Prerequisites for running after knee replacement surgery
Returning to running or jogging after knee replacement surgery is not for everyone. It is important to listen to your surgeon's advice and have realistic expectations.
That being said, before returning to running it is important that you are able to meet certain prerequisites, or benchmarks, that you should try to meet to ensure that you're ready to try to run or jog after surgery.
In this video physical therapist Dr. Luke discusses the top benchmarks he looks for when deciding if a patient is ready to try some light jogging / running after knee replacement surgery.

This was great information. My Replacements were in 2018 and 2019 and I have no pain no swelling no discomfort. I just started Jeff Galloway run walk run and I'm mainly walking right now but I'm slowly adding in the run with no difficulty. It'll be a ways away before I get to running more than I'm taking breaks but it's good to know this information. My doctor retired right after my surgery so I don't have anybody to go to regarding my surgeon.

Thank you for watching, I'm glad you found this advice helpful. I'll have to look up Jeff Galloway's program. Best of luck with getting back into running/jogging. Will be interesting to see how it progresses.

@@KneeReplacementTherapists Hi. Did you ever look up Jeff Galloway? I ran a half mile without stopping. Yay! I walked 10 minutes before and after.

I am 32 and already had to have a TKR a nasty tibia plateu fracture 2 years ago, had no pain when it happened. Been on and off crutches since then. TKR was complete but 6 weeks post op I tear my outer ligament. Will be undergoing a TKR with hinges. Last year my diagnosis was confirmed with osteomalacia, nobody in my family has it or any bone rated issues. To this day is for me to get a TKR where I'm able to walk again, only a blunt dream of ever being able to run again so I'm asking you the likelihood of me being running.again is quite unlikely?

Without performing a personal assessment or knowing your whole background, it sounds like running again would be very challenging. I recommend consulting with your surgeon as they know the most about your knee and medical history and give you the most appropriate answer.

So glad I found you today! You were so helpful with my Baker's Cyst question (from another video). Here's another question - I was a runner for 40 years before having my TKR in October, 2019. As I mentioned earlier today, I have developed a Baker's Cyst within the past 10 months or so. Will the cyst preclude me from trying to starting jogging again? My doctor advises against it but he did say he has patients who have returned to running but he doesn't recommend it (not because of the cyst but because of the knee replacement itself). I don't expect to go back doing marathons again but I would love to be able to run 3-4 miles at a time. I walk several times a week (20 miles weekly total) and periodically throw in 30 second jogs which the knee seems to be feel okay while doing it. The cyst does seem to bother me more when I've been more active. I'm just concerned about making the cyst worse. What do you think? Thank you so much.

With jogging it can be an increased stress for the knee in general and this may lead to some irritation and inflammation, which may make your symptoms worse. I would probably recommend at least giving it a few months before prolonged jogging to try to get the discomfort from the bakers cyst to calm down first...If you do feel like trying some jogging, I think you're doing it the right way with some short durations interspersed with walking and keep the volume very very low

This tends to vary from person to person. Sometimes it is the middle or lateral part of the knee, the front of the knee at the kneecap or throughout the entire knee joint. There can be various presentations.
