if you ever have a better player come to you with a hook/pull hook problem, please do a video and let us know how you fixed it. The hook is my nemesis; I’ve fought it for 60+ years and I’m still fighting it today. I am NOT a happy hooker, especially the snap hook with the driver. If you know what causes a hard hook and have a swing thought to avoid it, I would appreciate the info. Thanks for a great video, Danny; this is really a good one! 👍

Larry Beavens thanks for the feedback Larry, as an occasional hooker myself there can be a number of factors, let me put something together that will cover most of the common faults
@larrybeavens75805 жыл бұрын
Thanks Danny, that would be great. What I “feel” when I hit a hard hook is that my right shoulder, arm and hand have taken over the downswing and just rolled the club over through impact. I think a video on the hook would be most beneficial to all the not-so-happy hookers out there, myself included...

Great video! I’ve heard the concept of the lever before but didn’t understand until now. I see you keep the lever connected w/ your left arm to the left chest/pec correct? Does the iron swing work in a similar fashion? Thanks very much for sharing your expertise!
@DanielMaude5 жыл бұрын
Michael Valdivia I do indeed keep my left arm connected and do exactly the same with the irons too...thanks for the questions

Great video! Nothing like your back-engineering videos, concentrating on the essentials, like pre and post impact positions. A great teaching concept, easy for old guys like me to picture with my shrinking brain. It really helped me to straighten out my drives, now to do the same thing with my irons, although that is a more upright swing...will need to play with the iron impact, pre and post impact. Thanks for the help!

Danny, you’re the best golf youtuber. Still coming back to tips 2+ years old. Will be bringing this one to the range today. Always love the energy in the first sentence of each video, although this one is missing the patented “smash that like button” line I’ve grown to enjoy haha.

Frank Consolo Danny Maude's Instruction has the most innovative approach and technique I have ever experienced in all the years (65) of practicing and playing this great game. I can't emphasize how much I am understanding with greater clarity what it takes to make a successful swing without continuously getting tangled up with mechanics and interpretation.. I just recently became aware of Mr Maude a week ago. I'm cautiously excited. I'm spending a lot of time on your website.

In this video i also realized, that i'm not rotating my breast thru impact, my shoulders keep square. I think thats the reason why my clubface always tends to get closed. What do you think? Sorry for my bad english :)
@DanielMaude5 жыл бұрын
Christoph B. If you can get the hips cleared through impact followed by the shoulders being slightly open at impact then this will stop the hands having to work as much helping the club to remain square

Great lesson. It's obvious when someone shows you! If you break the wrists on the takeaway you lose the consistency of contact with the ball. There was a telling point in the video when you showed how the clubface could come in very open or very closed because the wrists were hinged at contact and I realised that that was exactly where I was losing consistency in direction. I know this lesson was in relation to the driver but I imagine it applies to all of the clubs.

This is typically were I start to lose it. Even more so if I have played alot of golf that day and start to get lazy. I'm a pretty long driver but with out consistency I struggle typically in 85-95 scores. When I'm "on" and doing this excect move not only am I way more consistent I hit the ball even farther....this move feels like it also generates more coil which leads to effortless power.
