The Critical Mach Number or Mcrit is the point at which, somewhere around your plane, the airflow will reach or get very close to mach 1.
In order to understand what this Mcrit is we need to know that the vast majority of the Jet Planes, such as, the Boeing 737, the Airbus 320, and so on, are Subsonic planes, thus are not built to fly above the mach one speed.
If a Subsonic aircraft flies above mach one will experience, due to the shock wave, an increase in drag and, on top of that, the lift capabilities of the wings will be impaired.
Since the airflow has a higher speed on top of the wing surface your critical mach number will be well below mach 1, this will ensure that the airflow around your plane will stay below M1.
In the flight deck, we have an indication on the speed tape which is called MMO and it represents the maximum mach number that we can fly.
If you fly close to your MMO and then you experience some turbulence you might overshoot the Max Mach Number speed triggering the clacker if you are flying the Boeing 737.
The clacker is an aural indication that alerts you when flying above the MMO.

Great video! I've said this before but you do such a great job explaining what's going on! Most people can push buttons, turn knobs etc. at the appropriate time and in a specific sequence, the big difference is having a complete understanding and being able to explain the reasons for each button pushed and knob turned... Your ability to provide a complete and clear understanding as to why things are done the way they are and the importance of doing so undoubtedly makes for a more capable pilot. I have to believe they are much more likely to see/recognize a potentially bad situation unfolding and correct it before it becomes an issue. I know the training commercial pilots receive is the most thorough and extensive any pilot can receive. I didn't mean for my comment to imply that some commercial pilots don't understand how systems work or that they don't all have the skills to recognize and correct a potential problem brewing. My comment is more suiting for someone like me, kind of knowing that you should follow procedures but not knowing exactly why and how they are affected by other variables. I think I've babbled enough!😅 Bottom line is you have a great channel, you present your topics very well! Thank you!!

Great video sir!! Sir, I had a question. Is the Mmo same as the critical mach number?

Thanks for your support! The MMO is slower, in order to give the pilots some margin in case of overspeed

thanks for the video, but the critical mach number is not about the point at which the airspeed somewhere becomes supersonic. rather it is the mach number whereby at some point over the aircraft the airspeed has become SONIC Mk=1

Thanks for the video very detailed explanation, however I have a question relating to the maximum speed at different altitude at closer sea level understand Mach speed is higher 661 knots does this mean as the aorcraft can’t possibly fly at this speed at low altitude so the beginning of clacjer over speed will this be the speed to not overstress the aircraft rather than the MMO value ( critical Mach value number as this will not be the issue at lower altitude , Thanks again

Hello capt, how about mach tuck? do they similar ?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thanks for watching!! The Mach Tuck is the tendency of the plane to pitch down when the wing reaches the supersonic flow. The Mach Tuck is an Aerodynamic effect.

why the airflow around the plane will reach the speed of sound? isn't they stay in the same place and the airplane hit them?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 жыл бұрын
The pressure and density will not remain constant thus a change in airspeed will take place

Can you explicitly explain how V(NE) varies with altitude and why? I am making inferences from “staying subsonic” but would like clarification and explanation.
