I timed it so that the scream ended right as the clock hit midnight on new years and I was like oh this would be fun and appropriate. 2020 was really really awful for me as it was for a lot of people but let me tell you that I wasn't prepared for the weird breakdown/catharsis I experienced that listen. It broke me. I sobbed and shook for a whole hour.

Kyoto seems like such a fun indie song about being a bored tourist at first. As with all Phoebe tracks, you dig deeper, and see the relationship of her and her Father emerge in front of you, and it just devastates.

I feel like it only really hit me when I listened to the more stripped back version on the Copycat Killer EP. The lyrics just stood out a bit more without as much production and now I appreciate the original song so much more.

Honestly, this album dragged me through 2020. I have never listened to an album this many times in such a short time and it gets better each time. Amazing. And there is no better theme song to 2020 than "I Know The End" Check out her first album as well. Also incredibly good. I will say it's not as good as Punisher. She has really come into her own in every respect on Punisher, but her talent was already undeniable on Strangers In The Alps. She's also part of two bands: Boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. They released an EP in 2018 and it's also incredible. And she's in Better Oblivion Community Center with Connor Oberst. They released an album in 2019, which I also thought was quite good.

Phoebe was my most played artist on Spotify in 2020. I was in her top 1% of listeners. Take from that what you will. And that was my reaction to first hearing Chinese Satellite and I Know The End too. I first listened to it on the bus to work and I was just sat their quietly crying. Phoebe's music means so much to me, she knows how to get to my emotional core like no other artist.

you're exactly right about the album. I was really underwhelmed the first time I heard it but I gave it a few more times and it ended up being my most listened to album last year. The subtleties and understatedness of this album are what makes it last so long and be so relistenable.
@iainrobb2076
@iainrobb2076 3 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with that. Aside from just a few songs, it underwhelmed me too. I've heard it twice now and think it's excellent. It reminds me a bit of ambient music in the sense that it's not so much about individual moments than subtle changes here and there and overall effect. Good lyrics too, which surprised me, given the naivety of her online political proclamations. Haven't heard her debut yet, so can't tell if this represents a maturation in direction.

I don't really know much about the backstories behind a lot of the songs, so I took Punisher completely at face value, which I try to do with most albums. Taken on its face, Punisher is one of the best albums I've ever listened to, and one of the few in recent memory that I could sit and listen to from start to finish without my attention drifting or getting bored of the tracks. I honestly feel like you’re gonna like Lucy Dacus album even more. She’s so underrated. She’s more rock.

I love her Elliott influence. Ben Folds has a song called “Late” that’s about Elliott Smith. It gets me every time.
