Last week the Trump administration announced that additional ATF officers were being sent to Chicago to help tackle the city’s gun violence problem. Those agents are making use of a new high-tech tool - a ballistic testing van linked to the ATF’s interstate database “Integration Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) - on loan to the city for the summer. According to Chicago Tribune, there have been 1924 shootings in Chicago this year. Meanwhile, Cincinnati police have been leading the way using the NIBIN tool - linking bullet casings found at multiple crime scenes to one gun, and one criminal. The tool could help keep shooters off the streets. Vice News looked at the challenges in implementing it.

It’s eye opening to see out of 400+ gun crimes 40 or 50 people are doing most of the damage. That’s why the public needs to step up a turn in these criminals in , because most of the time the neighbors know who the shooter is but won’t say.

You know that gun parts are replaceable, right? You can change the barrel, or firing pin, or whatever you want. The only thing that has to stay the same, is the receiver, because that's where the serial number is. And the receiver has, essentially, no contact with the round (bullet and casing). This seems like some propaganda to me.

Unlike fingerprints or DNA this is pretty easy to counter. Use a revolver (collect shells on reload), pick up shells when possible and switch guns or internal components when you can't. Shell casing analysis might work right now and continue to work for dumb criminals, but the smart crooks will outmaneuver this tech in no time.

I'd be shocked if this is seen as conclusive evidence in a court of law. Do the math of number of particular models of gun sold in a caliber, variances of firing pin strikes per model sampled in a large enough cross section to be considered conclusive, then compare with similarities of other models in the same caliber. A cheap attorney could tear a case built on that to shreds, If you can find one that isn't playing politics with the cops. This is an excuse to up police hours and tax payers funds to their departments. Spend that money on education and see a greater ROI.

this reminds me of how they thought tooth impressions were a reliable source of forensic evidence.... oh and that was right behind hair and dna testing... noticing a trend where we will claim the forensic sciences are up to par in order to achieve convictions. when in reality they are a last ditch effort to prove beyond a "reasonable doubt" what might have otherwise needed much more evidence.. i know it works sometimes. my point is not the statistical success, but the failures which then cost an innocent someone, their life.

Hold on... Tool marks are NOT as unique as finger prints! That is a ridiculously stupid statement to make. Hell, finger prints aren't as unique as we once thought. There is NOTHING that unique about mass produced parts. Some MAY have microscopic differences, but some don't. Some are so nearly identical, that tool marks will look identical. This is going to lead to a lot of false arrest and possibly get tool mark identification thrown out of the "forensic sciences"!

Donna: I am a forensic psychologist and I rebuild/repair guns, reload my own ammo etc. This isn't my area professionally but I do know a fair amount about both the technology & the gun aspect. When a gun fires, the round is loaded into the chamber. When the trigger is pulled the firing pin hits the primer. The primer is the little button looking thing on the back of the casing. The firing pin dents the primer setting it off. That primer is what lights the gunpowder in the case. The powder burns, pushes the bullet out of the barrel. After the bullet fires, the slide comes back. While the slide is coming back, there is a part called the extractor. The extractor grabs the case & pulls it out of the chamber. The case then hits the ejector which bounces the case out of the gun. All those parts leave a distinct mark on the case. They can tell the model of the gun based on where the extractor mark is in relation to the ejector, how wide etc. If they look closer, every part is made slightly different just with small variations in the manufacturing process. In short, the extractor from one Glock will leave a slightly different mark on the case than another Glock. Same with the ejector & firing pin. They all leave unique marks on a case that they can read. If they have the suspect's gun, they can tell if a case found at a crime scene came from that gun. They can also tell if cases found at other scenes came out of that gun. The limitations of this technology: If they have a case but no gun, they can't identify which individual gun. That would be like having a finger print but not knowing who left that print. When you find the person with that print, you can tie them to the crime. Another limitation is you can swap out those parts. If you install a new firing pin, new ejector & new extractor, that gun will then leave different marks on the case. If you are a gunsmith, or if you are experienced, it's fairly easy to swap those parts out. In my experience, cases I have seen, been involved with etc, I have never seen a criminal do that. It's easy for people that have some very basic specialized tools & some basic knowledge of taking those parts off & installing new parts but most criminals can't do that. Hope that helps. If you have other questions, feel free to ask. If I know, or can get the answer for you, I would be happy to do so. Good Day!! Ms. Shannon.

Really? There are states that don't even make you register your firearm. They do a background check and then that's it. You get a gun and the government is none the wiser. And if you want to make a gun all you need is a barrel and something to strike the primer. Worst case your looking for a lead pipe and a sledgehammer. Does no one even remember what happened when the government banned acholic beverages? It's not the guns that pisses me of, it's the people. A gun is nothing more than a tool just like forks, knifes, and hammers. You going to ban all tools?

Casings are for sausage. A case is the part of the cartridge you're attempting to refer to.

So hitmen need to change out their barrel, firing pin, and extractor. Replacing or polishing the bolt face will need to be done too. Revolvers don't leave shells at the scene unless you reload. You'll still need to do a barrel swap. Glock is probably the easiest. Swapping out a "fitted" slide and barrel for another fitted slide and barrel can be done in about 60 seconds. Oxy torch will get rid of the spare parts. You'll still have to swap or polish the ejector on the Glock though.

No, it's not micro stamping. So it's not linked to a serial number. They could identify that a specific gun was used at multiple crime scenes, but can't link it to anyone unless they actually get ahold of the gun.

All this tells us is what pin hit what casing(s). Looks like it can be used to identify patterns of use, but not the users. Someone could buy a hot piece and get stuck with 20 charges/pieces of evidence against their character!

Not if you use a revolver and don't reload. You can also swap out the firing pin, extractor, and polish the breach face. Does require some basic gunsmithing knowledge.

This is not true, I am a gunsmith and a firing pin does not leaves a unique mark. They are all the same, they just penetrate the primer to ignite the bullet. Again, it does not leaves a unique mark, what leaves a mark is the barrel and it can only tells the kind of gun that fired the bullet.

Guys LET'S PROMOTE FISTS AGAIN, as opposed to guns, knives, acid or atomic bombs. I don't mean promote conflict. And of course often conflicts can be settled in a civilised way. But so many other times it's just tribal, basic, self-affirming into something powerful and real. In those cases we should accept the nobility of honour fists.

Micro-stamping and forensics like this will never work; -A stamp will wear down/change fast. Brass markings are subjective and broad. -Rifling changes over time. -Bullets often mangled on impact. -Firing pins and barrels can be swapped on most firearms easily. -You can collect brass, use a revolver, or a brass catcher. -You can drop random brass at the scene. -You have to have a sample from the suspected piece to compare the crime scene brass to. Forcing regular gun owners to register and stamp would be a burden on innocent people.

so there you go criminals. you now know how they can track you. i'm sure you have figured out the simple fix for this, right? walk into your local gun range and grab handfuls of similarly calibered brass. also, this does count as a gun registry they are just being coy about it.

Awesome video and awesome journalism guys. This is a pretty neat system that federal law enforcement has been using & operating. Hopefully this saves lives, and I hope local and state law enforcement agencies will have ready access to this system without having to go to a single source that ends up gate keeping the program. Which would only serve to make this technology and tactic as bad as DNA once was when it was developed. (and in some cases still is)

Not only can you change your firing pin, but you could just use a revolver since revolvers don't eject a shell casing. OR just pick the casings up LOL. Interesting idea though.
