Phoebe Snow was a well known and very well respected artist in the 70s when I was a teenager. She was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live three times: in 1975, 1976, and 1979. When A Different World first aired, I immediately recognized Phoebe Snow's wonderful voice singing the theme song. It is a shame that she is not as well recognized and lauded as she deserves these days. Thank you for highlighting her in this reaction video and giving her the respect she deserves. May she rest in peace. Queen Latifah also gives a beautiful performance of this song that is a wonderful tribute to Phoebe Snow, but Phoebe Snow's performance is in a category of its own.

OMG! Phoebe Snow...a real blast from [my] past. I thought I had one of her albums, but can't find it (yes, an album). I'm pretty sure I saw her in concert in a small venue in the Chicago area in the 70's. Thank you for doing research in this way and speaking about her. She was special. ❤ I do have a Janis Ian album from the same mid- 1970's period (Society's Child and the often played At Seventeen). You might like Janis and, I believe, she's still alive.

She’s one of my all time favorites! My mom turned me on to her voice when I was about 14 yrs, and gave me the album. I played that album just about everyday while in college. I’ve got to find that album, I know I still have it!

Dylan, if you really want to witness Phoebe Snow's octave range, you'll be astonished by "Gone At Last," her sensational duet with Paul Simon.

She was awesome. Contralto four octaves. She is my favorite female singer. Her voice is totally unique and I really miss her. I saw her live in concert twice. She was nominated for song of the year, new artist and album of the year for the album version of Poetry Man (Grammys). You probably heard her on a zillion commercials. A year after the big splash of this song she gave birth to a severely disabled daughter and was told to institutionalize her. Phoebe took her home and cared for her for 30 years. Because of that she could not tour like other people. She did duets on albums of other singers and lots of commercials. A beautiful soul. I have never read a negative article about her There is a KZbin video of someone using her songs to point out her vocal range. She sang a lot of different genres and I heard DJs say that she was not played as much because of that. In one concert she sings rock, folk, jazz, blues, gospel etc. She was studying opera also but never sang it. Just because you sing in another language that does not make you an opera singer! She obviously never was a smoker because she holds notes longer than anyone. Her Live version of At Last is amazing at the end and all the way through! She sang a nice duet with Lou Rawls. With Ladysmith Black Mambazo she was a soloist on People Get Ready. My favorite male singer sang in several languages and even recorded albums in Spanish. (Nat King Cole)

One of the songs I request reactors to do constantly. Along with "Midnight at the Oasis", (live) by Maria Muldaur. THANK YOU!! The album version of "Poetry Man" is insanely good as well. Check it out.
