✍ Battle of Mullaitivu (1996)
The final battle between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan Army in Mullaithivu marked a significant turning point in the decades-long conflict in Sri Lanka. As the Sri Lankan government intensified its military operations against the LTTE in the early 2000s, Mullaithivu became a crucial battleground.
In the closing stages of the conflict, the LTTE, led by Velupillai Prabhakaran, found themselves besieged in a small pocket of territory in Mullaithivu. Surrounded by the advancing Sri Lankan Army, the LTTE faced intense military pressure and dwindling resources. The final battle was a desperate struggle for survival, with both sides fiercely committed to their cause.
The Sri Lankan Army launched a massive offensive, employing heavy artillery, airstrikes, and ground troops to encircle and neutralize the LTTE stronghold. The battle was characterized by intense combat, with reports of heavy casualties and widespread destruction.
Despite the LTTE's long-standing reputation for fierce resistance, they were ultimately overwhelmed by the superior firepower and strategic advancements of the Sri Lankan military. On May 18, 2009, the Sri Lankan Army announced the death of Velupillai Prabhakaran, marking the end of the LTTE's armed struggle.
The final battle of LTTE vs Sri Lankan Army in Mullaithivu remains a deeply contentious and emotive chapter in Sri Lanka's history, with lingering questions about the human cost of the conflict and the pursuit of lasting peace and reconciliation.
