This tier list is a fascinating look at how much context matters for whether a pokemon is good. So many mons in lower tiers that are A or S rank in romhacks or some competitive formats, thanks to their hidden abilities.

@@ApenasUmIdiota bulbasaur destroys the first 2 gyms, resists lt. Surge in the third one and is neutral to Erika in the fourth gym. Plus he has sleep powder pretty early and sleep is broken in gen 1. He’s only bad against Sabrina and in the seventh gym against Blaine’s fire type but by that point you should have a full team of 6 available which can beat that. Squirtel is great but isn’t just as great as Bulbasaur as he loses against Surge and he has a lot of competition with Gyarados for your water type on your team. Charmander is only nice to have for Erika but you get fire type alternatives right there. You can get Vulpix or Growlith dependent on which edition you had, or you evolve your free Eevee into Flareon and teach it flamethrower. You can also just use a flying type.

Testicular cancer is noticeable by swelling or uneven growth of the testicle. Also if the swelling is, for example, inside the testicle, it will die off. Which hurts alot. Like getting kicked in the balls, but worse.

Ever since sword and shield I've made it my mission to play through any new pokemon game with a team of pink pokemon (and I name my trainer Pinkamon obviously). I'd be curious to see how you'd build a team around a theme like this, it makes for a challenging playthrough with such a limited pool of pokemon, I can't even imagine how difficult making a decent team for a hardcore nuzlocke would be! Yeah. All 3 Sinnoh starters have a lot that make them great. Torterra has great offences and bulk and a good move pool. Plus in terms of grass type competition, the only decent alternative is Roserade. But Roserade is a stone evo and doesn’t get good until it’s fully evolved and kitted out. Plus poison isn’t as great for offence as ground. Empoleon avoids the issues plaguing Blastoise and Feraligator by having the unique steel typing giving it an absurd amount of resistances and utility that something like Gyarrados can’t easily replicate. Like, it’s a water type you’d want to choose which alone makes it stand out in a world with Gyarados, Vaporeon and Lapras. It is held back by its low speed and rather average defences. Infernape is obviously S Tier.

As someone who uses samurott alot, one of its biggest advantages is his learnset. It has a priority move in aqua jet, set up move with sword dance, good coverage move in x-scissor (or ice beam if you're stupid enough to play it special) good stab move in early game, and waterfall in later game. It makes samurott go from mid to a genuine threat. Waterfall, x-scissor, aqua-jet and sword dance is an amazing set that you can get incredibly easily. It also learns most of those moves VERY EARLY. Also, there are no other good water types in unova aside from jellicent, which has a completely different utility, unlike emboar who can be replaced by darmanitan. Its bulk is enough to tank a few hits, and it has priority. To me, it should definitely be in A tier.

One thing in favor of Litten: picking it in sun and moon is the easiest way of dealing with that blasted Magnemite. Any other pick puts you too much at the mercy of rng and is a potential run killer. Popplio is weak to it, Rowlet is neutral but has no good offense, nothing you can catch at that point really helps ( and depending on how stringently you apply the rules, you might walk into that fight with just two mons, one of which will be your starter).

This is actually a really good point. That magnemite is one of the toughest things to deal with in Sun/Moon, especially with how limited the encounters are, and both Rowlet and Popplio are too slow and weak to effectively deal with it. Even if they survive (which is pretty hard with them since Magnemite would deal massive damage with thundershock and it outspeeds both), whoever left from the team after the Magnemite could very likely get defeated by Ilima I started with Rowlet and couldn't get past the magnemite since the only other thing I got was a Pikipek. Then I switched to Litten and after doing that I could continue the run

While it would take a long time, EV training Popplio in HP as much as you can allows for it to takes hits from magnemite relatively well and get a solid hit on it. From there, other team members should be able to wear it down and deal with it effectively.

