I think its an interesting point as well that the only way to originally catch a Wynaut, aside from the egg you receive in Lavaridge town was from the Mirage Island in the original Ruby and Sapphire. The fact that the island can randomly pop into existence could have something to do with the Unknown as well, but that's just speculative.

I propose that they only evolve from question mark unown. One, what comes after the phrase why not? A question mark. You could even say it's on the tail end of the phrase. Two, Most unown only care about the fabric of reality, so it would make sense, that out of them all,?s are the only ones that have any curiosity, wanting to know about what they are protecting, As careful observers, they don't want to interfere with what they are observing, it's reflected in their move set, only being able to actually do anything to you, after you do something to it.

In Gen 3, Wynaut could only be found in the wild on Mirage Island. I think an island that appears and disappears is Unknown level of weird. Maybe the colony of disguised Unknown on the island try to keep it hidden with their reality-bending powers.

Following Bomble Sivart's comment, I came up with this theory. Hope it makes as much sense to everyone as it does to me. Maybe the tail is the "!" Unown. Maybe the ? unowns are indeed the most curious, and the ones who most "think", who most ask questions about everything, but they don't want to go out, because while they are indeed curious, they just aren't that interested in actually finding out themselves. Exclamation marks are usually used to indicate excitement, and since you cant be excited about something you're not interested in, exclamation marks consequently indicates interest. Hence why the exclamation marks go out their way to find out more about what they are protecting. They aren't the most curious ones, but they sure as hell are the most interested ones. Look at it like this: ! Unown are field scientists, they go places to find out about things they don't know or don't understand, while the ? Unown are the lab scientists, they don't want to go out to the field, so they take what the ! Unown discovered out and about and analyze it. ! Discovers and ? Studies. That's why the wynaut and wobbuffet tail is just a line, the dot is inside them. That also would explain why they don't interfere with what they are observing. Curious people tend to take what they are curious about, messing with the thing until they satisfy their curiosity. Interested people listen and pay attention. "But if they are interested on it, aren't they curious about it?" No, and that's why ? Unown and ! Unown need one another to "function". ? Unown asks the questions, which makes ! Unown interested in the questions they asked and motivates them to go and find an answer. They them transmit the answer to the ? Unown, which satisfies their curiosity. Rinse and Repeat. Interest doesn't work without curiosity and vice-versa. It's the same thing on humans. If you are curious about something, something about biology for example, and one of your friends is really interested in biology, you ask them(the "?"). They then proceed to answer you with excitement, since that's something they really like and have a lot of interest on(the "!").

Man I wrote this when I was 13. Dang. What 13 year old me meant was that because Unown,Wynaut,and Wobuffet ARE hidden power, they have no need to KNOW hidden power (by tm). And these hidden powers are learned by few, except the power of having a hidden power. Because why keep your hidden power hidden if it's already hidden. And the punching bag is basically a sign that their power is not hidden anymore, hence why wynaut and wobuffet can't learn hidden power at all. For gameplay reasons, it was totally useless in gen 2 since you could just switch out in its face till it struggled to death. OR.. or, perhaps other pokemon sense that the wobbuffet is hiding something. Thus becoming so overwhelmingly curious to find out what that secret is, that the trainer can't divert their attention away from that tail. Kind of akin to a hunting dog that's pointed at a gamebird, it's surprisingly hard to bring their attention elsewhere.

Imagine an Unown evolution. One that's not easily achieved. First you need to catch one of every shape of Unown and put them in a single box (I believe the box sizes need to be larger to accommodate this). Then you catch a Wobuffet and level it up to a very high level (level 60-100) then put it in the box with the Unown. Finally you need to catch a Ditto and put it in the box as well. This would immediately trigger an evolution where all the Pokemon in the box combine into a single Pokemon. The entire spectrum of Unown, including the one that's fully figured out what it means to be a Pokemon, merge with the empty husk that is the Ditto and form an Unown cluster that's also a Pokemon. This new version of Unown would be a legendary and would only be formed this way in 1 game. It's also a brand new legendary having never existed in the world until this moment, so it comes out at level 1 (Maybe level 5 like a starter). Every consecutive game it would be a Pokemon that already exists and be a typical legendary level. This new Unown, or Unownplex, would have the entire power of the cosmics in Pokemon form. If shown to Arceus, then Arceus would express unease with a Pokemon that he didn't create having his power. In a later game the Unownplex could become a major story plot as the new evil team attempt to capture it in order to become world rulers or gods or something like that... maybe they want the Unownplex in order to cast down Arceus.

Lockstin, I have something that could fit into this theory. What if instead of EVERY Wynaut and Wobuffet being an unown, What if the Unown that choose to live in this world actually turn themselves into the wynaut, and I mean like they accidentally forget about being an unown and their existence is completely turned into that of a different pokemon? This would explain why Wynaut has an evolution, and is able to breed. And then any Wynaut hatched from an egg is a new life, instead of an unown. It's possible unown very well could be the origin or wynaut and wobuffet, but it doesn't mean they are the same thing.

