I'm not sure if you caught on eventually, but Joel isn't having heart attacks, he's having panic/anxiety attacks. Him opening himself up to feeling again by caring for Ellie brings up all the trauma of losing Sarah, and he's only now beginning to process those feelings. It's also why he feels especially vulnerable. PTSD is one hell of a thing to deal with.

When Joel starts breaking down at points throughout this episode, my first thought was that he’s no longer numb because Ellie is awakening something in him again so now he’s having to process all of these things that he has shut himself off from for so long. But it’s beautiful because his relationship with Ellie is what’s doing this to him!

Ya, no. Poor dude’s got trauma and PTSD aplenty, nothing’s beautiful about that. He didn’t want to take Ellie because he sees himself as a failure, who can not protect anyone he cares for.

He definitely has trauma and PTSD. What I’m saying is that these things are coming to the forefront for him now because Ellie is obviously a trigger and reminds him of his daughter so now he’s finally beginning to process it.

But if he did not care for/about Ellie, she would not be a trigger for him in that way. So it is beautiful that now he’s allowing himself to care for someone and feel again.

The Depeche Mode song from the ending of episode 1 is the closing song here. It's performed by Craig Mazin's daughter...he said because this episode focused on fathers and daughters he wanted to tie that in by including his own daughter.

Awe. 💛 I love the detail that they put into the show. Another neat little tidbit I realized after watching another reaction, was that the song (since it’s from the 80s) is symbolic of the danger or trouble that Joel & Ellie are now in- like the radio code. 😭😩

Everybody is bringing their A game in this series, even simple body language and facial reaction, you won't feel like it's acting. Tommy has few lines and like Joel, he's mostly giving facial reactions, but you can feel the emotion.

Tess wasn't his wife, they were together, but pretty sure not married in any way, plus when Tess is telling Joel to take off with Ellie, she says "I never asked you for anything, not even to feel the way I feel"....I cried when she said that. She loved Joel, but Joel never allowed himself to really love her.

It's similar to what happened to the game. SPOILER... Joel gets impaled instead of getting stabbed in the game and after he falls off the horse and the screen goes black, the gameplay that followed is through ELLIE's POV, so players would also think that Joel died. They reveal it a little while after that Ellie tended to Joel's wound but the entire gameplay during this time of Joel being bedridden, the gameplay is entirely on Ellie's POV and stuff gets real especially since Ellie is alone fending for herself. Just know that the next episode is gonna be one hell of a ride.

The monkeys are infected and infectious , but it doesnt affect them. and the Fireflies couldnt do anything about the monkeys immunity... I wish they elaborated that in the show. in the game, the Fireflies failure with the monkeys was the begining of my doubts with regards to the competence of the Fireflies when it comes to trying to find a cure. The governments surely have tried during the begining, with all the help, all those resources, but they FAILED. How confident are you that the Fireflies could do this now.
