It also turns Lucy into a shadow of her former self destroyed and Isolated by that act. Which cause more guilt for Tom. While I agree It's a horrible thing. It's something that does happen and is the only thing that hit's the impact and horror spot. As regular assault wouldn't be enough to justify all the stuff he does to them later e.g. false imprisonment when he plants cocaine in their homes. and killing her wouldn't allow him to see the guilt of what his failure did to her and the happy ending when he saves her and helps her through the traumatic experience. It's also based on the book so blame the author if you really want to, not the show.

I read the book when I was like 13 and loved it. Not sure if it was actually good though; it's been 5 years and I was an impressionable nerd.