I feel like Greninja's move pool was chosen based on two criteria: Being Ninja-like and giving him types to abuse Protean with. Unfortunately ninja moves aren't very hard hitting and Protean isn't available for Lockes. Meanwhile Cinderace gets less types to abuse Libero with but what they gave it actually has some impact to it. Gunk Shot and Iron Head are both solid enough moves, and its signature hits very hard.

I know right?! Serves Greninja right for always being #1. It always feels nice when underrated Pokémon like Chesnaught or Delphox can actually get the chance to shine and be above Greninja. I would've been fine for if they made the Kalos starters balanced with attention and how they work but they had to give it all to Greninja and only Greninja to the point to where anytime I see Greninja, I start to get upset/cringe knowing that the other Kalos starters are just forgotten. I mean, Greninja literally made a cameo in Pokémon Café Remix. The other starters probably would've worked better but no. Greninja. I don't want to hate Greninja and I'm not saying that my opinion is better then anyone else's. I just have dealt with this situation for years now and wish for there to be a change so Greninja can take a back seat for once and let the other Kalos starters or really any other Kalos Pokémon have the chance to shine.

My go to move set for Infernape has always been Thunderpunch, Earthquake, Flamethrower, and Machpunch/Close Combat. Covers 12 of the 17 types in Gen 4 and give him an expert belt and send it. However, Empoleon with 10 resistances + 1 immunity was always nice in my playthroughs too.

I would most agree with this tier list but I have one objection, greninja should be swapped with empoleon. Greninja has moves to cover most of its weaknesses, it takes super affective damage from 5 types. Bug, fighting, electric, grass and fairy. It cover 4 of its weaknesses with it WIDE move pool it can learn dig for electric types, acrobatics for bug types and fighting types and grass types and with protean this 110 base power move then becomes stab. Keep in mind that it also gets extrasensory for fighting types which goes very nice with its 103 special attack. With protean all of these moves become stab. It cannot cover its fairy weakness, however you only face fairy once in gen 6 and there are plenty of poison types you can get access to to deal with Valerie. Empoleon is the worst for its generation, the other 2 starters do very well against it and can destroy them because they both have access to high power stab super effective moves in earthquake for torterra and close combat for infernape . It covers 2 of the 3 weaknesses, However the moves it gets access to for the coverage are not stab. one of them is a physical move and the other is a special move. Electric types are very prominent in platinum and one of the final gym leaders has a jolteon and raichu. it cannot deal with some of the earliest gym leaders which matter more because of the limited team options. In my opinion greninja should have been bottom of s tier if not A tier. Its high speed and good coverage make it a good Pokémon. I mean I was surprised when you said its move coverage sucks. But this is just my opinion

I have a lot of thoughts on this particular topic lol - cool video I always feel like I overrate fire types in general, just because they show up so much later in the game than the grasses and waters - hard to replace. that said, I still think charizard might be rated too high even in C, it just makes the early game miserable - he hard loses to the first 3 gyms x.x love the man but the game does not I think venusaur is placed well, but calling it a slightly better meganium is wayyyy selling it short. grass/poison is such an excellent typing defensively and gives it a way to break through opposing grass pokemon offensively. it also has a base 100 spA which is respectable, you can't just ignore it like you can meganium. it more effectively soaks hits and actually dishes damage back between earthquake and special stab STAB, while meganium can't do anything with its 80s attacks. sceptile in sapphire in particular I think can be rated higher just because of the aqua matchups, cleanly sweeping every one of those fights is worth a lot imo. I'd say the same for pert in ruby but pert is insane anywhere. nice video, I like the reasoned takes on these mons

