The world of Oz is in full Technicolor while Kansas, the real world is boring and black and white. Reality is purposely downplayed, the imaginary, make-belief world is more fun. Just like, as you have correctly pointed out, the imagery on Dark Side.

It has to be at the exact moment the third roar ends. If you use a CD of the album, you need to push Play and then immediately hit Pause and wait for the end of the third roar to hit Play again. The few seconds it takes for a CD to star playing otherwise will throw off the sync.

Something has been done to make this sync. There HAS to have been some foreknowledge to this lining up properly. The only way to sync this properly is go sync it with an older VHS version of the movie. The newer VHS/DVD versions of the film have an added segment in the beginning credits, which throws the whole sync off. I don't buy the fact that the band mates had nothing to do with this. The syncing is way too perfect. I can see if maybe one of two songs kinda synced up, then I would fluff it off. But every single song's end and beginning, and key lyrics are spot on. And who would have thought to start the Pink Floyd album right after the lion's roar in order for it to sync up. It was a planned operation, and Pink Floyd DEFINITELY had the 'time' to do something like this.
@FernieCanto
@FernieCanto 6 жыл бұрын
"But every single song's end and beginning, and key lyrics are spot on. " Yes, like when they sing "You race towards an early grave" and Dorothy dies, or when they sing "The lunatic is on the grass" and Charles Manson appears smoking a joint, or when they sing "Money!" and Donald Trump makes a cameo.

You missed a very important part of Dexter's comment: an old VHS tape of the movie has to be used to make the synchs happen correctly. The remastered version of the movie everyone uses on YT runs a few seconds behind the music and it throws everything slightly off. I'm 42, and we watched it all the time when I was in college, using a VHS tape of the movie I got in the 80's and a CD of Dark Side. The synchronization was mind blowingly perfect. And, yes, I have watched it, many times, while not high. The synch is so cool, so spot on, and so obvious, no drugs are needed to thoroughly enjoy it. Even in these sadly off-synch YT versions, you can still see how the tone of the music lines up to the movie scenes. The tornado scene and Great Gig in the Sky is probably the most blatant example. Beyond the obvious, notice how the music suddenly turns dreamy when Dorothy gets knocked out. Brain Damage. At the beginning of Time, the music fits the tense argument w/ Mrs. Gulch. When synched properly, different instruments play the different voices- Auntie Em (drums) Mrs. G.(scary guitar chords) and Dorothy (high keyboard notes)- seriously, it is crazy. I could list a bunch more examples of mood/tone, but this is already turning into a book ... The easiest ways spot the approximately 3 second delay on the YT vids: Mrs. Gulch should first appear *exactly* when the alarms go off. Like, as soon as the tip of her front tire enters the frame. In the YT versions, she cycles in a couple seconds late. While Dorothy is singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, she should appear to be watching the planes heard flying across the sky (which is even cooler w/headphones). The "cha-ching" of Money starting should be *exactly* when the door opens fully (which is to help you synch it back up after flipping the record). Don't judge it until you've seen it properly. There is NO way it's all coincidence. Think about the band and the time. They were totally into visual media and the freaky-artsy scene. Many people into that sort of thing had reel to reel projectors. Dave has said they do/did things (artistically) for themselves, first and foremost. I can absolutely see these guys jamming around and someone was like, "haha, hey, let's improvise some music for this..." Just messing around, as creative, young musicians do ... but it turned into something. So, I think the question is : Why *wouldn't* they do something like this? Transcending mediums. A little, mind-exploding freak out and inside joke for those in the know. A quirky source of inspiration ... something from childhood, a return to something comfortingly familiar and innocent, right as they are crossing the cusp into "real" adulthood and worn the fuck out from all the (very adult) stress that comes with constantly traveling and touring and dealing with record execs (some of the underlying themes of the album). ART. A concept within a concept. Sounds just like the Floyd to me. I think it was done just for them and their friends, for the Art of it all, and certainly not as a marketing tool, as someone was speculating upthread. That's an absurd notion for the time period (and the band), imho. We first heard about it and watched it sometime in 1995/96, when the internet was really taking off. I'm sure people close to band knew about it for years and the internet allowed the word to slowly spread to the masses. IIRC, we first heard about it from someone at a Phish show. :D Ahh, good times. An interesting note: the original, working title for "Any Colour You Like" was "Traveling." A nice fit.

