I can't really sit cross-legged properly, I can't get my knees down to hip level and it's uncomfortable, then I get distracted from the exercise I'm meant to do by the discomfort in my legs.

You can sit on a small tiny box. Moon box or gratz sells a small box that is usually used for people for knee stretches and long stretch to make the carriage shorter. This should help you feel the exercise and not your hips. ANd then do homework exercises that help open your hips. Side note: the shape of your hips may prevent you from ever opening them as much as you want. But, the more strength you get in your external rotators and the more open the front of your hips the easier it will be. xx~LL
