you can't use gravity to your advantage when you're opponent is taller than you or even your same height, it works oppositely, but yes gravity can do a lot of damage in certain situations but those situations don't happen often. Very refreshing to see fight info videos with a balanced approach, filled with practical advice. Shane is very professional and I don't think there's a single video from this channel that casts doubt over his skill and knowledge. Of course, these tips should be paired with regular training... but if you're someone who doesn't train and you find yourself in a fight, perhaps something from a FightTips video pops into your head and saves your life. That'd be a great video for the channel: a true story of someone using Shane's tips in a fight!

One thing I think is important to think about if in a "real" fight, where you don't have gloves, and to a certain degree in MMA with grappling gloves: Not tensing the fist until last moment is of course sound advice, _but_ if the opponent moves into your punch when without gloves you can seriously hurt your hands if you have waited to tense your fists. It's easy to underestimate just how hard a human head is and how badly you can hurt your hands by hitting it with a sloppy fist. Actually, in a street fight it may even be prudent to not strike with your fist at all, using an open hand instead. Being ex military we trained strictly to never strike with our fists in hand to hand fights since you really can't afford broken fingers or hand bones which will make you a crappy shot. This is a special situation of course since the opponent you may end up in a hand to hand fight with may well be wearing a helmet, body armor, lot's of equipment etc which makes the risk of hurting your hands even greater, and you will really never score a knockout in a situation like that anyways.

Jesus walked on water, and turned water into wine. Be like Jesus and drink from his Word, and you will never thirst again. Now, back to what creates the power of a strike - any strike, hand, knee, elbow, head butt, foot. It's a combination of being relaxed before the moment of impact and being tense, only at the moment of impact, as when, for example, chopping wood with a heavy axe, or hatchet, or as when someone cracks a whip, loosely holding the handle of the whip, until the moment it has neared its intended point, then grasping tightly at impact. Along the way, in the example of the whip, the whip is propelled most quickly and powerfully by offloading the weight of the body, say, for a reverse, sidearm whip, much like someone throwing a frisbee does, when they are attempting to throw one a very long distance - as when one throws a reverse ridgehand strike to someone's kidneys, rotating their hips into the strike, and also, transfering the weight from one foot to the other, and offloading it at impact - POP! Visit my site for more on such principles and concepts, though, this is just the tip of the iceberg. And keep in mind, never did I say anything about such nonsense as Chi power or aligning Chakras or other BS. No. It's physics as applied to the human body, along with an understanding of how we are wired, neuromuscularly, in exercise science called Kinesiology - the study of movement!

Good advice. All that excess tension does is make it harder to adapt your movement and increase the chance that you telegraph the technique, while wasting energy. Your arm weighs as much or more than a baseball bat, so it's capable of serious damage without the extra muscle effort or even without the body in it.
@urosmilasinovicspd21256 жыл бұрын
One thing is, GGG uses the hole kinetic chain to get the power via fascia up to through his chest and then he throws a punch. IT looks stiff but it his muscles contract in the proper sequence(pushing through the forefoot with the glutes, rotating with the contraction of glutes,while rotating pulling the arm slightly back and once the rotation of the body is done then throw the punch(I simplified the explanation, so its not the most accurate)). Power is important, but I understand what you wanted to say. As Connor said , timming beats speed and accuracy beats power.

Speed is twice as important as "power." Kinetic energy is squared with velocity (speed + direction) and then multiplied by 1/2 then by weight. 1/2massxspeedsquared. That is why high speed crashes do so much more damage. Twice as fast punch = 4x harder hit. 3x faster punch = 9x harder hit.

There is a very important thing which is critical if you want to deliber a good punch and that's DISTANCE. You want to extend your arms to generate maximum power. It's amazing that the time came out to almost exactly half of the first punches. It's because when you tense all of your muscles, half of your muslces (flexors) are actually working AGAINST you. If your tricep is extending your arm, your bicep is actually trying to pull it back in. Tensing your muscles doesn't somehow give your arm more mass, it just makes you half as efficient.

very interesting and important topic... also, always going for a head shot and a knock out, is a very ridged way of looking at self defense.... take someones fists out, strike arms, limbs in general, takes your opponents mind to where you want it, makes them hesitant in using their weapons, you cause serious pain in the lead limb... that will likely cause then to change stance and even pull their guard in tighter, it gives them something else to think about : ) well said, a huge amount can be done in 2 seconds.... as you have said, the big haymaker etc is a bit like a birthday present to an experience fighter/martial artist.