My bad- in the argument with Mrs. G, Dorothy is the drums and Auntie Em is the keyboard. It's been a while since I watched it all the way through. Seeing it out of synch bugs the crap out of me. Remember that people didn't have VHS tapes, DVDs, or streaming at the time. The way people watched movies was either by going to the movie theater or televised airings that typically had commercial breaks. Also, the way people listened to music was vinyl, which required the time to flip the record over. The logistics of syncing it up at the time would require either making a deal with a movie theater or coordinating with commercial breaks, and also coordinating a record flip or having two copies of the album and two record players.

It's an astounding accidental effect based on natural beats. Mr. Baum obviously used a writing tool known as a pentameter that used the same starting tempo that matched with the album. The natural ebb and flow of a writer's pentameter is very similar to a musician using a natural flow of beats in an opera score. All of the artists could easily accomplish such a thing on accident. Either way, it's awesome how timing creates on it's own.

I used to not believe it for a second, then I eventually got talked into giving it a shot. After trying several times to get everything synched up properly, it finally worked, and there are just too many "coincidences" for them to be coincidences. I watched the 2 together. This is no urban myth. If this is a coincidence then its very eerie. The scene changes matches the song transitions and the music captures the mood and feel of moments in scenes. Even the lyrics seem relevant. Search it on "Google Video" and you'll see. Either Pink Floyd used the movie as inspiration and synched their music with the movie or its one of the coolest coincidences that I've ever seen.

If there was no conscious synchronicity, it's a wonderful example of how our minds may subconsciously play out scripts written by minds already long dead without our even being aware of the subliminal connections between our thoughts and the thoughts of another. As an American Indian poet once wrote "Once sounded in the ceremony of life, the reverbations of the drumbeat go on forever."

It's really a shame that reunion never happened in 09. it's an even bigger shame that maybe the most talented minds in rock n roll had to part ways in such a childish way. saddens me to think of how much more great music might have come from that collaboration. their performance at live 8 was incredible and made it clear that they still would have functioned just as well as a group. they should consider doing a tour in honor of Rick Wright.

They're never going to admit it. An admission would kill the mystery, and the mystery has done a lot to help their album sales. If you think Dark Side of the Moon was not meant to be in sync with The Wizard of Oz, you haven't looked far enough into the situation. The video mentions just some of the bizarre synchronicities. There are many more major ones like those, and there are zillions of moments where things happen right with the notes, such as when Dorothy is walking around frantically at the beginning of "Time." Her steps happen right with the guitar notes, and her breaks in walking happen with the breaks in the guitar notes. There is tons of that type stuff. Of course it was planned.

And yet, Pink Floyd during that exact time did fit music to movies in the albums "More" and "obscured by clouds." You don't try to fit the work perfectly to the movie but only so to take the square finished product to make it roundly spontanious. Say what you will, fitting both these masterpieces together does tend to get the mind working better than if they were sensed alone. The whole concept seems absolutely useful in teaching students how to free their creativity if nothing else.

1) Yes, if you loop the album the synchronicities continue; they are not as plentiful as the first go-round, but they are definitely there. 2) Of course the band didn't plan this; the synch is too perfect, too rich for any single person or even group of people to create. Perhaps with today's technology, but in 1972-73? Not a snowball's chance in perdition. 3) Of course it was deliberate; unless you are someone who utterly rejects the idea of any reality beyond our 5 senses and denies the existence of a spiritual realm. Have you poor benighted souls never given any thought to the presence of a Trickster God? Have you never heard of Loki, or Coyote, or Eshu? Come ON. To tell you the truth, my money is on Kokopelli, since he is both a trickster and a music lover.

I can't stand "reports" like this. This isn't journalism, if that's what you're trying to do. You remind me of the O'bots who keep saying "President 0__". It's NOT just an urban legend depending on who you talk to, but obviously those "who" don't matter to you, only the "who" you truly speak to. I love how you completely omit what matters in the world for what you think matters, and speak that as matter of fact truth. Wait, no I don't. This was trash.

Agreed that weird coincidences can show up mixing audio with video. We've all seen this, but with DS of OZ it's shows up WAY too many times to just be a coincidence. It's not crazy to think that these trippy creative artistic dudes could come up with such a brilliant idea given their history of 'outside the box' recording and audio/video mixing. Someone close to the sessions must've leaked just enough to make us take a look. Makes me wonder what other recordings might've been created this way?