Something to keep in mind about Sceptile's learnset: in Gen 3, Leaf Blade was only 70 power, it wasn't until Gen 4 with the physical/special split that it went up to 90. But in the remakes, you can just wait to evolve Treecko until level 21, and it'll learn Giga Drain, which is 75 power in Gen 6 (or keep it until 37 to get Energy Ball, 90 power in that gen). Also, from Gen 5 on delaying a level evolution makes a Pokemon gain 20% extra experience, making it less of a grind to get there. While there aren't a ton of great fire-type matchups in Hoenn, I feel like Blaziken rates a bit better for them when you consider how slow most of the other fire-types are (Camerupt, Magcargo, Torkoal; Ninetails is faster, but doesn't hit as hard). Also, you really don't have a lot of options for Wattson's Magneton (Combusken or Makuhita for fighting; Marshtomp, Nincada's Mud Slap, and Geodude's Magnitude for ground; no other fire-types until after beating him). No contest though compared to Infernape having only *1* other fire-type alternative in D/P (and BDSP?) before the National Dex (Platinum's expanded Dex I think raises that to 4). Also, while I love Charizard, I think the ranking is fair, as it seems like Gen 1 more so than others was really designed around the type matchups of the starters, to make them an implicit difficulty selection: Bulbasaur does the best against the first 3 gyms, but is also the quickest to replace (Paras and version-exclusive Oddish/Bellsprout before the 2nd gym), while you have very few/no options to get another water/fire type until after the SS Anne and Rock Tunnel (Water Gun TM in Gen 1 Mt Moon, Magikarp just before entering the cave and Bubblebeam/Water Pulse TM from Misty are your other options for water before Surge). But, there aren't a lot of options for Fire or Grass overall (6 each, including Moltres, but vanilla version-exclusives reduces that by 1), while there are tons of water types once you get to the point of accessing them.

You’re spot on with the Venu explanation. The only encounter you might get to do decently well against Misty is Pikachu, but that’s a super rare encounter and you can’t bank on that. Even then it’s very frail and doesn’t resist water; it’s just super effective. Even past that it’s definitely one of the best grass types in the region, although there’s other bulky grass/poison status monsters in gen 1. It shouldn’t be that high on paper, but in context I’m almost surprised you didn’t put it higher. The only other thing I’d argue is putting swampert at the top of A. Everything you said is true, but there are alternative encounter routings you can do to make it work out. For example if you go blaziken, wingull or shroomish for Roxanne, then grab another ground type on your way you can trade some of your early game potency for much more lethality in the late game. Blaziken does really well in the Hoenn elite 4, especially in the remakes as it’s mega evolution let’s it passively stack speed and most of the elite 4 lead with their slower Pokémon. It won’t sweep Drake or the champion, but it destroys Sidney, Glacia, and does pretty well into phoebe. Great lists though, good information and explanations

A couple of counter points in regards to Swampert vs Blaziken (i love them both) 1. Torchic doesn't evolve in time for Roxanne's level cap of 15. (14 in oras) so you have to rely on the weaker "route 1" mons like lotad, wingul, and shroomish. (They aren't literally route 1 but you get my point, mudkip has better stats than them for this fight) 2. The Hoenn E4 can be soloed by a Linoone using bellydrum + return or shadowball (physical in gen 3). And the Emerald champion's water types also don't stand a chance against it. (It may even do ok into steven depending on what you teach it) 3. Timing is huge. Technically a whiscash can serve as your discount Swampert but you get it too late, barboach is after Roxanne and Watson, and Flannery's levelcap is 28 so you don't get to evolve whiscash until Norman. (At which point the need for that water/ground drops off until its time to icebeam some dragons) In contrast mudkip is with you from the beginning to help with all of your threats. 4. This is more of a general argument in favor of starters over their alternatives. Starters generally have good base stats. Sure a Bellsprout -> Victreebell or Odish -> Vileplume are technically equivalent to Bulbasaur -> Venusaur in terms of typing/moves a Venusaur is simple stronger than the other 2. (And is available in time for Brock, but onix hits like a wet noodle so less of a problem than Roxanne or Watson) All of that said, I'm still picking my favorite and ignoring the "theoretical most optimal pick".

I do like Meganium in HGSS for early Swords Dance, Sub, and Synthesis. It can brute force basically every fight with that, and you'll probably get a Geodude for the first two gyms anyways.