Have you ever notice how only legendary pokemon are the type of pokemon that is never mentioned/seen in the games/anime to have hatched by someone from their egg. On their own/by a parent pokemon sure. But never a human parent. Keepin that in mind, remember how Unknown doesn't have an egg type, Wynott and Wobbuffet do but they are never seen hatched by a human. Hey! The Unknown are powerful pokemon in a large group, and are extremely shy solitary pokemon! So naturally they wouldn't want anyone to know how to find/get their eggs! Which naturally means they wouldn't want the information to get out if someone found out! They can summon legendary pokemon and supposedly turn humans into legendary pokemon! They can create to wildest things a child can think of! So just think for a second: *What Horrible Thing Would The Unknown Threaten To Do To The Pokemon Scientist/Researcher Who Originally Wrote About Them In The Pokedex If They Ever Revealed Their SECRETEST OF SECRETS!* Or at the very least, what would the pokemon scientist/researcher who originally wrote about them in the pokedex fear that the powerful pokemon would do to them if they spilled the complete undiluted secrets? Better to just put a vague unspecified info down in the pokedex and keep people guessing than to risk your own safty. Wynaut is a deflated wobbufet. It's true body is inside the decoy. Think of a rubber turtle. Except it's butt is its mouth. The skin is its shell. And it's eyes and brain are the tail. It can't see out its shell so it has to stick its head out. To put it simply, what fills a punching bag? Sand. But what's filling this sandbag is a pokemon. Mawile kinda shows a similar strategy. Except in reverse. Has a cute true body but a scary weapon. So it's a rubber turtle. Even its feat make sense for it.

Wobbuffet thinks of other Wobbuffet tails in minute 9 of episode 13 season 21, when Team Rocket list their dreams. Wobbuffet may or may not be unown, but it sure is the tail!

And what here comes more mindblowing stuff: In every single languague wynauts name is a phrase u use as a short answerusually when u wanna quit the conversation especially in france where hes called okeoke and wobbuffets name is also in another languague (german) woingenau what comes from the german phrase wohingenau? That means sth like : Where is it i gotta go? That implies they dont know where to go , and guess who also doesnt know where to go? Exactly: The unknown if they where to leave their caves and explore theworld .

I think the reason wobuffet has two eyes on the sock is that two unown just grouped together in one sock and "evolved"

I always thought that wobbufet was a decoy but I thought that the decoy was a misshapen ditto. Wobbufet's main way of attacking is by using mirror move and counter, these moves do the same amount of damage as the original attack did. Ditto changes into a (an almost perfect) copy of the original pokemon. Also, if you check, wobbufet is blue and ditto is pink. But, if you change them to shiny, wobbufet becomes pink, and ditto becomes blue.

I always noticed the tail on wobbuffett looking similar to unown and especially wynaut. With its tail having only one eye it makes it even harder to not recognize.

What if... Wobbuffet are more a symbiotic relationship with Unowns would explain why they can breed and all, but they have little to no brain activity, which allows for a puny Unown (who again, know they are weak on their own) manipulate the living stomach we all know. Wynauts could be named for their agreeability in this relationship. they don't mind the companionship that their tails give. Unown gives command, Wynaut says "sure, k buddy, why not?"

You could say that Wynauts are the true evolutionary descendants of unknown. Even if you question why there are still unknown and not extinct, well not all unknown wanted to evolve and remained their own species. Heck that would clear up the confusion of breeding too!

My head canon is that the tail is just more vulnerable as a part of the body. And what do psychic types tend to have? Third eyes, or things similar to it. My theory is that due to Wynaut’s already weak form it gained an eye on its tail to “watch its back” to sense danger. This would mean that the tail is also some sensory organ or can detect objects around the tail. This is only elaborated upon when Wynaut evolves into Wobbuffet where it is more durable now, but it can’t just forget about its tail. Now that Wobbuffet is larger and a bigger target, it is battle ready, thus the tail gaining another eye as a safety net to watch its back even further now as it takes the brunt of damage and needs to pay attention to its surroundings to not get ambushed. The tail also can’t inflate itself with air, only the body can. This means the tail is the most sensitive, and the coolest as it has eyes to be aware of predators seeking out its possible weak spot. The tail isn’t the Wobbuffet, the tail is the manifestation of Wobbuffet’s inability to attack and is forced to watch as an extra set of psychic eyes. The tail represents Wobbuffet’s inner fear. Wobbuffet’s inability to attack is reflected on the tail who watched with piercing eyes for danger. The tail is an extent of Wobbuffet itself and it’s fear and desires.
