PRINCE - Santana Medley Reaction!

One of my Prince stories..Ran into Carlos Santana at a Prince concert in San Jose CA. mid nineties. I mean literally ran smack into the man trying to navigate the crowd on the floor section. We both said "OOps, Sorry" and continued on our way. I turned to my girlfriend and said "That was freakin' Carlos Santana!!!" It was later confirmed as he joined Prince on stage for a four song medley of Santana's songs. It was as badass as you could possibly imagine, the two of them trading off licks and jamming together, I thought the stage was going to spontaneously combust!!! Gettin' a little emotional thinking about it. Santana was my dads absolute favorite artist and Prince was mine, Prince has been gone six years now and my dads been gone a year in June, next month. As a child I was immersed in Santana's music thru my father, and when I came of age I found my own Rock God. The one and only Prince.

"Her on keys" Brilliant!! I can see how that could be easily said haha...still watching this...it's one of my faves! Brilliant choice and reaction. Santana loved this medley so much that he then started throwing it into his own shows!! Covering these songs would have come a lot more naturally to him than anything else, because, as you have eluded to, Santana was one of his earliest influences and from early bandmate accounts, he could play Santana note for note as a kid. Loved this band, my first show was the following year at Wembley with this set-up!

Great reaction. Yes. That was Michael Bland on drums. I agree he is right there with John Blackwell. The keyboard player is Tommy Barbarella. For this era, he and Morris Hayes both played most sets. Sonny T is on the bass here too. It’s funny how the more anyone hears more of a given lineup, the more they tend to appreciate it. Prince has great musicians and they must have rehearsed so much

Like Michael Bland, the 90s lineup missed out on a lot of recognition because Prince wasn’t as “popular” and because of the drain of the dispute with Warner. After 2000, he still wasn’t “popular” but a lot of his most famous performances came during that period and his tours were just so good and better financially with simpler production and still very high quality.

This is my favorite guitar moment of Prince, next to the Something In The Water soundcheck from 1985. His melodic sensiblity, the amount of techniques he goes over, the different motifs he keeps bringing on like 7:39 to 7:53, I don't know if I can name a guitar player with an ear like that... It's wild. I also want to point out a few things that amaze me for other guitar players to check out. 1 - I've mentioned this in other videos but Prince always connected his licks, he never simply lifts of his finger and goes to another section of the fretboard - which is something that always bugged me about Santana, he was very... "disconnected" - , if he starts a lick, he finds a way to finish it, either with a slide up or down, a run down the scale or some "noise", a nice example is at 1:08 (run down) 6:59 (slide down) 2 - This kind of follows the last point, but atests to Prince's ear and how specific he was with what he was playing, check at 7:29 how he runs down that scale, and then slides his index finger down one fret to catch that last note. 3 - Check how glued Prince was to the rhythm section, 7:47 is a perfect example of it, you can hear every note landing on the kick and snare perfectly. What I'm trying to say is that apart from the theatrics and the showmanship, this was someone who must have had to dedicate hours and hours to practice multiple genres of guitar playing.

Amazing analysis 👌🎸 I'd like to hear some details from someone around him at the time regarding how much time he spent merely playing an instrument for practice. It seems that Paisley Park and having a band on payroll meant he just worked everything out in rehearsal... But I find it impossible to believe he wasn't still doing time alone with the instruments, analysing other artists, to keep progressing. There's a story of him flying a keyboardist out from the UK to Paisley Park to ask him what the guy had played on his band's record... Prince kept him waiting, obviously, walked in, no pleasantries, played the guy's keyboard part up until a point and then asked "what did you play next?". The guy demo'd it... Prince said 'oh' and walked out. No pleasantries. The manager had to go in and tell the guy they didn't need him anymore and he'd be taken back to the airport! 😂😂😂 But it shows he was analysing other songs and I wonder if it was during those times he added to his "library of chops".

@@thesolitaryadventurer I briefly spoke with Jessie Jackson from The Time, another amazing guitar player, and he simply described Prince as being addicted to playing. He would not rest, he would soundcheck for hours, then The Time would play and he would be there watching, and then he would perform for hours, and then he would go to clubs and play for a few more hours. A lot of the metal shredding you started hearing around 85 was something he picked up from Jessie, in some bootlegs you can even hear Prince call Jessie's attention before playing some stuff he picked up from him.

Great reaction... Attended all 3 gigs at Glam Slam Miami in 1994. Superb shows. It was Michael Bland on drums, very cool friendly guy. The person on keyboards wasn't "she", it was Tommy Barberella (real name Thomas Elm). He had long hair. Played with the NPG from around 1991 to 1996.

