The whole story behind the model kinda fascinated me. And it reminded me of a different thing similar in nature. So if Perturabo was able to complete the schematics for perpetuum mobile from some ancient drawings and theoretical notest, Iron Warriors technically hold the secret to the mechanism to this day. But, only the Salamanders, or perhaps only Vulkan himself, could actually craft such a thing. So Perturabo may still hold the knowledge, yet he is unable to do anything with such a miraculous thing. It's kinda funny that he had a perpetuum mobile built for a little Warhound model instead of just a battery. Makes me wonder if replicating the mechanism would be more difficult, or easier on a larger scale, used for something actually productive. Or if the Iron Warriors ever tried to replicate it themselves. Perhaps Perturabo and the mysterious Mechanicus inventor of the Ironstrider walkers stumbled across the same knowledge, both completing the formula with their resources the ancient designer could only dream of. Having said inventor executed (or excommunicated and forgotten, I don't remember the story fully right now) out of jealousy and petty dogma, the Mechanicus frantically try to maintain the Ironstriders, never turning them off because they have no idea how the walkers actually function. They couldn't bring them back to life. These either perpetual motion drives or mechanisms that are so efficient that they operate for milennia without a refuel or maintenance, a technology the wider Imperium could put to so many uses, is lost, over simple emotions left in the little human remains in few techpriests. The Ironstriders are constantly in motion, be it aimlessly patrolling the wastes of Mars, suspended mid-air while still walking in storages, or put on treadmills to power generators. They're even repaired while still in motion, and those that fall apart or are destroyed are cannibalized to help keep alive the ever decreasing supply of these machines.

This moment perfectly shows the greatest flaws in these two, Fulgrim is a whiny, narcissistic child that demands to be the center of attention “I have no interest in your toys” and yet he *was* interested a few seconds ago, until the attention started veering towards the accomplishments of others and he has always been this way, even before Laer. The difference is that at this point he doesn’t care about courtesies or morality, there’s nothing he cares about forcing him to restrain his unbearable ego. Perturabo is incapable of speaking up and *saying* what he thinks, not until he loses his temper and lashes out, destroying something beautiful, that’s still unbelievably amazing despite its flaws. He wanted to do more than man trenches and shatter fortresses, he wanted to do more than run around in the mud, digging and grinding against stubborn enemies. He designed gorgeous theaters and libraries, he created a fortress that was equal parts defense and gardens. Yet he never said a word. Whatever he was assigned, that’s exactly what he did, never once saying “I like x about this place and the people here seem to like y, so I’m going to build z” Cunts in their own different ways, watching the Heresy shit itself and implode was so satisfying to read.

In all seriousness though, Pert is one of many tragic characters in the 40k setting, we know he started out just desiring to improve conditions on his homeworld, then people started using him for their own gain and that made him all cynical and distanced himself from others whilst also giving him something of a combination of crippling perfectionism and a martyr complex.

He is the most angry (rightfully so once you read more about him), petulant and unimpressible person even for 40K standards in fiction. To have earned his praise takes a collassal amount of work put into whatever achievement you have done or thing you have created. Even though he's a very averagely written Primarch, the small moments like this in the books where he just fucking destroys the ego of someone like Fulgrim makes me really, really like him because of the fact he never wanted to use his craft to make war. He just wanted to build things like Vulkan and to see someone as egotistical putting the achievements of someone like Vulcan down goes to show he did appreciate his brothers even if he didn't like most of them and would willingly defend their achievements regardless of if he likes them or not. I like Fulgrim's interaction here with Perturabo, as well as his fight with Dorn in Santurine. As much as Fulgrim seems kinda like a "stereotypical, arrogant bad guy", I really appreciate the contrast of his personality with Pertuabo and Dorn. While Perturabo and Dorn do have their differences, both Primarchs believe that value comes from purpose. They build massive fortifications knowing full-well walls will crumble, towers will fall, shields will break, swords will shatter and soldiers will die. But all of it had purpose. To weaken the enemy, to buy time, to achieve final victory. To them, a fort with 1 broken wall still has 3 good walls. It still has purpose. However, Fulgrim fails to understand this. He believes that everything should be perfect. If it something is not perfect, it has no purpose. But in Fulgrim's obsession with perfection, he's become blind; doomed to only see the flaws in everything around him. Slaanesh just laughs, drinking in his never-ending torment.
