In this video, Martin Rios discusses why powerlifting is for losers and why powerlifting is stupid. Powerlifting is the worst style of lifting behind things like crossfit, bodybuilding, and athletic bodybuilding. Martin Rios discusses that powerlifting develops fake strength, does not transfer outside the gym well, is bad for athletes and sports performance, and is terrible at building muscle. Whether you are an athlete trying to improve your athleticism or a bodybuilder looking to build an aesthetic physique, powerlifting is not a good option.

You know nothing about power lifting or about fitness. 1. I've been power lifting since I was 20, I'm 77 now, and have done all the exercises you said power lifters don't do, and others, to support my power lifting and athleticism 2. I have done yoga, plyometrics, isometrics, and kettle bell exercises for decades. From 11 to 48 I played basketball, and ran, in addition to my lifting. I then tore my achilles. The doctor said it was from a previous running I jury. 3. BTW I have won 7 IPF world masters titles and 3 Pan American championship titles. 4. Until I hit my mid sixties and suffered a misdiagnosed kidney issue- not lifting related- I had a much more athletic body than you do. 5. I suggest you learn something about power lifting and power lifters before you say even more incorrect and ridiculous things.

That's like saying, if a soccer player lifts weights he's still playing soccer because he does it to help him play soccer. This is why I said "rarely if ever" instead of "never" as I understand they may do it for accessory lifts. They may do other lifts as accessory movements but that is not powerlifting. At the end of the day, the goal of powerlifting is to get better at the squat, bench, and deadlift and not all the other movements nor do they do much power work.

When you talk about power being strength x speed, I don't get it because obviously someone lifting a 600 pound deadlift is going to lift it slowly, but they could lift a 300 pound deadlift very fast as well. It's not like your 300 pound deadlift will be super slow if you are capable of lifting 600 pounds.

he is also acting like powerlifters never do speed work. A top powerlifter who isn't a superheavyweight is gonna be far more athletic than the average gym goer. I believe this video was purely for attention as it's purposefully misleading and stereotypical to make his viewers angry. I am also 90% sure this is not even his true opinion as either him or mario rios (forgot which one) say that you need to sometimes train like a powerlifter if you want to be more athletic

Everything wrong with this video 1. Looks at powerlifting front the competitive side and not looking deeper into the programs. For instance Bill Starr used for accessory work the dips + overhead press combination to build his bench (Both are horizontal presses) Almost all powerlifters for Bent Over Rows for Deadlift carryover and bench press/squat stabilization 2. A ORM is the most useful type of strength because either you lift the weight or you don’t 3. Bro has never heard of straining under heavy weights which causes form breakdown, because he never lifts under 5 he never understands how to strain under those weights 4. The argument “you don’t wear the equipment in real life” is flawed from the start, in 99% of cases, you don’t lift anywhere near enough for the equipment to have its major effects (you also used lifting equipment to show of your rather pathetic strength and it was not at 85% of your ORM, otherwise it would have been 5 reps maximum under a massive strain, which you also never practiced) 5. The powerlifting doesn’t transfer to sports also makes you uneducated over the Conjugate Method, a Method which makes you use a ORM with speed work, SPEED WORK, for rate of force development 6. You discredited your own argument with “powerlifting doesn’t build a lot of muscles” you later said that they use blocks to get muscle, so you admit you are taking things out of your ass because they need that muscle 7. Your obsession with aesthetics will not help with real world strength, which is what you preach so much about In conclusion stay in your lane and butt out of sports where you have no experience with, because your entire KZbin carrier and your brothers can be an argument on why having any type of degree does not mean that you have any knowledge other than “I can answer well on tests”

Powerlifters do plenty of other exercise variations to build their big 3. They dont do just the big 3 (they would stall hard if thats all they were doing). Also 1:25 straps arent alowed in powerlifting so again dumb example. 2:01 again terrible example, straps arent allowed and 2:02 hitching isnt allowed so he would get red lighted for that deadlift and it woulnd pass. As far as explosiveness westside conjugate literally has dynamic effort day where you do light weights with bands and lift them as explosively as possible and that was training for powerlifters. Once again Rios bros show their Dunning Kruger effect.

The solution ur giving is essentially Westside-style of conjugate training. Conjugate = training for absolute strength, speed-strength/power & hypertrophy all at once instead of separating them into hypertrophy/strength/power blocks Westside-style = rotating max lifts weekly in order to prevent overuse injuries & improve absolute strength on different variations of movements (as mentioned in the vid), adding bands & chains to speed lifts for accommodating resistance & to improve rate of force development, followed by hypertrophy work to improve muscle mass While it’s true that ego lifting with poor form has no real benefit and solely training for absolute strength on one variation of the 3 lifts doesn’t have the best transfer to athletic performance, to suggest that absolute strength is utterly useless is simply false cuz 100% of the time a stronger person can move any given weight faster than a weaker person ever cud. With that being said, as u already mentioned in the video, athletes shud use the newly acquired strength from max lifts to train for speed/power in order to fully realise their athletic potential, to which I firmly agree with. I also agree with the fact that hypertrophy work is crucial cuz unless one is still a novice, the only way one cud get stronger and thus more powerful in the long term is to improve muscle mass. And the best way to do so is to train in the hypertrophy rep-range (ie no less than 5-6 reps)

Accessory work and hypertrophy work is not powerlifting, that's why you literally just called it "accessory work" and "hypertrophy work" and not "powerlifting". That's like saying if a soccer player lifts weights on the side, he's still playing soccer. Powerlifting revolves around getting better at the squat, bench, and deadlift and that's it. If they do accessory work it's not to master those other movements but rather just to get better at the squat bench and deadlift and it is not heavily prioritized in their routine.

What if powerlifters are training primarily squat, bench, and deadlift because they enjoy powerlifting? What if their goal isn’t to be “athletes”, which is vague regardless. What a person does with their time is arbitrary-if they enjoy doing it and it has value to them, that’s all that matters.
