I prefer Bold Generation, because I prefer the music instrumentals arrangement of the song, which is more funky. And what really makes the original demo better, is it has a freshness and spontaneity that’s lost in ‘New Power Generation’. The same way that Tick, Tick, Bang sounds contrived and manufactured on ‘Graffiti Bridge’ compared to the original early 80s demo which is a fantastic version.

You really did your homework by actually explaining in great detail instead of just what you think is better. I totally agree both are great but, NPG feels more mature & I can feel the spiritual growth which was always fascinating to experience with Prince. Btw, thanks for the snippet of Beautiful Night (my jam). There will never come a day when I see or hear Prince and it won't move me.💜

Isn’t Bold Generation the only track on the 1999 Deluxe that was recorded through analogue tape? I read or heard that from somewhere. Saying Bold Generation vs. NPG is like saying We Can Fuck vs We Can Funk, one has more rawness, and the other has a cleaned up and polished sound.

Honestly, they’re both good. Bold Generation mostly sounds bare though because obviously it’s a demo. If you want to get technical though Musically New Power Generation is more advanced/superior in its arrangement. I personally prefer New Power Generation I do like the bareness of Bold Generation it sounds more of a song that could have been on Dirty Mind or Controversy if it was mixed a little better it definitely could have held its own during that era. I want to add when I say bare I don’t literally mean bare because obviously it has a lot of instruments I mean it’s mix isn’t leveled out completely. Bold Generation sounds to me almost like a live version of New Power Generation. If they leveled out the mix meaning using compressors or just leveling the volume of the instruments and vocals on Bold Generation it could sounds as good New Power Generation.

Thank God Bold Generation wasnt released because if we didn't Have N.P.G......Id be dead ya hear me.....DEAD! Morris Day on drums holding down the pocket, the power in his playing needed something to match it and the dark and open sound in B.G. just wasnt enough. It sounds like a lost Vanity 6 song tbh. Story time: My parents had only two prince albums: Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge. Purple Rain was my entry point. I listened to it thoroughly in my late teen years. I got to know Prince through it and came to know it’s sound as Prince’s sonic palette. So by the time I got around to sampling Graffiti Bridge, I was jarred by the massive sonic shift that had taken place, having been largely ignorant to the 5 albums that bridged the gap between “Rain” and “Bridge” (6 if you count the Black Album). I was born in 1990 and was accustomed to hearing those kinds of New Jack Swing sounds coming from other artists, but didn’t expect to hear them coming out of Prince. It took me a long time to warm up to it. This has kind of colored my opinion on Bold vs New. While I heard New Power Generation long before I heard Bold Generation, I still have got to say that I prefer the sonic palette Prince was working within in that early to mid 80s era. So on one hand “Bold” is a bit more in my lane. However, I really do love “New” and obviously it is the more finished product of the two. So I’m pretty much undecided here. I think had Prince gotten around to finishing the song and had released it somewhere between when this demo was recorded and, say, 1986, I probably would have preferred that finished product over what we got with “New.”

I can listen to you talk about Prince all day. Your perspective is so remarkable and refreshing to hear. I, too love New Power Generation for the funkiness and the overall message of stop living in the past. We can honor the past, but the longer we stay there the less things change.

The reason why it sounds more original and sounds like a Prince sound and vibe especially at that time.. But like you said I like both songs myself New Power Generation still a good song and a underrated track

I really love Bold Generation sonically: it’s not overproduced or sounding disorganized. I’m glad that the Bold Generation evolved into the New Power Generation. The original sounds so typically 80’s, but not “Prince 80’s” in my opinion. I don’t think that it would have been as enjoyable to listen to in the 80’s as it was in its evolved form. The New Power Generation has improved timing, tone, and overall production value.

I just listened to Bold Generation for the first time and yeah, i agree with you. NPG is better. I guess lot of fans say the earlier version is better just because it's 80s Prince. And 80s Prince is my favorite Prince too, but it doesn't mean some of his best albums aren't from the 90s and 00s. A really cool version though, and i always love to hear early versions of songs. Hey Prince's Friend 👋🏼, How are you today? I hope everything's going well with you! So a few minutes ago, I just viewed this video of the comparison of "The Bold Generation" and "The New Power Generation". Then shortly after that, I listened to both versions of the song. What I like most about Bold Generation is that it is stripped of everything I hate about New Power Generation. I'm sorry PF, I know you started with Graffiti Bridge, but it has always been a disappointing album for me. It has one too many bad versions of previously unreleased tracks. To me it represented a change from him being a trend setter to him trying to keep up with current trends in the early 90's. The first bad sign from the album was New Power Generation. "Lay down your funky weapon" is arguably his worst intro ever to a song. It's so corny, so..not cool. But it gets worse from there when out of nowhere some hype man (I thought it was MC Hammer when I first heard it) starts "rapping" something generic that was so common back then. This was such a let down for me at the time because I had always known Prince to be too cool for rap. He supposedly didnt care for it. I thought he would never go there with his music. NPG was the moment he finally gave in to hip hop's popularity. The cheesy sound effects along with the bizarre circus sounding bridge in the song only add to its awfulness. Bold Generation is not the greatest but it at least has that classic Prince sound whereas New Power Generation sounds very dated, generic of late 80's pop and r&b. Hearing Bold Generation for the first time was a pleasant surprise. It is nice to know there is a cool song underneath that mess he laid on the track in 1990.

