Went to change bushings out on my 09Tacoma access cab (I believe = to 4th gen 4 runner) boot was half full of fluid, leak hadn't shown itself yet. Ended up replacing the whole rack.(for any who know yes, I cut the bolt, it is now installed top down ) Biggest PITA job I've done on a vehicle. New rack came with neoprene bushings, drives like a dream. You do great videos, direct and easy to watch. Whats next?

You should have sprayed the metal sleeves and bolts with white lithium grease, they would have slid in easier. White lithium doesn’t hurt the poly bushings, plus it keeps them from squeaking. The only reason I know is because we did it on some military equipment and some race cars

I don't know why toyota used gummy bear material for these bushings... pretty common issue, I have done a few of these. If unattended it will ruin the outer seals, then you may as well replace the rack. The poly bushings are worth it! Even on a new rack too!

Maybe you didn’t show it but white lithium grease should always be used with polyurethane. Polyurethane and metal will always speak once they seat in.
@freshcharge
@freshcharge 3 жыл бұрын
The bushings on this unit are not intended to move, more to insulate from vibration and shock. Lithium grease should not be used since it will cause premature slippage and bushing deterioration due to petroleum contamination.

HEY Austin! Great video! I'm an old school mechanic and it was common knowledge that oil and rubber DO NOT MIX! U should have known that basic law. U must be self taught! I am a veteran of the US Navy! Went to the best schools in the military and got a tremendous amount of info to help in my career! 20 yers as a boat engineer. 20 yrs in construction.! U need to know basic laws of physics and chemistry to be a successful mechanic! Math and janitorial skills as well. Dont ever say u dont know. It does not leave a good impression. Just a Lil FYI!

@@austinniemela neoprene is too hard and brittle. It turns into plastic bits then just starts breaking apart. I just changed out some energy bushings on the same rack yesterday. The big ring was gone down to a 1/4 chunk remaining. The downward bushing was half left. The large bolt bushing on the left had deteriorated to nothing on the inner bushing. It's mostly a gimmick and I have replaced more of that material bushing than I can count.
