@@richardwoad6477 It's a wise advise. Ironically I want to become a pilot and I wanted to be a truck driver. I was about to do my license procedures but hopefully I've met some real truckers and now I see why you say it sucks. And also my pilot career seems to be an eternal dream because of the money issue. Hi, I am semi-retired as I am (73). When I started flying in 1967, as everyone else, I started on fixed-wing. My first commercial job was a co-pilot on a single engine Otter on floats. We were flying hunters in and out of Northern Canada's bush. I hated it. That fall I got my rotary-wing endorsement flew an additional 50 hours under the training contract and had my first rotary-wing job the next Spring. Most of the helicopter companies I worked for had a company fixed-wing aircraft so when that pilot went on holiday or was ill, I flew the fixed-wing. I also got my instructor rating on fixed-wing. Near the end of my career I was flying to offshore oil rigs in Argentina. My suggestion would be to get a rotary-wing endorsement as there are more helicopter opportunities then fixed-wing. Good luck.
@MrGyngve8 ай бұрын
"My suggestion would be to get a rotary-wing endorsement as there are more helicopter opportunities then fixed-wing. " I am a EASA CPL-H and CPL-A rated pilot. I did my CPL-A because while there are is a certain amount of rotary wing-jobs, there are no where near as many jobs in the heli-industry as it is in fixed wing. The reason for this is that helicopters are almost exclusively flown SIC (except for those under EASA-CAT ops. requirement operating offshore flights/IFR/ALLSAR regardless of seats). Not only that, but The Heli-industrial complex is disillusioned. They pay at a rate far worse than commercial fixed wing, especially in aerial work in The EU. I know the market in the USA pays better in general and have way more jobs then we do here, but even then you are looking at average salaries that are far below that of fixed wing operators on average. An SIC H125 HESLO4-rated pilot in Norway maxes out at about 62000 USD/year. Thats the ceiling! In comparison, a F/O starts out at about that rate and will only see an increase. Of course, if you land a job in The Offshore-industry, you will be compensated just as well as fixed wing pilots, but the amount of jobs in The Offshore industry are extremely few and far in between compared to fixed wing.

I was flying Caravans for a Part 135 airline in the U.S. until the pandemic put the company out of business. A shame, because it was a great place to work and the passengers were very appreciative of our efforts. I was 67 at the time, had been a captain there for six years and already thinking of retiring, so the timing was good for me because I was getting really run down and was able to get back in shape again. Good luck Denys, once a pilot always a pilot. The war won't last forever and you're still young. And yeah, non pilots see only the uniform, the cool airplane and good pay, but they don't see the stress, responsibility and the effect that has on one's mental and physical condition.

At the time I was working on my private pilots license at a very windy place adjacent to the Travis airforce base in California. I often had to crab all the way down under gusty conditions. It was an exceptional lesson to have crosswinds, where in many places the calm air offers no challenge. Enjoyed your pilot log. ❤

But,...the further away I get from the daily grind of flying, the less I miss it. The last few years of flying, it really started to get to me, and I was cranky the last off-day before a new work period. I was fed up with being away, and fed up with hotels. I should tell you this: we had very nice trips and very good hotels and where well paid, but...there's no place like home, and to see your kids every day. Unless I can get a nice job on the Learjet again, I'm going to let it slide.... Blue skies!! All the best to you Denys!, and to all other aviators, whether student or seasoned veteran.

I am 39 working in aviation 20 years. I originally planned to fly, however after gaining a job with my first airline, I quickly realised that flying was not as glamorous as it seemed. I looked at pilots like glorified bus drivers. I managed to get myself into college and worked my way up to VP Technical for a large leasing company. I was actually earning more money than pilots and engineers, despite not having an Aviation licence of any kind. But I was constantly stressed, had to take calls at stupid hours dealing with people all over the world. The company merged with another big leasing company and I took the opportunity to take a redundancy package. It was the best decision of my life. I feel healthy, think clearer and have built much closer relationships with my family. I was so focused on making money and moving up the ladder, I forgot what is really important. I think many of us become institutionalised and don’t think we can do stuff outside of aviation. Realistically, our aviation experience can be applied to many industries. We can always go back to it if things don’t work out elsewhere.

A new house to pay and an illness making air time collecting impossible, the license was dropped. Being a civil engineer, getting burned out... Jumping into bus driving... Being haunted by a terrible work load, schedules giving no time for recreation, abandoning that.... Retiring early to have time for veteran train driving released a lot of pressure. Nice talk, it's hard to put a price on the calm sane life style, airline flying is not that! The bad schedules, noisy hotel rooms (even in expensive hotels), poor diet on the road, missing family for days, constant stress of training and checking and that's not even the flying stuff! The sunrises at cruise with a cup of coffee, good crews and conversation, thrust at T/O, managing a difficult flight, setting the parking brake on the last leg, all good. I still love it after 28 yrs but am leaning towards retirement at 58, things still to do and time is ticking. If you desire to go back try the U.S. even the smaller regional jets are paying big money these days, Captains 150-220$ per hour. Good-luck

You have to follow your heart. Do what feels right. Aviation as a career migh inteliectually seem right, but in your experience you will know what is the right thing to do.

I was also 737 pilot until COVID. Now working in Real Estate with lot of freedom. Also thinking about not returning to aviation because of the exact same reeasons. Even if I got a job in one of the big airlines it might take me 15 years to become a captain and I am allready 35... And I also miss flying so much OMG

actually I am 38, got accepted to a local regional airliner(in ASIA), however am thinking of not joining in. Finished training- CPL through COVID, and did not get offer at that time. I got married, and expecting a child this month October. Found a stable office job to pay for everything including private loans that amounted during training. I asked myself the somber question of whether I wanted to be pilot for the LOVE of IT, or to PROVIDE for my Family, and the answer in my heart was the latter. So, I will be giving renouncing letter to the airliner prob. this month and focus on what I have and can provide for my family. Cannot leave what is secure for something insecure(min. pay OE training, exam, the airliner going through acqusition ,etc..)

I think you follow a path which will do You mentally good. You've got a lot of talents just make them perform to your benefit. A guy like You will always succeed. What you never experienced from what I hear, was a good employer. That will probably change in the future, and you have already learnt the englisch language so go for another to learn. Probably German? Best of luck ! The helicopter you spotted was from that little I saw a CH 53 or a Puma .......given that a F 18 Hornet was also in the sky !