Gonna have to add two things here. First, there are grass moves in Hoenn apart from your rival for Swampert to worry about. Tate and Liza, Sydney, and Steven all do. In ORAS, Glacia is also packing freeze dry which will hit 4x effective against Swampert. Swampert is my favourite starter but there are still pokemon to be worried about even if it’s only like 6 in the whole game. Second, Rillaboom is criminally underrated because as a Grookey, it can 2HKO level 30 palpitoads before the first gym. There is no easier starter to grind your team with. I think that only merits one tier higher though since without grinding, it’s not terribly great like Cinderace.

I'm running Crystal with extra rules (see the Super Naturelocke and the Lorelocke rulesets, they hybridize amazingly and somehow help me NOT eat chicken sandwich mid-game.) The Lorelocke rules assign a particular trait based on mythology or other lore related to the Pokemon's design, from a standard rulebook provided, from a pool of 3-5 rules for each line. I rolled up lorerules for each of the Johto starters, and ultimately I was pushed into taking Chikorita based on them. -Cyndaquil had *Descendant of Typhon,* which had to have every move be a different type, stay in battle for two consecutive turns every time it came out, and being hit by a single Electric-type attack would knock it out of battle and then kill it once the battle ended. Kind of ridiculous. There's not a lot of Electric coverage on opponents in GSC but I don't know who DOES have it yet, so I wasn't comfortable taking the best on-paper option. -Totodile had *Zipacna,* which required it to have a Water-move and a Ground-move minimum in its moveset, and every level divisible by 10 it would demand food to the tune of 15k Poken/dollars OR one non-Steel-type Pokemon to eat. Since I'd be raising it from level 5, it would hit every single possible mealtime and that was way too expensive for my reckoning. -Chikorita had *Laurel Wreath,* which marked it as a Royal Pokemon for other relevant rules, and required it to lead the battle for every important battle (Rivals, Gym Leaders, Rocket Bosses, E4/Champ.) This was the mildest rule in terms of requirements, and I figured I needed all the help I could get, considering I have a horrendous track record for Nuzlockes (mostly thanks to chicken sandwich tbh) and had no faith I could juggle a difficult starter on my very first complex combo-ruleset run. So far, the party has beaten Jasmine, and I have zero deaths. Chikorita/Bayleef has been a rock-steady centerpiece in the team, using the opening turn to poison enemies or bait a move another teammate resists. Turns out all I needed was to pay better attention, but the extra rules help reduce boredom in the long stretches of nothing-doing. I agree that Chikorita is probably an F-tier starter in its home games, but that does not mean it is a bad choice in the long run.

So I wasn't sure where to ask this, but since you've ranked all sorts of things for their value in nuzlockes I was wondering if you would ever do ranking video series for moves in nuzlockes? I say series cuz there's just so many moves that I would assume you would want to break them up into a handful of types per video. Anyways, I was just thinking about it like if you were to get an encounter that maybe sucks at first glance, but then you think about the fact that it has access to a specific move that is particularly helpful in such a way that makes the encouter not that bad after all. Like if you're doing a randomized run having a pokemon with access to dragon tail as your lead can be very helpful in the event that you run into a wobbuffet since it will force the wobbuffet to go first making its moves useless. But this example is also highly dependant on being either in a randomizer nuzlocke, or being in a game where you might be guaranteed to run into a trainer that has a wobbuffet. Anyways, sorry for the long post. TL;DR Will you make a video series about the usefulness of specific pokemon moves in nuzlockes?

Having played through a sword nuzlocke with Cinderace, I can confirm that its an incredible pokemon. Level 36 pyro ball is awesome, bulk isn't great but is honestly better than you'd expect for a fast fire type, along with some decent utility moves in u-turn and flame charge. Ok, honestly its mostly pyro ball, but a bp 120 stab fire move with zero drawbacks from a base 116 attack stat is insane. It just kills everything.

Steel is normally inning, but there are 2 magnemites so I count it as neutral. Typhlosion 1 losing, 4 neutral and 3 winning. Just looking at how good the starter mon are it's already fire > water > grass and on top of that same order applies to how easy you can do the gyms.
