The Blue Oyster Bar is considered a classic. Rumour has it that what happens in the bar wasn't scripted and the director had no idea what to do right up to the point where everyone was on set. The script just said that there were bikers in the club. It was the local motorcycle club who were hired as extras that came up with the idea when they were told that no one had any idea. They huddled together and decided amongst themselves what to do just before the take and did it without anyone else, not even the other two actors, knowing what they would do

I'd say the first 6 are all great, 5 changes the tone up a bit, and 6 dumbs the humor down to be a bit more slapstick, but they're still really good funny movies. The seventh one (where they went to Russia), and the made for TV reboot I seem to recall vaguely existing were where things really went off the rails.

After checking your movie history, you may be in the mood for a re-watch! Michael Winslow appeared as a radar operator in the movie Spaceballs (1987), in which he performs all the sound effects himself during one scene. This came out when I was in elementary school, and the humor seemed to be a pretty big hit with the kids I knew. I don't know if that says more about the maturity of the movie, or what 7-8 year-olds were like in the early 80s. Even as a fourth-grader, I can remember conversations getting pretty filthy, and the most shamelessly raunchy jokes I ever heard were the ones I heard from my peers in the single-digit age bracket. Police Academy was juuust risqué enough that, if your parents kept you sheltered, you probably weren't allowed to see it, but not dirty enough that your friends' parents would stop to wonder whether you were allowed to see it, when you watched it with their kids. Kids being kids, though, they still tended to talk more about Michael Winslow's sound effects than anything else. Then again, I can remember a classmate talking about movies like Porky's and I Spit on Your Grave, of all things, in first or second grade: Some kids got left alone with an unlocked Cable box... I guess there are a lot of younger people who have never heard the "J word" before. We had a local TV personality use it, some years back, without knowing what it actually meant. The shocked look on her black co-host's face said it all. Of course, they packed her off to "reeducation camp"/sensitivity training. I felt bad for her, since A: The experience was obviously utterly humiliating, and B: It's not like she needed a class to teach her not to be racist, what she needed was to never use a word on-air (or anywhere else), unless she was sure she knew the meaning, first. A little literacy is a dangerous thing. Oops. Here endeth the lesson.

He went into Movies, tv and even some TV adverts after retiring from the game in 1976. He was the first pick in the 1967 NFL draft. His college went on to retire his jersey number in 1988 I think. He was a beast on the field. He was so much quicker than anyone of his size was thought to be able to be. He played in two Super Bowls for the Baltimore Colts earning him a ring for helping the Colts win Super Bowl V {five} He had many college as well as professional Football accolades. Sadly after his passing he was diagnosed with CTE.

This came out when I was a child, around the time my family got our first VCR. Yes, that's right. I'm old enough to remember first getting technology that was probably already obsolete by the time you were born. We used to just record things right off the TV. Sometimes, one of the pay channels would have a free preview weekend or something to give you a taste to try and get you to subscribe, and people would just record all the movies they could before it ended. My uncle used to have a huge collection of movies like this, and depending on the quality in which you chose to record in, you could fit one to three, or maybe even four movies on one VHS. Early on after first getting a VCR, we borrowed a couple of tapes from a friend and never returned them. I think this tape had this movie and "War Games" on it, and at the time, it was one of the only tapes we had. Suffice it to say, I'm sure I was much too young to be watching this movie, but I watched it over and over again so many times!

Police Academy movies are more "sit and chuckle" rather than "laugh out loud". They are certainly more grounded than something like Austen Powers which is almost purely gag based, but adding actual drama was common for the time. Even in comedies.

I always liked the fact that the joke of Hightower's name matching the look. My fave character from the series is Zed, i love his "gas scene".

All Police Academy movies rock the house! --- 5 and 7 are a bit iffy, but hell, if you like the cast, it's just fun to see them again!

The insult Mary confused Mahoney for is probably jabroni. An insult which originated in professional wrestling.

Mary, Michael Winslow (the sound effects guy) actually did all those sound effects. He spent quite a bit of time on Australian TV (Hey Hey, It's Saturday!) and would perform with all the wonderful noises he could do. There's a lot of him on KZbin. I believe you're aware of that medium? 😁😁😁

There's surprisingly a lot of character growth/development in all seven Police Academy movies, but most people in a consensus would probably stop after the fourth movie.

Police Academy was one of the first big films that shows a lot of Toronto where I grew up. :) The Blue Oyster Bar is actually a place called The Silver Dollar. About 15 years ago I photographed the band the Tokyo Police Club there for some promos.

The theme music in Police Academy is an adaptation of the marching music in the multiple Academy Award winning film Patton. Patton won Oscars for Best Movie, Director, Original screenplay and Best Actor George C Scott. It's widely considered one of the best war movies ever made and sooo worth watching