Great matchup! I appreciate both versions for different reasons, but I listen to “Bold” more than “New Power.” It reminds me of that ‘80s Gap Band electro-funk, and it’s cool how Prince adds his own flavor to it. Side note: Ain’t it funny how much of ‘Graffiti Bridge’ looks backwards? Some of the best songs were recorded between 1982-1988. (i.e., “Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got,” “The Question of U,” “Elephants and Flowers,” “Joy in Repetition,” and “Still Would Stand All Time,” etc.) I guess that’s Prince for you LOL!
@PrincesFriend4 жыл бұрын
I have a followup about what exactly! Graffiti Bridge and Batman both are compromised of older tracks. That’s the thing. After Lovesexy, Prince has Paisley Park and finally had access to the recording facility of his dreams to bring those old songs that just didn’t work back to life. That’s how I see Batman and GB myself
@chrislacy19904 жыл бұрын
Prince's Friend I’m with you. Based on the research I did on ‘Batman,’ the oldest track from those sessions was “Feel U Up.” Everything else was recorded from June 1988 to March 1989.

@ruminantmelanoid54444 жыл бұрын
I have an Early-80's-Prince bias in the interest of full disclosure. That said, I am truly torn between the two tracks. Bold Generation, being an earlier track has a palpable vitality missing from NPG. Prince was still figuring out the studio and his songwriting approach. 1999 was the project that garnered him his first top ten pop hit in LRC. He was still trying to suss out exactly who his audience was, and how to connect with them. So there was a kind of experimentation taking place that was absent in his later work. That experimentation yielded an energy that comes across in Bold, even though it was a demo. NPG, although it was missing Bold's particular vitality, was lyrically superior. "New Power Generation" just rolls off the tongue better. Also despite missing the musical "pop" that Bold had. NPG has a polish and a more sophisticated aesthetic that Prince simply was not capable of in his earlier work. Finally Prince, himself, waited until Graffiti Bridge to unleash NPG in the form we heard it. Who am I to second guess the man himself. Therefore, even though I prefer his early 80's aesthetic to his later work, I yield to his judgment and give the nod to NPG.

Lyrically, the older song feels loosely like a follow up to Party Up. Funny considering that Morris is playing Bold Generation and wrote Party Up. Bold Generation, I've only listened to once or twice on 1999 Deluxe. It's not even because of the audio quality because I LOVE Rearrange. Final answer? I prefer New Power Generation.

Also the idea behind the lyrics does seem to fit the current mood of the political and world scene, much like that of the 80's. Of course I am also a fan of evolution especially when it comes to Prince's music... This song, Xtralovable, The Dance, Possessed, etc. all show how one thing can potentially be even better. Respectfully of course, New Power Generation was tinny sounding and for me too generic sounding to be Prince. It was around the time, I think, that Prince thought he 'had' to sound the way he did on this album, and he NEVER usually felt like he 'had' to do anything, but you could hear that opposite pouring out of Graffiti Bridge. For me, the next album was definitely Prince back to being Prince again. Also naturally, whilst it was interesting to find out about this song via the Deluxe 1999 release, having known I already didn't much enjoy the reworked version, I wasn't clamouring to hear it again :P HOWEVER, I will say that I LOVED all the various spin-off songs he did from New Power Generation on the maxi-single release, and that is one I have to track down on CD-single (still quite easy to get hold of for a sensible price right now).

It and We Can Fuck from Purple Rain Deluxe just make me want to go listen to Graffiti Bridge. I also got into Prince in the early 90's, and I know what you mean about New Power Generation being one of those songs that makes you feel invited in and embraced by Prince's music.

Call generation to me it's better because it keeps it simple a lot of time the simpler the better. Although I do like to lay down your funky weapon parts

I just revisited them for a refresher. That's a toughie. I think it's also a matter of which one fits better in their respective albums. The stripped down minimalist funk of Bold Generation would obviously have fit 1999 better if it had made the cut. But New Power Generation fits better with Graffiti Bridge's overall sound. I will say I'm not always a fan of Prince's layering. It got away from him in the late 80s & early 90s & I don't think it always worked, but in this case, yes, it does work. But burying Morris Day's fantastic drumming is a bit of a loss. Too close to call for me.

Thank U for this video I was unaware of this earlier demo version. I like it but prefer NPG for its invitation to everyone to be better.

You should definitely check both out. They have their ups and downs. I prefer the latter version as well though

naw, both of dem phenomenal! wita different spin, Bold Gerneration iz mo of a H🏠use jam wita slower groove but NPG iz mo of a Club banger wita faster groove & datz tha difference between da 2 but both have that Minneapolis Sound purple twist 2 it! 🎵
