mark you either need to paint the base and clear in the same weekend or you'll have to sand the base before you clear it ... there's something called the "recoat window " and that's the amount of time that you can let pass and still be able to lay another coat down , same goes for primer but it sounds like you're dead set in priming one weekend and painting the next . which is fine that'll help you get it smooth but if you don't scuff between weekends you'll have paint flaking off same as if you didn't use an etch prime . your best bet if you don't think you can do it all in one weekend is to do the cab and hood in base and clear one weekend then the bunk the next weekend. but don't let 7 days pass between base and clear without sanding

Mark if you want mettalics you realize you can spray the blue you like and before you put final clear coats. You put actual flakes in a clearcoat and spray it over blue then 2-3 coats of clear. If you want the best job possible because you're spending a lot of money..Mark buy a couple quality guns..you need a primer gun and base clear gun. Spend your money on good equipment not princess auto /harbor freight quality crap.. you can't paint the color one weekend and wait 7 days to do clearcoat. You have a small window to top the basecoat. So you better read on the time you have between base and topping with clearcoat.

I second what the guy above said about air paint guns. I'm not a painter myself, but I worked with a guy that was really good at his job, and the compliment I made about his paint habilites he attributed to a specific model of a air paint gun (don't recall which one).

Hi Mark, great job so far, I’m enjoying everything here in Scotland. One tip from one enthusiastic amateur painter to another. Paint in stages, for example, prime everything at once but do the bonnet as one part let it dry then cover and mask and leave up before moving to the Main cab then the sleeper. More work but in confined space and having to have platforms up etc I find find so much easier. Just a thought. Good luck

Love the new clear over basecoate Mark . That is the right colour for Little by Little . Once you have painted using clear over base you will never go back . Yes alot more work but you can do so much more . Have even seen guys put pearl in the first 2 coats of clear , makes the paint change colour in the sun . Like a blue looking straight at it then it gets a purple tinge when you look at a different spot . Keep up the great work .

Mark, I've have many base paint jobs. I recommend that you do the base just enough to cover. If you put much on it, it will pull shine out of the clear. And if you wait more than 24 hours on the base, you have to scuff it. And the scratches might show. Especially with metallic. On the clear I recommend to put on at least 4 coats to wet sand and buff it. I'm only am recommending. I've have made many mistakes. The base, you want to overlap 1/2 the spray pattern. If you overlap more than that, you can end up with stripes. You'll have wait at least an hour to to put next coat on. You have been doing an AWESOME JOB with all projects!!!

Hey Mark, use red scotch bright by hand and it will make those rivets look beautiful all over the truck. What I usually do is I put Scotch bread on my sander and I go over the whole darn thing and it just levels everything out super nice and then when you prime it block sand everything by hand and then take the red Scotch-Brite and Scotch-Brite tow truck by hand your paint will come out beautiful

Lay it on wet that will help you with your over lap . I used a siphon gun for years and put two ball berrings in the cup to keep the flake mixed up . And if your gonna spray flake ground the truck . Lay a chain over the axle. Unplug the battery’s also. Keep jamming Mark!

Mornin Mark, I like the color, I think you are right you found the winner. I never got into doing any kind of body work and all though the fascination was there I never really had the opportunity to do any of it, but after watching you complete one and half way through the second I am very impressed with your ability not only for the base work but you are getting quite skilled at finishing as well, Good job Mark it's looking great. Sorry I didn't get to the Lesco truck show this year, I tried to get a golf cart or a side by side to use for the day but couldn't get one, just can't walk that far anymore. Hopefully get something for next year. Have a great week Mark, Say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.

Hey Mark, agreed, thats the colour! ...couple of suggestions if it's not too late .. next time you drop the stink bomb in the truck,have it running and the vent fans on to circulate the air around the cab ... i know it's not often you paint on the ground but if you paint towards you then it's less likely you will drop crap in fresh paint or hit fresh paint with can/ jacket and finaly if it's possable how about splitting your work area up , put the truck in with the trans am, remove the hood and split the garage area in 2, hood in 1 section sleeper in the other screened off with plastic, then you can work on different areas of the truck at different speeds, while one area is drying you could be preping/painting a different section... looking forward to the next one bud,keep at it. Mike

Hey mark the best way i find for me is to take the bonnet off and the bunk to paint. Like i said i find it the best was for me plus i have half a dozen workers to help get them off and put back on so maybe won’t work for you. Anything other advise i have has already been said. Ya don’t need metallic paint just put the flakes in the clear for 1 coat and don’t base coat 1 saturday and clear coat the next it’s way to long. Can’t wait to see it finished i’ve been following the journey from the start. All the best with it mate following the channel from Australia.

Mark..... Heres a tip about short strand fiberglass..... I learned it from Half Assed Kustoms..... when mixing your short strand fiberglass mix a little resin in to it.... it helps thin it out a bit to help it with spreadability and will make fast work of filling imperfections such as pin holes

Mark if you have the spray gun set with the wide fan two coats of base paint and two coats of clearcoat if you wait 5 to 10 min between the coats its done leave it in the heat once you paint it leave it 20 mins put the clearcoat on and your done

Yes 100% paint under the hood even if it's not perfect it will still look so much more presentable and tidy and it's those extra things like that people notice later look back at some off the trucks that u have seen at shows that u have noticed them little extras that have stood out to u

Mark, a tip when using spray cans is put them in a bucket of warm-hot water for 15 minutes before use. This raises the pressure and make the paint flow nicer. Dont worry they wont explode, this is what they do to pressure test them in big aerosol factories. Also, if you are using 2k clear, you really should have a full air fed mask. Its nasty stuff!
@backwoodzfoto21542 ай бұрын
Excellent work as always mark! One thing of advice i can offer. Rip the tags off your microfiber towels so they don't drag across your paint and leave micro scratches. Cheers 🍻 can't wait to see next week's episode!

Beautiful color choice, I'm heavily digging that paint. Would also definitely be awesome to do the inside of the hood in the same blue, as you said yourself that white would just stick out too much.
@dand39752 ай бұрын
The day you prime LBL you could paint underside of the hood, that way dirt, dust etc from the underside won't get blown into your top coat of paint. I use a rope from the ceiling of the shop to anchor myself when painting 8 ft long truck toppers, hoods and roofs, air hose behind you let it run over your shoulder down your arm to the spray gun. Don't rush, if you wait too long between base coat and clear, you might need to spray adhesion promoter. Quality Spray Gun.
@MrPhantom3792 ай бұрын
Hi mark, you don’t have to paint the whole truck at the same time, you could paint the sleeper,cab and hood at different times. It’s a lot of work to paint everything at once. You could also paint the roof caps first on the cab and sleeper and then cover them up and paint the sides a different day, that will help with not leaning on a wet panel to paint the roof.
