Right now calling cops to deal with a mental health crisis or issue, is a death sentence.

Last month I went through the CIT training for my department. It was one of the best trainings I've had in law enforcement. Thanks for the great conversation introducing the concept. The majority of the community (as seen in comment sections) have no clue how law enforcement and police work functions, so shows like this can help educate them.

That's awesome. I agree, there is a lot that the general public does not know about policing. Ernie's insight and willingness to share is a huge benefit to the growth of law enforcement. As Ernie said, we need to police smarter. Thanks for the comment! Glad you are enjoying the podcast.

I’ve seen far too many people with mental health issues, developmental issues, and people with medical problems like diabetes being killed, beat, and abused. How many diabetics needed medical attention but were beat and arrested for DUI. I saw cops drag a wheelchair bound man across the road tell him to stand up and stop resisting, another case a deaf black woman was taken down hard because she wouldn’t stop when the cop yelled for her to stop. He said she was “resisting”, then he cuffs her then started asking her questions but she could not use sign language that her daughter could have interpreted

I'm amazed at my ignorance of the lack of training that police receive regarding this {and other} issues. We seems we need some national standards on police training on ALL relevant issues. Training with specific requirements for testing actual performance levels required of individual academy graduates and and ongoing regular retesting as long as an officer remains on the force. NATIONAL STANDARDS NOW !

I'm a former health care worker and a Navy veteran. I worked in health care for 18 years and during that time i interacted with patients who had mental illness. Some had other problems that affected the brain. I know early in my career it was extremely uncomfortable and a little off putting. It took time and continued training to develop people skills and seeing the whole person through the illness. The bigger picture often gets lost in details. I learnd how to take vital signs, bandage wounds, how to do CPR and other basic patient care. I guess until i had my own burn out that led to a break down did I fully understand what mental health was about. I had training. I couldn't see it in myself. I think one key skill is listening. Many times a person in crisis wants to be heard. They want to be treated with dignity and respect. A cry for help is more than attention seeking. Imagine having a fear or sence of being unwell. Imagine not knowing how to express your feelings. It gets even more frustrating when others don't take you seriously. You just need a hobby. You just need to pray. Go to school, youll feel better Once these feelings reach a certain point you want attention. Inside you are screaming for help, but nobody responds. Sooner otmr later that will lead to a crisis situation. I'm glad that there are police departments training officers how to intervene. More departments need to get involved. I hear terrible stories and become more afraid of seeking help from 911. I am reluctant to call unless death is imminent or other serious emergency. I sometimes think units might do well to have specially trained peer support. To have individuals who have recovered or has been in recovery over a period of time to help. Testimony and input of personal experience can be beneficial. Sometimes a peer can reach someone else who is going through something because they have been through it themselves before.

If you have a family member in crisis don’t call 911 as cops will show up and kill them.