You gotta let people know that, when shadow boxing, you don't wanna aim for speed. It's used for focusing on technique, not so much about how fast you can throw a combo. Slow, methodical strikes, thoroughly moving throw a kicks motions, making sure that accuracy/balance/stance are all being used appropriately. Grant it you do have years and years of experience so, I'm not doubting you in anyway(fans please don't kill me in comments for this). But, for amateurs and whatnot, the focus is to practice your technique through shadowboxing. Maybe do a short video on the effectiveness of shadowboxing and how it can be applied? Dunno if you have awready... Just thought I'd mention that as my Muay Thai instructor has taught me to shadowbox with calm, methodical movements.

For those who do not understand the sweet science of boxing: the fast punches he throws generate a lot of power because he is using his body weight and feet as leverage. Therefore, every time he is throwing his right cross, his body weight is behind it! And obviously if u know common physics, mass x speed = impact . That is why they train their foot work, shoulders, and core. The power comes from those three, not your bicep and forearm muscles. If you tense up like that, you telegraph the punch so easily to the opponent. how can you hit someone if they see the punch coming a mile away?

@erinmurphy699310 жыл бұрын
Normally, Shane seems to use an MMA stance that is a little wider and a little more weighted to the rear to protect against takedowns. If you watch Muay Thai fighters they tend to be much more upright so they can use their shins and elbows to block more effectively. In a self defense scenario the typical MMA stance is perhaps too open up top because MMA fighters rely on submissions for wins and you need your hands out to sprawl and throw your opponent to the ground. In a self defense scenario you should be a boxer on top and a karateka on the bottom and you should know how to scissor quickly into the BJJ guard because your not dealing with people in the same size or skill category like in competitive fighting. They may be larger or faster than you so sprawling could be useless. Krav Maga and Kempo are good arts to learn for self defense in terms of stance and footwork as well as diversity and application of techniques.

very good fundementals. good hip movement, very good footwork, relaxed muscles, good extension. very good snap on the punches and hands come back as fast as they go out. and they come back to proper defensive position. also shoulder covers the chin. why is it that so many pro mma fighters have such piss poor fundamentals? like mcgregor. chin high, shoulders low, bad footwork, hands down all the time, a lot of arm punching.

Honestly, I think the guy thinks so much of himself that he would rather get hit than defend in a match.

no hard feelings budy, but you are wrong if you're saying conor mcgregor have bad basics. Conor has very good basic of boxing, the reason why his hands are low is because he is a counter puncher, so he can properly see his opponent movement. He is indeed a very good counter puncher, 13 second knock out on jose aldo is not " lucky punch" it's his counter punch with really great timing, very good accuracy & his very good fundamentals of boxing.

louis cyfer Bud, it was not even close to a lucky punch. He practiced that exact movement and maneuver before the fight and prepared hard for that movement, his counter punching and basics of boxing are very good, you just don't like him lol.

fightTIPS .Hi, I love your videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. DK Yoo does powerful punches with "tension/relaxation" technic and I wanted to know how to achieve powerful and quick punches and if it's possible to use such technic in a competition?

the truth is... when training you must punch your hardest so then you get the feel that you are working out... if you dont you are just going to not improve your actual power... power is nothing without speed... i can be tensed up and stuff and throw a punch but at the end of the day that power is useless without speed it needs to go with it... thats why your back muscles and hips should only be working for that power + speed...

I think Strength is confused for Power here. A Powerful punch can be acquired from either a "Strong" lugging punch and it can also be acquired from a quick punch i.e. that is to say that both a Juggernaut and a bullet are powerful but for two different reasons. One for the Force propelling the mass and one for the Speed the mass moves with. You always want a "powerful" punch but not a Strong one.
