I have just gone thru hell in Texas. After our huge Arctic freeze (Reached lows never recorded in Texas before) I had a water leak under my 1933 pier and beam house. The house was what was called back then a Craftsman, 1 and 1/2 story. Which basically means you walk under my house. That is right, it is not a crawl space, it is WALK upright space. SO......plumber comes out and says yep you have a leak, plus about 12 more. It will cost you 250 for each leak in your copper pipes. 3,200 dollars to fix. I called my son and he went NUTS...he said hell no, call another plumber. I called another man who came out. Said I had 5 total leaks and he repaired them all, replaced an out side faucet and added a cut off valve to the whole house so I don't have to walk down the frozen steps to the street if I need to shut off the water. The bill was 606.00 . I live in a nice part of town (Historic district) but I am not rich and living on my retirement. It makes me sick that someone living in my community would have tried to con me. The young honest plumber I have told everyone about him.....but I have also told everyone about the crook plumber too. And believe me as a widowed, retired old lady, I have lots of time to do a hell of a lot of talking!

You have to be careful with old gate valves because if they haven't been turned on or shut in a long time the packing nut, which holds down the washer to make the seal will start to leak, alot of "plumbers" won't bother with it it if that's not what they're directly there for. That's a huge reason why gate valves are replaced with ball valves besides boiler drains

Key sentence there is you don't tell anybody. May seem like a good deed to just fix it and let the home owner know but then you're now liable for it if anything happens in the future and you were the last known person to touch it. For something simple like that, you'll probably get away with it either way but just as an FYI to anybody else out there; either fix it and don't tell anybody or don't touch it at all even if it's a relatively simple fix. As a plumber myself, I don't touch anything that is outside of my trade for liability sake. the more videos i watch, the more i realize that for plumbers there needs to be a seperate entity that does testing to those that do fixing. this might be for service work in general, but it is clear that bad actors can continue to get away with straight up scamming unsuspecting people. my thinking (though naive) is that by creating a seperation between incentives you would combat some problems that exists and is pervasive in service industries like plumbers, mechanics and a lot more industries.
@premiumfruits35284 жыл бұрын
idk about where Roger operates(Dallas?), but here in San Antonio there is a separate entity, any excavation like this requires city permits and an engineer to come inspect the work before it's filled back in, the engineer would have seen that leak and not signed off on the job, I would assume Dallas has the same laws, but from other things you can see in the video it looks like the owner got a McPlumber from their local Home Depot parking lot, so it's a certainty that there were no permits or city engineers involved because they require licenses to be shown before they do anything

Do like B. Lonewolf said. The Better Business Bureau is a great place to start and see what sort of complaints have been made and efforts to satisfy those complaints the plumber made; everybody makes mistakes but the good people do what they can to correct them. Bad plumbers might also have had lawsuits filed against them so you can check with the county clerk or whoever keeps those records. You can also ask for referrals as well. If they have plenty of satisfied customers they would be more than happy to let you talk to them. If they refuse, they most likely have no satisfied customers.

When the company I worked for from 1988-2016 started drug testing in 1994 we lost half of our plumbers. 45% became ineligible right off the bat, the other 5% left one by one after getting caught being dirty. Drug problems and money problems go hand in hand which means they were ripping customers off for bigger commission paychecks to pay for their drug habit. A lot of applicants will clean up for the application pee test only to resume their bad habits after getting hired. I guess there's a lot of drugs and alcohol in the plumbing industry.

Love the professionalism, yes you could use the customer's hose but, to me it looks much more professional to have a trade come in with their tools and use their tools. It's like a carpenter comeing to frame a basement and using the customers tools instead of his own.

Also, what if the customer doesn't have a hose (or they have it stowed away in a shed or something). May as well come prepared.

I think theres a difference between using one simple item like a hose or ladder thats nearby your workspace versus borrowing their whole tool box or their powertools. Plus the benefit to the customer of charging less job time because your making less trips to and from your work vehicle.

Yes they do but it is also easier to just look at the picture, especially if suing the other company for fraud or whatever instead of having a pile of paperwork to pull out time stamps.

I thought the top of clean outs would be dry, unless it's clogged downstream, which is a different issue. What's the big deal that the cap was not glued on perfectly ?
@mjs31883 жыл бұрын
Because it's a sign of shoddy work in general. I'm not even a plumber but I know how to glue PVC together so it doesn't leak. It's not hard. If the plumber was that sloppy on such a simple thing, how did he do on the rest of it?

For the love god, did you even read the invoices from the other two companies. Neither one said it needed to be replaced. Plumber 1 quote was for the toilet, flange and to put the two way clean outs in. The second plumber came along and just put a camera down the line (because there were not two way clean outs) and invoiced as such. Most of the bad mouthing you did is for an issue that neither plumber said. And no, I don’t work for either of these companies.
@killernat4 жыл бұрын
im suprised so few other people caught that aswell
@henryngov1914 жыл бұрын
First one was a quote to do the test but if you look at description of what they said that it for sure has a leak. Just dont know where exactly unless they installed the stuff that they did. So it seems that they "found" the leak and told them they need to replace sewer line hence 2nd test. Before raging maybe reread and think before responding so harshly.
@DMurray064 жыл бұрын
@@henryngov191 I rewatched the video, because I have been wrong before. But nowhere in the first plumbing’s invoice/quote did it say there was a leak. Pause the video when he shows it. Edit: the invoice says that if/when they test and IF it came back that there was a leak, they would not be able to locate it, it would just show that there was a leak.
@henryngov1914 жыл бұрын
It says that a drain test will not provide a location of a leak but only provide that there is one. They also say in order to do a hydro-static drain test (which they said they needed, proved by them saying they will return following day to do the test) they would have to replace toilet and double cleanouts. If you put it all together it means they ran the hydro-static test in order to find the location of a leak. The guy didnt take a pic of a quote (idk if it was formally given or if that 50k was just the customer exagerating) but it wouldnt make sense for the customer to hire a 2nd company to run a camera to check for leaks if the 1st company said your good to go.
@henryngov1914 жыл бұрын
Also the 2nd company did not say they wouldnt do the hydro-static test because there wasnt a 2 way cleanout they said that the only accurate way was to do a different test but the pipes were old. Nothing to do with the 2 way clean out

I worked for what I thought was a very respectful company, the guy I was under ripped off every single person he went to. We did a sewer and instead of doing it correctly he replaced everything except what was under the foundation. It was a 15k job and he dumped the the driveway surface under the new driveway. Another job he replaced the toilet and it was fine. I left the job soon after.
