I do appreciate your insights about this course. I am just beginning with pimsleur Mandarin Chinese. I have already done phase 1 to 4 of pimsleur Russian. For many, it would be strange and boring to repeat like a parrot, but for me it has been really helpful, because, I listen to myself and this, for someone shy, like me, has no price. On the other hand, I cannot do one lesson per day. I do one lesson two or three times before going ahead with the following lesson. Some times the lesson in the morning and repeat the same once again in the evening. I really take more than 30 minutes per lesson cause I go back frequently, so for me is much more than just half an hour. First time the lesson can take 50 minutes but the second time much more faster for the same lesson. Thanks again.

Thanks for your take! I also like the method though as you said not everyone will take to it. Do what's working for you!

Wow, seriously your tones are much better than people that i know who lived in Chinese for 5 years and more. This is after only one month?

@NhatLinhNguyen-ru5lf I appreciate the feedback! Yes it is. Pimselur truly helped me out with this, and distinguishing them too when native speakers use them!

Hi, thanks for the review of Pimsleur Mandarin. That was great 👍I've watched quite a few KZbin reviews on Pimsleur and yours is the only review to describe what you learnt in some detail and show an example of speaking. Many other courses and methods do not put enough emphasis on speaking so it is easy to see why so many learners have trouble talking. Thanks again and I hope your Mandarin is progressing well

I'm so glad it was helpful to you! You can truly improve your listening and speaking so well as a total beginner with it, so really wanted to prove it! Thank you!

Thank you for making a video that lists the basics of what the lessons teach in the main Pimsleur CD set. There's also the quick & simple CD set, and the go Pimsleur CD set.

How's your Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese journey going? How far into the courses are you, and how's your Chinese speaking ability?
@languagetraveladoptee11 ай бұрын
Hi! Going well, I am in the 3rd level still getting used to tones and new vocabulary. Planning to make another update soon!

@@languagetraveladoptee Love your content. I'm also beginning my Mandarin journey. Not easy, but pretty addicting.

@Themindofreyrey that's so exciting to hear! I haven't had time to prioritize it fully but pimsleur motivates me to keep going at least. Would love to hear more updates from you as you progress in your journey as well!

I love Pimsleur, but my problem with it for Mandarin is the lack of more thorough explanations of pronunciation. It was only when I decided it would actually be easier to learn to read/write it while learning to speak and understand it that I realized I was pronouncing tons of words incorrectly. I learned Pinyin and was like, "Ooooh, I have been saying A LOT of things wrong." And it became a bit of a pain to unlearn the incorrect pronunciations. I'll admit that the reading exercises fix this, but they're a bit lackluster and I wish there were further explanations in the audio lessons.
@languagetraveladoptee4 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I agree, the pronunciation is only given 1-2 times at most for lots of words, then for the most part goes over my head as I mimic what I think the tones are. Good point!
@RikosMandarinSymposium-ss4hf4 ай бұрын
@@languagetraveladoptee My problem is even with the explanations they do give, I find myself having thoughts like, "Are they pronouncing that with an 'm' or an 'n'? Are they saying "ing" or "in". Stuff like that. I wish they clarified that sort of thing. Anyway, thanks for the video! :-)

I have been listening to Pumsleur Mandarin for longer than 15 years. Even after 10 years of listening to them, I never perfect them. I cannot tell what the first letter of many words are. For example the word "later" sounds something like "qwar eee whar". A Chinese person told me the first part is more like "gwar". After listening to the lessons every day for a decade I can have simple conversations. Then levels 4 and 5 were created. The new vocabulary shows up too rapidly. The sentences about places being designed and built in different centuries and by different countries is too difficult. I have listened to 4 and 5 for a few years and cannot remember or understsnd the sounds. I have to use a tutor on preply. I need to see the pin yin English spelling to know what pimsleur is saying. Id like to get feedback from others on levels 4 and 5. Something about them is worse thsn 1 to 3 and I wonder if others are having the same experience. It might sound funny that I have been listening to these for 15 years, but I donit while doing other things and commuting.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Honestly I am experiencing some more difficulty in level 4 and agree, they throw sometimes very random and irrelevant-to-me words at you all of a sudden (it was a bit funny and also confusing how it jumped from level 3's "would you like to order something " to level 4 immediately talking about "Chinese society is an economy and the American economy is not the same", then back to "I have a dog"). I'll definitely be bringing this up in my next review, while I'm using it to mainly get sounds, used to listening to tones, and pronunciation, I'll still continue to level 5 and do it through one more time, but with supplemental materials so I can actually start writing and reading to help solidify some of the sounds (and, as you say, correct for what I heard but did not see written)

I noticed that you used zher4 for "here" (Northern Chinese word.) Personally, I prefer using zhe4 li3 (Southern Chinese word.) It just seems easier on the tongue hhhh. Jiayou! Zhu ni xuexi shunli.

Thanks for the recommendation! I haven't used anything other than Pimsleur so don't know anything outside of that. Once I'm done and build a better foundation I'll see more differences and better apply them, including this one!

I’m learning Chinese with Pimsleur (currently on level 2) and I absolutely love the program. They have all the way until level 5 - I wonder to whicg level you reach when you complete the programme (1-5).

ahh so glad to hear you're doing it too! I'm halfway through level 4, level 4 they definitely ramp up with longer sentences, but my listening and pronunciation have improved so much right off the bat! let us know how you also find the progress of levels as you go!
