I’ve had both of my knees and my hips replaced over about 16 years. Life is so much better after replacement. You will regret only not doing it sooner. Cartilage won’t grow back so get them replaced. Healing is easier now than when you get older. Don’t be afraid. Replacements are gifts.

I’ve had a knee replacement and it has been the best decision I’ve made. I was in denial, …it only hurts when or I just need to exercise more. I was very afraid of the pain and the recovery. I won’t lie, it’s difficult and painful. However, the pain goes away. I’m walking with no pain and dancing with no difficulties. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you get relief. You have certainly been busy since coming home. I bet it felt good to be in your own bed. I’m relatively new to your channel so I’m still trying to catch up. Welcome home! Donna

I never really thought about facing several of these things you’ll encountered once returning home, so thanks for sharing. I know several people that has had knee problems, bone on bone, and the injection is the first attempt to getting knee back on track, after pain meds. But most end of having successful knee replacement without regrets. Both knees usually, so I pray you have a successful surgery and recovery, with no regrets 😇

I tried everything with injections. I decided to lose weight, do all the exercises that would be necessary post op as pre op, and we were exersising more, but ultimately I went with knee replacement. I was injected with a pain reliever when the replacement was done. I was playing golf again in 3 weeks and 6 days. Losing weight beforehand was really the key; however, doing the exercises before was also very helpful. I am so thankful to not go through further shots. Good luck.

Oh my goodness! There was a lot to take care of when you returned! I enjoyed your travel videos! Nancy, I was supposed to have knee replacement this fall due to my kneecap being bone on bone. However, since late last winter, I have been exercising faithfully using the exercises my Physical Therapist taught me in 2023. Also, one exercise I saw on the Internet helps with climbing stairs- you can do this exercise with just one stair- step sideways up and down. I do this 10 times on each leg. I also ice my knee three times per day. I have been able to push off my surgery for awhile. I wish you well!

Nancy I had an ankle replacement 2 years bc I had a traumatic injury in my twenties and had severe osteoarthritis, which had grown progressively worse over the years. That replacement was the best decision I made!! Of course, you have to do what works for you, but osteoarthritis is no joke, for sure! Before surgery, I was able to manage with ibuprofen. Post surgery, I can run again and walk distances that I had not been able to do. I hope you find a resolution soon!!! Best wishes!!

Master Gardener here. Preen for those weeds as long as it isn't near a vegetable garden. You belong to Costco and they sell it in the spring. I buy enough boxes for 2x a year. I have 1/3 with lots of perennial beds. Once in March or after the snow and once in the summer. Especially if you are going to be gone for awhile. Really helps cut down on weeds.

First - your family is beautiful! Second - I’m in line for knee replacement myself. During our last cruise (Mar ‘24) on day 11 of a 15 day, I decided to do laundry. The laundromat on the deck below was closer then walking to the front of the ship. And even though I have had some knee, hip, and nerve issues, I decided that it would be a good idea to use the stairs instead of the elevator. That night and for the remainder of the cruise I had to deal with some tough knee pain especially at night. Finally made it to my doctor and that’s where I was informed that I am 100% bone on bone and would need a total knee replacement and soon rather then later. I have received some cortisone shots which is helping until surgery. The cortisone shot has also helped with my hip and thigh pain.

Not sure if this helps, but I have read where avoiding inflammatory foods will help with pain issues (knees, joints). For me, gluten is inflammatory so I delved in and became gluten free and only eat whole “real” foods….no processed foods whatsoever. Nothing gets past my lips that is just “real”food…..no sugar, no gluten, no processed food, etc. that has helped me tremendously. I am amazed how pain free my whole body feels and I have been in pain EVERY day for YEARS. Good luck with your healing and I’m sure surgery will be fine if that is needed….I plan to avoid that as long as possible. I mean, what did people do 100 years ago? They didn’t have knee replacements so I feel the foods we eat today contribute to many of our health issues! Take care and thank you both for ALL your videos!❤
@livingphase2Ай бұрын
This is Nancy here and I agree with you 100% on food. I really do try to eat healthy. Food on the cruise was challenging. Wine every day for the most part and we hardly ever drink at home normally. I really tried to cut out sugar. But should probably try to cut out gluten as well.
@JackieSathreАй бұрын
Nancy - I empathize with you in regards to knee pain. I suffered for several years putting off replacement and finally I had my 1st knee replacement and could not believe the surgery was less painful than what I experienced prior to having that done. The shots weren't working for me. My suggestion is to really consider having surgery sooner than later and I don't think you will regret it. Love you channel and watch every episode!!! Jackie Sathre

