The fashion rule I break is that women my age (almost 60) should dress "their age." What does that even mean? I don't dress the same way I did when I was twenty, that would be boring, but I'm not going to dress like a granny either. I've learned what looks good on me and what doesn't. I do still experiment, I think you should stay open to new things, but not slavishly wear the latest trend....especially if it doesn't flatter you. Helena

Love your new hair color, Daria, so pretty for summer! I learned a very long time ago not to follow trends. When I was about 27 I fell in love with a dress at a second hand shop and purchased it. The dress was a periwinkle blue with different colored slubby yarn woven throughout in a windowpane pattern. The style was shirtwaist and it reached almost to my ankles. I loved the way the full skirt floated around my legs, swishing when I walked. But this was 1984 and the dress just wasn't on trend. My mother, bless her heart, recommended that I shorten the dress so I wouldn't look so odd. Against my gut feelings I did so. The dress was never fun to wear after that, it just didn't feel right to me. And to top it off, the next year hemlines dropped and everyone was wearing midi dresses! ARGGGHHH. Never again have I listened to anyone's recommendations that go counter to my own feelings. I don't care what's trendy, I wear what I like. You have reawakened my sense of style by reminding me of my younger days, and I'm looking for pieces that express my uniqueness. Keep up the good work!!

The fashion “rule” I break is that I show a lot of cleavage, because I want to be comfortable. As a big busted woman I find that most button up shirts and sweaters make me look dowdy and much older or pigeon breasted. I choose to wear scoop necks and light knit camisoles under cardigans even though it might too much skin for some, but the options for big busted women are few🤷🏻♀️ so we end up looking like librarians or strippers😅
@wonderwardrobe5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s tricky to find the right fit for big busted ladies. When I have a client like that I also prefer choosing something more open. Button ups and small round neckline only make it look even bigger.

I love breaking up colour tones, combining cool with warm tones. Some of my fave combos are sunny orange and fluorescent pink, navy blue and sunshine yellow, or a crisp snow white shirt with any colour bottom. I think colour theory and matching it to your own complexion are good guidelines for someome who is totally lost, but I feel confident enough to determine what goes together myself. 😊

I wear 70's flares and elephant wide leg jeans even tho im a short guy. Most of the time i do wear cuban heels and platforms (also a kinda no for men but whatever), but I have some pairs for sneakers and regular oxford shoes, i think it looks neat on me and the wide flare makes me feel taller somehow. I DIY cut my shirts into a wide deep V shaped collar that shows a lot of chest but I love it and most the time I Leave it rather raw hem and same goes for very short shorts (again 70's inspire) i think it adds a cool touch to my outfit and i like showing skin because I look tremendously boxy in regular man silhouette :P On the opposite side, I also wear vintage dresses as tunics or kurtas 60s style with my flares (so much fabric cool), so yeah my style is fun but very crazy for the average person, most important thing I feel so confident and nice with my own style and skin!

I absolutely love combining navy and black, two powerful colours that make me feel great! 🥰 I don’t know if it’s a fashion rule, but I shop in both male and female sections (and buy exclusively vintage). Beyond my own gender identity, which is non binary, I always felt that it was silly to have them so separate: as a result, I find that the quality can differ hugely depending on the item. So I find the best in both 😉✨

Efortless is in fact: i wear my clothes, they don't wear me. It's not overdoing it. Not giving the impression that you actually make an effort to be up to the clothes. I totally get it in fact... to be cool, confident and not stiff. Even when one is very elegant it can look effortless. The French are like that... first it's my personality standing out. You see immediately who i am no matter what i wear. And everything i wear will be perfect on me that... it flows. Think of women who wear so much makeup, the hair is so much worked on, the eyebrows are lined etc...
@wonderwardrobe5 жыл бұрын
But the woman you described in the end seems like she just has a bad sense of style 🤷♀️
@anamariafloreaharrison33365 жыл бұрын
Daria Andronescu yes and no. I know people who have a good taste but just look stiff. And it shows... it takes away the beauty of the dress. For me the effortless is cool and confident, the opposite of too polished. I'll think of a better way to explain it... my blood is romanian but my culture is french. Little makeup, natural looking hair, clean haircut, short red nails, classic cuts in what clothing is concerned. I like to joke with a friend and say the perfect dress for me is the one i can wear to the office, cocktail, shopping, wedding and why not funeral:-) if it's black and not too short. I put passion in my closet. I call it passion not effort. It takes time but it is time that i love spending.
@Tamily0015 жыл бұрын
I think the term "effortless¨is more about ¨style¨ and ¨taste¨ rather than attitude...maybe I am not expressing what I think, but here´s an example: I was going out for an errand with my husband, so I put on a black linen pencil skirt, a black polo, tan slippers and grab a straw bag (I did spent some time ahead and already know that this outfit is comfortable, suits me and looks put together)....My husband glances at me and says: Why are you all dressed up?....when in fact I literally put no effort in pulling it together... Another thought: if I were to wear this outfit in New York I would probably just blend in...in Washington - give out I am a tourist, not a local and in Miami - just look ridiculous...so it all really depends on where we are and how people see us... (Think Jackie O - effortless is about stylish comfort...)

Which rules do I break? All of the ones you mentioned and more. 3 colours max? How about 10 instead? No pattern mixing? Whoops I got five different patterns in one outfit. The idea of having a statement piece is also something I ignore because I'd rather make EVERYTHING a statement. I don't neglect basics, but even my basics can be a little extra. I include so many elements in my outfits and it's taken me about 4 years to get good at it, but practice has paid off. I like stuff that is colourful, over the top, and fun. A few people have said that my style looks ridiculous but most people think it's great!