Cool, though one of my favorite comments by Nick Mason on the subject was a press interview a few years back where he simply said: " No, everyone's got it all wrong; the whole concept behind Dark Side of the Moon was 'The Sound of Music'. " I've always loved Nick's talent for coming up with quick and funny one-liners during interviews.

My friend listened to Pink Floyd a lot over the years and, yeah, I liked it a lot. Wasn't until I watched The Dark Side of the Rainbow on KZbin when I became obsessed. I know it is a baseless rumor, but it is also a beautiful work of art. I wish the members of Floyd would embrace the legend as a stunning mash up of the greatest audio and visual arts of the 20th Century.

it's bigger than the band, the album, and the film. All 3 are just testaments to their (whoever they may be) power. I'm not saying that Pink Floyd is part of the process or even aware that that is what they were doing. They were young men with talent, seduced and exploited by the seemingly all-powerful. Think about it. If you're in a band and you get signed to a major label, it's like some earthly entity is granting you access to all your wildest dreams. It's mesmerizing.

Pink Floyd died as a touring band over 30 years ago and were really at their best in the 60's when they played high school auditoriums. Who the hell wants to see a band that should be seen in a small auditorium with a nice light show in a Nascar arena? I'll remember Pink Floyd as the cool kids they were. I respect the artists that are left from the original lineup and hope they don't sell out (again) with some corporate perversion of the original act.

I could go on on the syncs forever, but I will remark some very very strange not to be deliberate. Which is which and the witch appears, Black and blue and the black and bluish witch appears. The lunatic is on the grass.. and the scarecrow is on the grass.. a tornado literally sounds like a scream in the sky..... or a gig in the sky. Money and everything goes color, just like money makes everything shinnier.... And those are just some lyrics, the rythm is always perfect as every song change comes with major scenery changes, and the meanings of the lyrics as well. Us and them if like a freaking song made for those weird little dudes and the way they behave is exactly like the rythm of the song. THIS IS NOT A COINDICIDENCE. Theory: This legend came to be thanks to a publication on Rolling Stone Magazine. The info was obviously secretly passed on by the group so people would try the effect ( more correctly called A SOUNDTRACK FOR THE movie. Because they sync in meaning, rythm, lyrics very heavily) They have never confirmed it because the legend would be ruined. The album cover goes from grey to Colors and has a rainbow, That ALONE is a big big big sinc. But the movie has so many syncs that it is just mathematically to much to not be deliberate. The album was done inside a studio and made to sync with the wizard of oz. The dark side of the moon.. like the dark side of the wizard of oz ( remember he was a scam) even those meanings sinc. This is not a coincidence. PERIOD.

@gibbsies The point is that when they made the album they was thinking: ''Hey! It would be cool to synch the whole album with one of the most famous movies in the world. Just to see if we can do it.'' And when it works they'll feel great. If I had a famous band I'm pretty sure I would do something like that. It makes The album even more special.

One of the things you may notice when synching any sensory input is that they can become conflated. It's just association. These can be true or untrue or healthy or not. Say you're listening to an audiobook and playing a video game and they both have something to do with toast happening at the same time. You may think it's an odd coincidence. The part where you tell yourself it's odd is where you can develop false positives about unintentional or random interconnection based around similarity that your linking with systems and patterns that don't normally connect. The more you start associating the more you will develop a pattern between the two. Normally association is good for us or at least a healthy survival instinct, but where it does not serve we usually leave it behind unless we do with knowledge of it being unproductive or just an exercise. Interconnection of normally disparate patterns can be done intentionally or be subtle and is likely to be understood in some areas of media that intentionally link patterns between what is usually disparate even though such a practice would be somewhat unethical, but it is not happening in this example. Inability to make distinctions for whatever reason occurs as both a sort of neurological glitch where you lose track of making distinctions along with a response of logging pattern recognition.

@fonzifan i personally don't want any of today's so called "artists" to make their own psychedelic music, their music is bad enough without trying to imitate an un-imitable band! Pink Floyd has NO equal, and their will never be another band that was as awesome as Pink Floyd. End of story. You make a good point on the fact that we can use our imaginations to create visuals in our heads, and i guess until something happens in the music industry to get the talent back, it will have to do.
