I am an outside machinist and I fix submarines and aircraft carriers so I get how small measurements have to be. we use all the precision tools (outside mic, inside mic, intramik, vernier calipers, dial indicators, etc). its crazy how you can't even see something but it effects rotating machinery's durability and function and the feel of a big ball valve or if it leaks, (obviously its a big deal on a submarine) even just. 0.0010" makes a huge difference especially on fitted bolts and bearings. I did something last night that required a 0.0000-.00006 clearance. Crazy shit

You guys have a great program.....never miss it. Torrington bearings are the most under-used bearings there are....Bravo! Have built many engines but stumped exactly how you design a cam to favor two-barrel carbs......can you enlighten us all out here with somewhat of an explanation that adds up? Thanks for all you show. The List 4412 500 cfm is a really sweet carb. I noticed that you are using a slotted spacer underneath the carb. I have found that using a 4-bbl manifold sometimes indexing the carb a little forward or back on the manifold can make over 10 hp difference and certainly can balance cylinder to cylinder fuel distribution. I've not reached the end of the video yet...have you tried that?

Yep... instantly noticed that also. That engine is a turd. 8 inch massive balancer .. just fantastic for slowing racecars down twice a lap. I guarantee I make more power with a 384.57. It's a nice over square idea though. 14:1 compression with no crackle. I'm not happy unless I'm making at least 1.2hp/cu.in.

Yea but as long as everything is torqued down correctly and the bolts for the intake plate are in good and the chain on the engine lift is good I say go at it my family and I are full of mechanics backyard and ASE certified and sometimes both plus we have motorcycle builders and mechanics in my family so if it has wheels and an engine whether it be Ford,Chevy,and or Mopar and Japanese and Harleys,Customs,and Japanese motorcycles someone in my family can work on them and I've seen engines picked up like that plenty of times and also using a manual chain engine hoist using a tree limb to pull the engine out of the car so I say when in Rome do what the Romans do and that's use the tools that you have to work with you just have to be smarter than the tool your working with

Well in East TN we have a sportsman late model class which has a steelhead option and you can run a 602 or 604 crate with the seals broken on them in the sportsman class so a used maybe 2006 grt or masterbilt rolling chassis with winters rear non adjustable shocks wheels tires about 2 to 4k range on racing junk.com or Facebook market place a rebuilt 602 crate with the seals broken I've seen some that do great on the track for about 1200 on the marketplace before very affordable engine makes decent power for what it is and a brinn or Bert direct drive I've seen em in good used condition anywhere from 300$ to 900$ if you look in the right spot used kirkey seat 80 to150$ steering wheel 10$ used and all accessories needed plus the harder compound tires so you don't have to run new tires every week people that say racing is expensive are the ones that think you have to be up front if you just wanna get a late model to the track and have some fun and don't care about winning not so much I can afford it I could probably afford to be up front I choose not to I make 20$ an hour my wife makes about the same with 2 kids and bills it cost roughly 500 a week I've seen people spend twice that a week to go golfing some people have side by sides some muscle cars some boats as their toys this is the same concept

Why does the second compression ring need a larger gap than the top ring? I thought the top ring was exposed to the most heat, therefore needing a larger gap than the second.??
@toyotabob7535
@toyotabob7535 3 жыл бұрын
Gas gets trapped between the rings. The only way for gas to leave is down. It's not going up because of compression. Without extra ring gap to let the gas out, it escapes by lifting the 2 ring off the wall. A bigger gap on the 2nd ring seals the motor better. Every ring manufacturer recommends a bigger gap on the 2nd but total seal....

Grass roots are NOT late models in any configuration, all are big bucks$$$$$$$$. This engine should have been built with an iron flat tapped cam. Block and heads were right a pro/super stock would have been a better engine to build. Then follow with an IMCA street stock……..bad choice in my opinion.

A larger engine will make more power than a smaller one even with the 4412. I have a circle track engine a flat top piston 355 Chevy that I built for a customer that makes 500 horsepower. Just for fun I did a couple of pulls using that same 4412 carburetor on a 454 small block that I also built and it made 530 horsepower. The 355 has about 1000 pulls worth of development work and the 454 had zero.

@DaveMcLain

@@ablaylock4273 My 454 small block made 600 horsepower and dropped about 70. Could your engine drop a little less than that and make 520? Probably. In my testing I found no horsepower advantage to running E-85 on the 355 engine with the 4412 but that engine is really well developed with gasoline too it didn't run worse but it didn't run better. I flogged it a lot too. I've never tested a 4412 with methanol but that stuff would probably be worth some power.

Dave McLain thanks for the reply. I've got a 2nd Gen ump street stock I picked up for a decent price. I also have 427 big block I've had for years. L88 specs but with iron heads and Victor jr intake. gonna put engine in car with direct drive glide and 6.20 gear. it might be a handful in the corners but how could it not compete? we shall see.
