One of the events I prep for is "Too sick to go to the store." So I do have dry cereal in my preps with shelf stable milk. Most cereal is safe to eat long past its best by date. Plus, in an actual SHTF, on Day 1 you're going to be busy gathering intel and dealing with the aftermath, not cooking. So I think ready to consume foods can be a great prep.

If you buy those plastic bags of flavored rice mixes, flavored pasta mixes or flavored mashed potato mixes there is a way to store them a lot longer before they would go rancid. Just use scissors to cut a one-inch opening in the top of each bag, then drop three or four of these bags of dehydrated mixes into a gallon size Mylar bag, add one oxygen absorber to the Mylar bag, press out the extra air and heat-seal the Mylar right away. Use a Sharpie marker and a roll of painter's tape to make labels for each sealed Mylar bag of dry mixes so you know what is inside. I write the name of the food and the month and year I packaged the items on my homemade label. Because each bag of dry mix is still in its original plastic bag, you will still have the cooking instructions and the nutritional information for each mix. You can do the same with dry soup mixes and cake mixes and get a few extra years of storage this way. This is a wise way to stock up on food when you find a good sale. The length of storage of these dry mixes is mainly limited by the amount of fat in them. Low fat or fat-free mixes could store more than ten years in a cool, vermin-free pantry when re-packaged in Mylar with oxygen absorbers. I would not try to go beyond ten years of storage with any mix that has more than a few grams of fat. If you re-package in Mylar plain, dry spaghetti pasta or plain, dry macaroni pasta or any other of the plain dry pastas that are made from white flour, you could get 20 years of storage and no weevils hatching out. You can also re-package to colorful dry pastas that have spinach, carrot of beet puree in them so long as they are made from white flour and not whole grain flour. You can re-package rolled oats, instant oatmeal, pancake and waffle mixes, regular grits and flavored instant grits in Mylar along with oxygen absorbers. It costs less to re-package dry food for longer storage than to have to keep rotating and replacing that same food every six to twelve months. With inflation, the food you buy now and use years later will likely cost you less than the same food that you wait a few years to buy. Consider what food items cost five years ago compared to what you pay today. How much will this same food cost five years from now? Food storage is insurance against hunger if you lose your income for months or if the supply chain is disrupted for months. Food storage can also be a hedge against inflation if prices keep rising.

If there are longterm power outages you can use a small portable charcoal grill and burn twigs to boil water. You can find them cheap under $10. If you can boil water you can cook pasta, rice, lentils, split peas and instant mashed potatoes. Also oatmeal. Save butane and other fuel for bad weather days. If anyone finds themselves without even a cheap grill you can make a circle of stones and build a small fire with twigs to boil water.

The Spanish food section has a large jar of powdered tomato. It's makes things taste great. And the kids powdered milk has the vitamins and some milk fats. You can make butter out of it..And is a good alternative for a formula for babies without allergies to milk. The Sazon bouillon is good in your soup. Makes the broth taste richer. And if you have never tried Navy beans they are delicious. And green chillies in can are good. I get the chicken in the packets and the Knorr packets of like cheddar and broccoli. To put together for my own MRE type food packet. For my go bag. I get the Folgers in a foil stick as well. Put those in my MRE packet. With some fake sugar. You can get the large cans of green beans # 10 can. And then pressure can what you don't use. You can pressure can those large cans of the cheese sauce as well.. It's with rebel canning. I have purchased several 5 gallon bottles for water. You can also purchase a pump that fits on top of the jug. To pump it out. I have really reduced all the soap and cleaning products. Down to very basic.

Dried corn: great snack or rehydrate in soups, Mexican food, whatever you like. Sugar: Like you I live in a very warm climate so I started re-packaging in 1/2 gallon Ball jars with oxygen absorbers to guard against bugs/ants. Yes, it gets hard but a butter knife breaks it up enough to dump out of the jar and then it can be broken up completely. Lasts forever. I don't trust mylar when it comes to tearing or mice. Same for rice, grits, and other dry goods. Thanks for taking us through your Walmart, it looks similar in stock levels to ours.

I am in NV and several of the canned meats etc that you were showing are NOT available in my state. I even looked online and tried to have the items shipped by walmart and no go :( I know everyone probably has a meal that they can remember that just blew them away. It tasted soo good at the time and the memory of it has just stuck with them. FOR ME..... I had just had a MAJOR surgery and it was extremely intense after. The first meal I was given after was a cup of broth. When I tell you that was the BEST "meal" I have EVER had in my life it is not an exaggeration. THAT should tell you just how desperate I was at the time. This has always stuck with me so separate from my "food" preps and in my extensive my medical preps I have some of the following: tang/electrolyte packets, broth cubes and a couple jello packets. I have these separated so IF someone is recovering from an illness these could really aid in the recovery process and building back up strength.

Grandma lived during the great depression and My Mom&Dad grew up during it the younger days...my Dad never liked chicken 😂 because he said that's the only meat they mostly could get 🕊️💞🕊️🙏🙏🙏

@Sunshine State Survival yes they really do and every now and then I eat them also. The oil in the sardines are good for you, they have them with hot sauce and other flavors, we generally get the plain and hot sauce with saltines

I went to Walmart after not having been in there in a year Bought shoes, and tomato seeds. I have been going to dollartree, have bought forty small cans of chicken breast so far. It's handy for one person. I got my wind generator and got it put up. Turns out they sent a 12 instead of a 24 volts like I ordered...

Jiffy mix is good and not a terrible idea to store but if you are already storing flour and baking supplies all you need is a bag of corn meal once you make it it's really a simple recipe and much better th a n the mix ones

Thx sunshine. Another great video. Hope everyone is paying attention. I do have to disagree on one thing, I tried the bbq pork, and it was awful. I gave a bunch to local church food bank. Afterward I felt guilty, thing I may have made people sick. I’m glad you like it though, I feel a little less guilty now. LOL.

@@sunshinestatesurvival What is up with the price of canned mushrooms these days- I noticed they have really gone up in price. I will say that I have used BBQ sauce well past the date and it has been fine, but of course I always say a person needs to be comfortable with that. I liked this shopping video- I am in Pa and your wallyworld items vary wildly from ours! I haven't purchase the roast beef before- I want to try it now. I have only seen castleberry hot dog chili sauce up north- we love that stuff.

thanks a lot. Some of those items look good but I've never seen them in Indiana e.g. the beans. Where do I get Mylar bags and do you have to use an absorber in them? thanks.
@sunshinestatesurvival

I have a link in the description for the Wallaby mylar bags that I use... and yes I would use an oxygen absorber. Just make sure that the items you're storing are okay to go in mylar bags with O2 absorbers. There are tons of helpful prepping websites that will tell you what can be stored that way, and what can't

Something ridiculous I heard is we ship our apples to china and the make our apple juice and send it back. About two-thirds of the U.S. apple juice supply now comes from China. ☹️

@@lynnheffron6905 obviously not cheaper because they wouldn’t send our apples there. Definitely safer if made here. It’s just messed up how much stuff we have made in china

Totally off topic here: I have not lived in Fla for 30 years but grew up there. Um, when did boiled peanuts get canned? 🙂 We used to just buy ours from the guy on the street corner that had a little camp fire under a 50 gal barrel full of peanuts boiling. He would scoop them into a paper cup and they were the best darn peanuts ever!
