The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite movies as a child (it’s sort of dark) but still loved it. Showed it to my husband he was not a fan but turns out I still love it! Embarrassed I never knew it was based on a book so added that to my TBR list really quick.

Since you liked The Deep Sky so much, I'd also highly recommend Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. It has some similar concepts but it's my personal preference of the two.

Have you read the never ending story by Michael Ende? I always loved the film, especially as a kid. Last year I finally decided to read the book and I was literally blown away how great it was and that there is actually so much more to the story than what the film shows. I definitely want to read the last unicorn too as I love the movie (I watched it so many times as a child). You must go and see it.

Since you read and liked the last unicorn I would highly recommend picking up the sequel novella Two Hearts it’s so good!! It’s heartbreaking but in a good way :)

I ended up DNF’ing The Deep Sky. I didn’t enjoy reading from Asuka’s perspective. Her lack of self-esteem and confidence was too angsty for me. Just came here to say that I’m pretty sure she is not half white and Japanese. Perhaps at the point where you gave your update you had not yet read the flashback that contained the scene where a man asked her father if he was Mexican. Plus the brother’s name was Luis. So I’m guessing she is half Hispanic or Latinx.