Thanks for introducing us to your beautiful family. Seeing them and spending time with them must have been such a wonderful experience for you both! Even though you had so many tasks to do upon your return it seems that you were well prepared and tackled everything successfully. Kudos to you both for joining Weight Watchers to get the extra weight off! To me it looked as if you were losing weight as time went on instead of the other way around; you did a tremendous amount of walking to counterbalance the tempting food experiences. Congratulations on the brand new vehicles….what nice welcome home “gifts!” I am so glad to hear that there will be more adventures coming up with Egypt and travels in your RV! Nancy, I am so sorry to hear about diagnosis about your knees. Both of my knees are severely bone on bone arthritis and stairs are rough to handle. Some days are better than others but you always know the discomfort is there. I have been avoiding the replacements ( I don’t know why!) but many of my friends and family members have had theirs done and are so glad they did. I am sure you have been advised that you have to figure in at least three months of recovery time with lots of physical therapy but I am sure it’s all worthwhile in the end! Good luck to you both as you continue to get back to being “home sweet home.” Enjoy those beautiful grandchildren and keep posting your wonderful videos.🍁

your videos are wonderful and informative. Never thought about all those things you may come home too. You're much calmer than I would've been. Maybe you weren't lol. Nancy asked for your knees. I had my knee and hip replaced and all I can say is my quality of life changed back to 110%. I tried to compensate all the time that oh it's not that bad, etc. but with the new technology and how they do the surgeries it's so much faster recovery. My husband and I travel and hike and I wouldn't be doing any of that without my hip and knee that I had done six and eight years ago. I understand your frustration. It's very hard when you're active and things change and slow us down. Keep us posted. Thank you both again.

I had one day replaced at 73. The one thing I did was I found some videos that had a physical therapist recommending exercises to do for several weeks before surgery. Really simple things nothing hard or difficult. But someone else had recommended them so I kept with the program. I left the hospital with more than 90° bend and within two weeks I was walking a mile. So good luck most people I’ve talked to her are way happier than before the replacement. It does take a little longer though to get through TSA. I’m glad because I enjoy traveling with you. If you are ever in the Fort Worth area again, I feel I owe you a dinner for all the enjoyment you gave me so if you don’t have anyone to go out to dinner with, I would be glad to treat you. Stay safe.

This is Nancy here and thanks for sharing this information. I’m so glad things went well for you. It’s frustrating for me because walking I’m OK, but it’s stairs and sitting and standing when I put that pressure on my knees that it gives me a fit. I do try to keep moving though.

I’ve have been having major hip and knee problems and the recommendation that has changed my life is walking in water against a current. Check your ymca or local city indoor pools or rec centers to see if they have a lazy River. I live near Fort Worth and we have at least 2 loc rec centers and one ymca that have a lazy River near me.I walk 15 min against the current, then 15 with the current, and then repeat it. I walk 1 hour total and it has changed my life. I could barely put pressure on my knees and had trouble sitting and standing also. I worked up to the hour starting with 20 min and slowly adding time. I now am pain free and walk at least 1 time a week for maintenance to keep it pain free. The physical therapist told me it’s above and below the knees that need strengthening and for me it was my hips and ankles and the water walking against current really helps the hips. Do not be surprised to be sore the first several times doing this.
@livingphase2Ай бұрын
Oh wow. Thank you so much for sharing this. We actually have a YMCA that is getting ready to open later this fall that is pretty near to our house. It will have an indoor pool, but I don’t think it will have a lazy river. But thank you so much for the tips. I truly appreciate them.

I have severe arthritis in both hips and I recommend taking turmeric . Not all turmeric is created equal so do some research and get recommendations. I’ve been taking it for quite a while and it allows me to keep going without having surgery. I also use swimming laps as my form of exercise and wouldn’t still be moving without it. The final thing I really recommend is taking a close look at your diet. Some foods (mostly carbs) have a direct impact on how much pain I’m feeling. I’m a mature woman (79) and prefer to deal with my issues without surgery. Hope you are able to find what works best for you. Have truly enjoyed living vicariously through your videos. Most enjoyable. Thanks.