I enjoyed hearing the rules and your thoughts about them. I love your yellow jumpsuit and the earrings are perfect. I see the shape of your earrings picks up on your belt buckle. The rule I beak most often is not giving way to fashion trends. I think it's just a way to get people to needlessly spend money. Some of the things they put out there as fashion trends is simply hideous because they have to come up with new things each season. Maybe I never fall for trends too because I tend to like classic and natural styles.

These rules reminded me of the canditades from the german TV Show Shopping Queen. They are so petty with the "fashion rules". And instagramers spend half of the day prepairing a perfect Outfit and making pictures which will be photoshopped the other half of the day and at the end we think it looks effortless. 😄

When it comes to mixing metal one trick I learned was that you can do so if the metals match something in your natural coloring. For example if you have copper skin and you are wearing a copper zipper it becomes and extention of your personal coloring so its only a repetion of whats already present. Then you can add another harmonious metal. If you have silver hair or blue eyes that lean towards silver then wearing that metal is also just and extention. A person with rose gold skin and golden highlights in the hair can possibly combine the two metals an look interesting. Does that make sense? Try it.

I agree that "effortless" is an oxymoron when discussing fashion. I feel that it's meant to convey the opposite of "trying too hard"; which I worry about doing myself sometimes, but find so hard to define. I'm searching for a better term for "just enough", something between excessive and insufficient.

I really liked the video but I personally I find the last "not trendy" outfit to actually be quite trendy ;) (1:12). Animal print, cropped wide leg trousers, neutrals, mules - all these things have been "in" recently so I just didn't feel like this outfit is the best illustration of breaking the rules. Apart from that - very informative video and I liked the idea of putting q&a in between the fashion rules, made the clip more varied and I found it easier to "absorb" all the details. ;)

A fashion rule I've been thinking about recently is dressing for your skintone. As someone with a warm skintone who loves purple and dark blue, I don't like the thought of never wearing those colors (if I want to look unstylish). Is breaking this rule 'acceptable'? I mean, can I look wearing these outfits? I don't want to look unstylish or tacky, but I really like these colors.
@lopsupopsu5 жыл бұрын
Correction : can I look good wearing those colors, not outfits.
@wonderwardrobe5 жыл бұрын
There is this very common mistake when women that have tanned skin tone thinking they have a warm undertone. I see it all the time among my students. Your skin colour and undertone are 2 very different things. Besides the undertone is just one element out of 8 that you need to analyse to be able to understand what colours suit you. The right colour makers your skin more even, less red, eye colour brighter, eye bags lighter, chin narrower and more defined. The colour that doesn't suit you does the opposite. So you choose :)
@annettehinchliffe41985 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. I hate the term "effortless". It's obvious when someone looks well put together, that thought went into it. I also don't care for the term "dress your age". For me there are certain things I wouldn't wear as a woman of 60. That being said however, wear what makes you feel fabulous and confident no matter what your age.

Does it say something about me that I didn't know half of these rules 😅? I think following or breaking fashion rules can be very much part of your style. I've personally always loved the 'your belt should match your shoes' rule because it helps my otherwise colorful and creative outfits look put together and even classy if needed. The rule about jewelry being made from the same metal is one that I've always broken, the necklace I wore every day since I was 5 actually had both silver and gold in it. Now my glasses are rose gold, and my jewelry sure as hell isn't all rose gold so I still break it all the time. The lesson here is I think once again 'Wear what you like and looks good to you' and don't worry so much about rules or what others think!

I think "effortless" means what´s trendy at the moment: Wearing - at first sight - mismatching prints or colours, leather-accessoiries in different colourthemes or even nailpolish or lipstick that clashes with the colours of the outfit. I don´t know why it´s so on trend to look a bit messy but it makes it even more difficult. I like the look, but maybe because we see it all the time. But what I never like is mixing metals like gold and silver.
@gittevandevelde22085 жыл бұрын
It doesn't fit me at all, personally (also, loose and oversized fits are also considered 'effortless') and I find it annoyign to see the word so often I get throw up tendencies when I see a new video with EffOrTleSS sTYlE in it. But if someone likes it, they liek it...It's easy, I suppose, just act like you're blind for a second.

You wear trends, even if you say you don’t wear it. Maybe you not follow blind everything. But T-Shirts, cropped pants, jumpsuits (boiler pockets) are new in the last years. And it’s okay, this items are modern. When you, as example, dress like a woman in the 1930s, then you can say you don’t follow trends. Trends are not bad at all, it’s natural to dress like other people in your epoch 😉

Daria Andronescu Thank you for the recommendation. Maybe I can explain it in German better, what I mean, but your follower don’t speak all German 🙈 I try it: I mean the change of fashion and style in the last century. My Grandma was born in 1922, she wear blouses, skirts and dresses, but never t-shirts and trousers till the 1970s, these things was not there, not in trend before. I don’t mean the trends, that change every year or season, I mean the change in silhouettes, different rules and rights of women and way of dressing with things, that was not available or thinkable in past times. And this is how I think about trends, I’m thankful for modern clothes, I’m wear trendy but timeless fashion and don’t follow every trend even if I dress like a lot of people in my century, but I’m not a fashion victim and out of style with these items. Your jumpsuit is by the way awesome 😎
