Found this while I was about to start a playthrough of Viet Emerald. For those who didn't know, this in itself is not badly translated. What inspired it, however... Elf Coach's ROM hacks inspired by a legendary bootleg nicknamed Pokemon Vietnamese Crystal. The bootleg's nickname comes from it being found for sale in Vietnam, but folks who have studied it figured that it was originally Japanese Crystal smuggled into China, then translated to Chinese, and then the Chinese translation was used by the bootleggers to make an English bootleg. Viet Crystal is legit a comedy classic, including the player's mom making Volcano Bakemeat and Silver declaring his love for you when he doesn't call you a worm or rant about the trashy men in Missile Bomb. 😂 If folks have never seen any playthroughs of Viet Crystal, I highly recommend them (if there are any Vinesauce fans here, Joel has played it). Elf Coach, besides making an Emerald hack inspired by Viet Crystal, has also made HGSS and Platinum ones as well. Edit: I forgot to add, Viet Emerald is even funnier to try to decipher if you play as May. Brendan's name is "You". 😂 It follows the usual conventions in the Viet-s5yle games, where names are based on Chinese versions of the Japanese names - I just checked Bulbapedia, and You/Youshou, minus diacrititcs, is his Chinese name based off Yuuki, his Japanese one. (This is how people pieced together Viet Crystal's origin.)

A ROM hack of English Emerald, in the style of the legendary Vietnamese Crystal, a Chinese bootleg of Japanese Crystal that was translated into English by the bootleggers based on a Chinese translation. Viet Crystal was found as a bootleg cartridge in Vietnam, hence the name. A patch for Japanese Crystal exists so folks can play Viet Crystal, and Elf Coach has made patches for Japanese HGSS and Platinum to get the same feel as well.
