Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on an RX 6500XT... Did we make a mistake?

I upgraded from GTX 745 to this. Words can not express what a massive improvement it has been; I have been able to play games that I couldn't play for over a decade now.

I sold a few PC's with 6500XT cards in them, totally usable for a budget gaming experience! MSRP should have been £99, I picked up mine used all were under £90 so price to performance was acceptable!

The game is perfectly playable at 1080p on a 6500xt, I played half of Cyberpunk on the 6500xt with lowered graphics settings of course. But most of the shooting sections are pretty small so fps is still good. I got anywhere from 55-75. God of War is also playable on low, i got around 85 fps on low. Also both games still look fine on low. And don't forget current gen games on low look like previous gen games on medium-high. For cyberpunk you just need shadows on and can lower most of the other settings and it will still look basically the same.

I find that the RX 6500 XT has gotten an unfair bad rap. We have to remember the context in which the card came out. Used RX 570's and RX 580's were very expensive during the GPU crunch / mining boom ... you could pay upwards of 300$USD to 400$USD for a used RX 580. When this card came out, it was a godsend. Because of the limited RAM (4 Gb), The Ethereum Data was over 4 gb so you couldn't use the RX 6500 XT for mining (at least, not mining Ethereum). So it didn't get priced crazy like the other cards. I own 3 RX 6500 XT's so far (multiple builds running in the house for various members of the family) and the ONLY game I've had trouble with is Star Citizen (which is totally unoptimized) -- I have an RX 6600 XT when I want to play that game. Every other game we play work fine with this card in 1080p. Is it perfect? No. It's got warts. But it works, and it's new and it's under warrantee. This being said, I think the 6500 XT is still overpriced. Right now where I am (Canada), they go from 250$CAD to 300$CAD depending on the model. During black friday, you could get them for around 200$CAD. This card SHOULD be around 150$ ~ 200$ CAD max. Otherwise right now, with the GPU market back to "normal" (whatever that means) .. you would be better off getting one of these Chinese RX 580's with 2048 stream processors than this card. If the price of the 6500 XTs does go down to say, 150$CAD (120$USD) then it's a good price. Performance-wise, RX 6500 XT on PCIE gen 3.0 is about RX 570 performance-level. On PCIE gen 4.0 it's closer to RX 580 perf levels. It's a solid 1080p card and only struggles on super unoptimized games (like CyberBug).

Agree. On a PCIe Gen 4.0 it makes a decent 1080p card. Always felt it was a shame the rep it got, said this in our original review video because like you say, during a crazy time it was a god send. Would love to check out the 8GB versions but haven't even managed to see one yet. The 8gb at the right price would make a good option.

@emiliosp AMDs FSR functionality will greatly help the card as well and you can even use RSR on any game with a 6000 series Radeon which is pretty awesome tbh.

@@TechLabUK The bandwagon effect that kicked in when it came out. A lot of the big reviewers (ie: GN, J2C, etc ...) -- I mean these guys are blessed by having all this free hardware thrown at them allt he time, when you're confronted with such low-end hardware, hillarity ensued. This being said, shitting on a product that was in fact a godsend for a lot of builders waiting for GPUs to come out at reasonable prices gets more clicks as opposed as trying to live with it. One youtube I really enjoy (TechDweeb) did a much more reasonable and even-handed assessment of the card. The audience of the card isn't the guys that play games "competitively" (ie: try hards) ... just your average lambda gamer that wants to play their games at a decent clip in most circumstances. For that audience, the card is fine. But unfortunately, you don't get clicks if you just say "This card is just OK, meh." no you have to say "THIS CARD IS TERRIBAD OMG YOU SUCK IF YOU BUY THIS" type of rhetoric.

One thing it does have over the rest in an average setup seems to be temperature. We have a 45-50C gpu whilst running at max above, whereas the majority of much newer cards are almost always over 60C or even well above 70c, which can't be good for their longevity. I'm more surprised this title runs with a 4GB gpu, but for anyone who isn't obsessed with frame rates or the very latest games (which will soon start requiring much more than 8gb gpus), 30 ot 40fps is perfectly usable. Most current titles and before should run better than cyberpunk. It might also be a decent temporary card until (if) prices lower further, and 2k or even 1080p looks more than decent on a 2K 27 inch monitor provided you don't have your face pressed up against the screen, lol

I have this card running on PCIe 3.0, every other game runs fine on 1080p, but for some reason, Cyberpunk 2077 it's the only one with inconsistent FPS, no matter the graphic preset or resolution. Another thing I've noticed, not only with my card, but with other benchmarks on KZbin, while in other games it draws up to 80w, in Cyberpunk 2077 it stays on 60w average.

I am currently using how RX6500XT originally should have been used i.e. as a dGPU in cheap gaming laptops (RX6550M) and to be honest it's... well fine for casual gaming. The whole laptop was just 429USD and it was paired also with Ryzen 5 7535HS and 144Hz screen and honestly with such cheap gaming laptops nowadays it's absolutely pointless to build brand new low budget gaming PCs or buy low cost pre-builds - it's always most expensive and more inconvenient compared to similarly specced budget gaming laptop. Brand new Desktop PC gaming is now more luxurious than ever.