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear that you were having knee problems. My 63-year-old sister had her knee replaced a couple years ago and she’s doing great. She went on a Mediterranean cruise last year and was able to climb all the steps, especially when she went to Greece. I’ve seen videos about people having medical surgeries in Thailand, just because it seems much cheaper there than the US. Good to see you settling back in, Mike and Nancy! I'm sure you'll be back in the swing of your business and enjoying your new vehicles soon. I wanted to say Steve had both knees replaced (one in January of 2023 and the other in April, so over 7 months before the world cruise) and if you decide to go that route, he thinks a key to the best possible outcome is doing the PT religiously. Also, I believe generally, they want you to not have had a steroid shot for three to six months before you get the surgery, so that is something to factor into your planning if you think you might get the steroid shot before going to Egypt. And we didn't gain any weight on the cruise, but I did gain 10 pounds after getting home! LOL! I think it was the stress of taking care of our 3-year-old grandson and concern over the complicated twin pregnancy our daughter-in-law was having. But now, everyone is fine, so I hope to lose my extra pounds, too!
@livingphase2Ай бұрын
Oh, I’m so glad to hear that. Everyone is fine now. We missed you on the cruise. Are you considering the reunion cruise? I’m not ready for a replacement yet. I just don’t feel like I’m to that level. But I’ve got to do some thing so I can handle stairs. Plus handle the sitting and standing.
@dorothymartin6299Ай бұрын
@@livingphase2 I'm going on a Viking cruise in Alaska in June, so won't make the reunion cruise. And it is a big decision on the knees -- Steve had the steroid shots for a while before everyone thought that surgery was needed. I think that the steroid shot might be a good option for you for your planned Egypt trip. Steve and I also have Egypt planned, but not till next December. I have avoided having a 2nd knee replacement by taking turmeric 1500mg (be sure it has biopiprine/black pepper). I use quonal as the brand. It takes a month to help relieve pain.

I have been taking turmeric since I got home. I’ll check to see if it has the other ingredient she mentioned. I’m not so sure that it does. I also started taking collagen.

I wonder if the hip is related to slight gait changes because of the knees. This happened to my friend and the hip stopped hurting after her knee replacement. Either way I hope you find something soon to help you. But wow! What an intense reentry from the cruise. I’m so impressed with how expeditiously yall are handling all the challenges. And bravo for the weight loss. Seeing your family was a highlight of the video. ❤

You know, I had wondered thattoo. But I’ve had an x-ray. We will update more on a KZbin short in the near future when I have all the results.😬

I've had total knee replacements in both knees left in 2009 and right in 2012 and and they're wonderful -- pain was very little with the least needed analgesic and I was walking without a cane within 3 days and have had no problems ever since --no pain or stiffness----no walkers or assistance of any kind and both work so well I forget I've even had surgery --I highly recommend the operational route and am sure you'll be pleased with the result--just opt for a skilled surgeon who's had previous success with the procedure and you'll be so relieved to be rid of your pain

Great video. We traveled for just 5 weeks and were amazed at the "settling back in" time. I'm curious, when you unpacked, did you find things that you would choose to NOT take again if you were to do another long voyage?
@livingphase2Ай бұрын
Really very little. There were things that we left for the crew or donated that we just didn’t need but for the most part, I felt like we had packed very well.

Hip pain could be from muscle in balance. Get to a physical therapist. (if insurance covers, or hire a personal trainer) If the injections help or not, you need to build certain muscles. And if you end up needing the knee replacement, those exercises will help you get through the surgery much easier. Hey, the injections may help prolong having a surgery. Some go years with help from the injections. But do not wait too long. Wow. You both hit the ground running.

There are new owners at Heim. Heard it is not as good now. We always go to Cousin's BBQ. I love their BBQ Meat Potato. Just a few small shops on the south end of Ft. Worth and even at the airport.

Next time we go down to Texas, we’ll have to try cousins barbecue. Interesting that Heim has new owners. Did not know that.

Knee problems. Such a huge pain, literally. I am having the same problem. I’ve been battling bone on bone for a year. I have had the cortisone injections - helps for a week or so, then I am back to pain. I did have a visco shot and it help for a little while. I am having another one in a couple of weeks. Ask your doc for either meloxicam or celebrex. It’s a prescription grade ibuprofen. Also try voltaren cream. It is over the counter. Your back / hip maybe be hurting because of the way you are walking. I do NOT want a knee replacement (I am scared of the pain) but I do NOT want to keep living with this pain. And I want to live my life enjoyably. I am prepared to after the 1st of the year - like Jan 2 (!!!) to have it replaced. I need to drive to WI for a g’daughter’s high school graduation in May. Girl I totally understand the pain. Everything you said is what I am feeling. I hope you can get some resolution soon - pain colors your life, and it’s not pretty.

I'm hesitant on the Voltaren cream , the cardio side effects scare me.

@@loisunderhill7555 then you need to only use it with a doctors approval. I totally understand.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m scared to death of having a knee replacement or two of them. The thing is is it doesn’t hurt to walk. It’s just stairs or getting in and out of a seated position.😬

Sure can, you can attach your phone with a USB to HDMI cable or a computer HDMI to HDMI. Then fire up your VPN so that it looks like you're back in the US and not on the ship and then stream from your favorite streaming site

Synvisc injections. None of that helped me and I ended up having to have both knees replaced first one was at 55. The second one was a few years later. Best thing I ever did, but boy that is a tough surgery. I’ve had many mini surgeries in my life, including lower back surgery for ruptured discs, and the knee replacement was other than worse, but it does heal and you feel much better once you’re done.
@livingphase2Ай бұрын
I don’t feel like I’m ready for the surgery yet and yes, I’m very scared of having it done as I feel it’s most likely in my future.
