I'm definately trying this. That's triple the size of one I occasionally buy at the Polish deli for a ridiculous price. My Aunt in Poland made this 25 yrs ago. She made several and I ate an entire one myself because it's my favourite delicacy.

I too must confess that I have eaten a whole one; but it's been many years as no one carries this in my town and I am not about to pay $25 for one to be shipped (yes, I'm cheap, but I'm Polish).

A canceled Czech. Argh ! My sweetie loves that kind of word joke. An indicator of an intelligence that probably reads a lot and has high end verbal skills. You often look at the camera in a way that makes me feel like I am missing a joke. My wife has a version of that. Great for making a class a bit anxious. It improves their listening skills, temporarily. 😁

I'm a guy well over 50 ... :-) from a child's eye perspective ... This was the poppy seed roll that made my aunt May the most awesome cook in the world. All other cooks are in the shadow of her greatness! We would beg our mom to take us over to her house often for this treat and also her poppy seed pies and kolaches. She had many flavors for many types of pies and pastries. The poppy seed roll was my favorite. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful childhood memories!

Hi JENNY, so nice to see you make this old favorite of mine. My late mother used to make this a lot, but she always used the wet poppyseed filling that comes in a jar in the grocery store. It's in the grocery store in the pie filling section. She also used it to make " Homentashen" for the Jewish Holiday of Purim. I have also bought this in the Russian grocery store. I love it so much. They roll the dough very thin so the end result has many, many layers. It also used to make me sleepy after I ate it. LOL

+ morokiya55 - I've had my manual grinder for 20 years and never see them at the stores. You would have to look for one online. Look for one that clamps onto the table and not the suction style (Miracle Jihokov) which does not work.

+Jenny Can Cook realy nice. We have a similar dessert here in Slovenia. Pretty much everything is the same, just replace poppy seads with grinded walnuts. Its called "Orehova potica". Since you seem to enjoy this dessert, I would also recommend you to try to make "Prekmurska gibanica", here is the recipe: www.slovenia.info/es/recepti/Prekmurska-gibanica.htm?recepti=8822&lng=2 This is also a very famous dessert, especialy in region of Prekmurje, where I come from. Also chech out "Blejski kremšniti", you gonna love it. Greetings from Slovenia:)

Here's the Czech song Jenniver was singing: Było morze w morzu kołek A na kołku był wierzchołek. A po roku coś przybyło I to także łyse było sialala Using an online translator, which may not be accurate, this is the song in English: And there was a tip on the peg. At the top sat a hare And with my legs dressing he sang like this: My legs smell wonderful Morning, evening and noon And the most smell of summer They smell of spring, smell sialala in summer When you sniff one leg You'll fall to the floor. When you sniff both legs You won't get up from this floor for a hundred years Bald father bald mother bald neighbor and neighbor And I was also bald I married a bald sialala The bald priest blessed us The bald organist played. And after a year something came And it was also bald was sialala

my German Oma made this every Christmas, poppyseed and walnut. I made 2 of each today, I like to send as gifts, and this is closest to my Oma's bread ever. I do use jarred poppyseed filling but add some walnuts, chopped dried apple, 2 tbsp orange marmalade and golden raisins. The walnut filling the same ingredients but 2 egg whites beaten to stiff peaks and folded in, just what Oma did. I think they hold the walnuts filling together. Thanks Jenny!

Ingredients: Dough: 1 1/2 cups bread (or all purpose) flour 1 packet (2 tsp/7 gms/1/4 oz) yeast - instant or active dry yeast 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup milk (I use 1% or 2% low fat milk) heated to 120-130° F for instant yeast (or 110-120°F for active dry) 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil 1 egg about 3/4 cup extra flour Filling: 1 cup poppy seeds 1/3 cup boiling water 1/4 cup ground toasted almonds (20 count) 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla zest of 1/2 a lemon & 1/2 an orange Instructions: Grind poppy seeds (see note below). Place in a small bowl, stir in boiling water & let stand uncovered. Grind almonds and set aside. Place flour, yeast, sugar, & salt in large mixing bowl. Stir in milk followed by oil & egg. Beat on high for 2 minutes. Stir in extra flour until dough forms a mass. Place dough on floured board and knead 100 turns (about 2 minutes). Cover & let rest 10 minutes. Meantime, add ground almonds, sugar, vanilla & zests to poppy seeds. Roll dough into a 10 x 12 shape. Spread filling almost to edges, roll starting at 10-inch end and place on parchment-lined baking sheet, seam side down. Pinch and tuck ends under. Cover with a towel and rise in a warm spot for 1 1/2 hours or until double in size. Preheat oven to 350° F and bake for 35 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes & drizzle with glaze (1 cup powdered sugar + about 2 Tbsp. milk, added slowly) (Another option): Before baking, you can brush with eggwash and sprinkle with poppy seeds.

This is very similar to a babovka that my mom made. She was from a Czech background and they made it in a tube pan. I never knew though how you prepared the poppyseed! I know they sell the filling in cans but it's not the same so will try this recipe. You have some great recipes. I wonder if you've ever made a lamb Easter cake and if so how you prepared it!

Jenny, thank you for sharing your recipe. I have a Slavic friend who is in her 80's who has been craving this bread, her mother used to make it. So I thought I would search for a recipe. I found your video...and I thought, this woman looks so familiar! And then I realized it was you. You look wonderful, Jenny!! Thanks again for sharing!

I fell in love with this bread after finding it at a store in my town that sells Russian and Ukrainian food, but it's probably even better fresh and home made.

My great-grandmother used to make poppyseed roll, similar to yours. I do not remember the icing though. She and her husband immigrated in the early 1900's from Austria. They lived in eastern Austria near the border of Hungary. I've never tried to make this before. You've inspired me! Thank you for sharing...
