Thank You Phil... I have not seen that old stump for some time. Brings back memories. For some reason night critters (Racoons?) enjoyed chewing on the trunk which slowly killed it. TONS-OF-FUN slowly watching you turn something I can personally relate to. I am a bit late posting cause I keep re-winding and taking my time. I personally planted that tree when I was younger & still running marathons, wow (my good ole' days?).Thank You Phil and I will be looking forward to all your future turning adventures..... TM

There are so many stunning features that you have been able to release for our pleasure. You have a rare feeling for the wood you turn, a deep understanding of your craft & a keen eye. I am sure Tuffy will be absolutely delighted with the wonder you have released from this root ball. Great grain too for the eye to enjoy & with a great finish. Thanks, my friend, for the pleasure you bring to SO MANY people. Stay safe & well, Don from South Aust.

Hello Bruce. So I got up and brought the bowl back. I'm turning it around exactly as you describe. I see the right eye (& partial left), a long snout pointing to that crack like it's sniffing out what's inside? Kanda looks like a baby Raccoon? Bruce I seriously tried to see a Chicken but all I can see is this weirdo Raccoon. All I drink is water, tea, coffee & creamer (I know I'm boring). HA! Wait, now I see your Chicken with the tip of it's beak pointing to the top of the crack? Ah, maybe BUT that funny little Raccoon is what jumps out at me the most? Oh Well guess I will keep looking? I once saw a dog howling at the moon on Phil's dogwood turning on the inside of the bowl quite a while back but I think I was the only one. It got me going. A dog on a Dogwood turning I thought pretty neat-O but I think I was alone..... TM

Good morning 🌅, Phil, Not mushroom for error, 😂, when you first showed the face, I thought I could see the shape of a mushroom cap, 🧢, wrong sort of cap he does a bugger, 😂. The funny rippling marks that you were appointed to., I think could’ve been a route from another tree, or some stones a rock, 🪨 😂, as I turned something very similar three or four years ago which was a route and it had similar sort of marks, I know you like to keep the bark on, I think I have been inclined to remove it as you would’ve had more grain figuring under that bark, I seem to recollect that’s what I did to mine, all in all it turned out to be a nice project, stay safe, looking 👀 forward to your next adventure 😂, From old dude, 😂 France .

Thank you! 😊 For my turnings, I'm always trying to show the original tree, with the bark, contrasted with the beauty of the finished wood. Yeah, it would have had more beautiful grain to show but no contrast. It's just what I like to do, not necessarily the right thing for everyone.

So nice to have a bowl from your own tree! We lost our 120-year old pin oak a couple years ago, and a friend turned some bowls for us out of pieces we saved. He did a set of three live-edge nesting bowls, two more live-edge with a bit of dark resin (that tree was really far gone), and one “standard” bowl. We’re so grateful to have those beautiful bowls made from our tree. Losing the tree was heartbreaking, but it was so rotten there was no saving it. I don’t know Tuffy, but if he enjoys his applewood bowl half as much as we love our pin oak bowls, you’ve done a great service to your friend. ps … ugly? Ummm … no. It’s different from what you usually do, and a bit bulbous, but gosh … it’s beautiful!

I like it looks pretty cool Phil! 👍 Those spots on the side ya pointed out kinda looks like where maybe a grub worm 🐛 hatched out or something maybe 🤔

Yeah, they definitely look like a grub did them. They were there when I started so just on the outside, that's what confused me. Thanks, Kimsey! 😊

Phil I’m surprised that you think that this masterpiece is ugly. It’s gorgeous! The shape is perfect and the grain and live edge are beautiful. Im sure Tuffy will be proud to display it. Root-balls are always amazing as is your work.

What a good looking piece! I grew up in Ulster county NY and my back yard was a apple orchard. I never knew the wood was so beautiful. You did it justice. Tuffy, I hope you enjoy it.

What a beautiful gift, Phil! Before you began turning the root ball on your lathe, I thought it looked like an elephant…don’t ask…🙄. We loved watching you (as always!) ‘turn’ it into the gem that it is and agreed with you when you thought the finished piece looked like a mushroom cap. Tuffy - you are a lucky guy!