@@Ed7501 The club opened on the night of the first of the 3 gigs in 1994. His birthday night 7 June, followed by 8 & 9 June. It closed in February 1996. There were 4 Glam Slam Clubs, went to 3 of them ( MPLS, LA, Miami) but didn't get to the Yokohama one. During the 1995 tour , the Astoria, was renamed "Glam Slam London" for his Aftershows and Afterparties, but wasn't an official club.

Great reaction choice. I wish you could have seen Santana and Prince jam together. For many years Santana always said Prince was the most underappreciated guitarist because he always knew the truth. I got to see them jam together several times. It was always special. Santana actually started incorporating this very medley into his own shows for a time because even he loved it. Santana was one of Prince's main influences and musical hero's. LOL, she is Tommy Barbarella on keyboards of the original NPG band 1990-1995. Fantastic musician too.

Jimi was as well but for some reason he never liked to admit that. Maybe he didn't want to be compared to Jimi and wanted Jimi to have his own lane, who knows but later in life he did admit it. LOL I heard an interview where Jesse Johnson told Prince "knock it off, I hear the Jimi influence in your playing". We all know Jesse was a beast on guitar as well.

This is my favorite era. In my opinion Mayte was the only back up performer Prince ever who was capable of pulling attention from him. The Twin's, Cat, etc were fantastic but it was always Prince's show. Mayte was able to take moments and make them her own. A fantastic accessory on stage.

Santana was one of his inspirations in the early days, along with Sly, Earth Wind & Fire et al. The keyboard player looks like Tommy Barbarella who was with Prince from 1990 to 1996. Prince was a true fashionista and I haven't seen one concert where he's stayed in the one outfit lol - don't know how many wardrobe changes he would do, but he always looked fantastic 💜

Bland is a beast and he used to play at a local Minn. club called Bunkers,with the house band called Dr. Mambos Combos on Sun. and Mondays....that house bad was amazing and often Jellybean Johnson the drummer for The Time would sit in on guitar,and his chops were right up there with Prince suprisingly...must be something in the cold and water in the mid west.

Perhaps the singular performance that shows how his chops as a great rhythm player informed his approach to playing lead guitar. Dude was simply a beast. I've only just stopped laughing at "who's the girl on keys?" 🤣 You can hear how his lead playing was influenced by Carlos. But it became so much more. There's everyone in there Eddie Hazel, Jimi, SRV... It does him a disservice to say just Carlos really. But it also shouldn't be said that he is better than all those others at doing their thing as he wasn't. He just was this great melting pot of lead guitar ability. Now that right hand and the funk and the rhythm playing - that's a whole batch of other folks isn't it? Ike Turner, Nile Rogers... Totally different ability and often overlooked. Just ask Wendy how hard it is to play lead even if you are great at rhythm... 😉 That band and those late night sweaty club performances. A highlight amongst many highlights. Mayte dancing never irritated me at the time but I look back now and she's not a patch on Cat Glover. Just as each dancer after Mayte was a pale imitation time and again... Maybe that's why he tried different ideas out and settled on The Twinz. Glam Slam Miami a decade after Miami Vice. I would imagine you'd fail a test from just breathing the air in that room! 😂

Tommy Barbarella is the most underrated musician of prince's bands in my opinion. He would be a great interview. He helped write more prince songs then people realize. But you guys should get him for a interview. He'd be great to talk about things like rehearsals and how they all wrote together. The symbol album, diamonds and Pearl's and the gold experience is all tommy barbarella on keys for the most part I believe.

First of all Prince was a guitar GOD and a GENIUS musician / composer.. Also Prince is technically a waayyyyyyy better guitarist than Carlos is and/or was in his prime. Can't praise Prince enough for all his work and skills. RIP. Having that said...there is only ONE Carlos Santana. And although there are plenty of technically better guitarists than Carlos...the man is a genius in his choice of melodic lead guitar compositions in Latin Rock music which created his unique signature style. It's one thing to try to copy it, and some may come pretty close but nobody can really nail it.. However in his genre Carlos is the only one to compose such iconically unique melodic sounding signature solos.... Which most likely is the reason why Prince loved Santana music so much...along with the off the chart percussion. As a die hard Santana fan I can appreciate Princes hommage to Santana in this video....wish he still was with us.

Don’t you wonder how he fell under the radar with regard to his talent. Was it lack of promotion, which he didn’t do, or no radio play, which I think was intentionally promoted by some people.

For me when I was younger, I collected every guitar magazine religiously every month from the late 80's to mid 90's... that was a big source of my music information, I don't recall seeing anything about him in the magazines. In the local media, video shows etc... I don't remember much of his guitar work, just more the singing and dancing aspect (Thieves in the Temple etc...)
