This will be my practice tomorrow. I will let you know how I get on. One question I have is - what should initiate the bow movement, what feel should I try to imagine? For example is it the elbow, wrist or fingers that start the movement? Thank you for these lessons. They are just what I need to get me started. I hope you remain well.

Really happy to have found this. Once upon a time I played well enough to be first chair second violin in high school. (I chose to stay in second violin because I have always enjoyed playing harmony.) Unfortunately I lost my violin in a burglary many years ago. I purchased a new one a few years ago, but rarely play because my technique and intonation is so off from lack of practice and I didn't know how to get it back (which put me off practicing!) Now a few more years passed, and I found a poor broken violin in an antique shop and purchased it because it was so interesting and unique. I didn't know if it could ever be made whole again, but a friend took it to a luthier friend of hers, and I just recently got it back. It's not only playable but it has a beautiful sound and I'm inspired to play it. So here I am, starting at the beginning in order to relearn proper technique which will hopefully improve my muscle memory and intonation. Two lessons in and I already feel like my bowing is stronger. Thank you.

I also was first chair and played in a regional orchestra. Out of frustration, from years of not playing, and feeling I was terrible at it, I gave my violin to a friend for her daughter to use at school. I recently got it back and am trying to get back to playing the way I used to. I'm new to my 're-learning' journey. I hope yours has gone well!

This is brilliant...I’m also a Suzuki (piano & recorder) teacher. I’m doing Captain Tom’s 100 Challenge...recording 100 pieces from the repertoire of 9 Suzuki instruments. I’m only really competent on these 2 instruments so it is a big challenge for me. I know how many hours are really needed to learn an instrument so I have to condense this process in order to do the recordings. I did sit in on my children’s violin lessons many years ago and I did have a go but could never control the bow very well. This is so helpful. I may not get further than the Twinkles in the recordings as the violin needs much more than I can give at this time.

Hi Henriette, I practiced day 1 and 2, I practiced for almost an hour and a half. Firstly I know I’m using muscles I have not used before! Positive points - my bow hold feels comfortable and relaxed. At times I felt that I might be holding too lightly. Is it ok for the pinkie to lift off slightly at full extension bowing at the tip of the bow? Or should I try to bend my fingers and stretch them out so the pinkie stays in place? It isn’t waving in the air but feels really light playing at the tip. I also made some nice sounds! I found the push forward tip really helped to keep the bow on line. When I was doing the elbow raising and lowering exercise I made scratchy sounds as the bow was sliding about! Definite doom for improvement. Oh and my strings seem to go out of tune quite quickly but they are brand new strings is this to be expected? All in all I really enjoyed the lesson and made nicer sounds than I expected to. I hope your well and thank you so much 😊
@violinclasses4 жыл бұрын
Hi, glad you enjoyed the lesson and got on so well. Pinky should be light on the bow when you play at the point, but not come off completely. New strings always stretch a little so tune frequently if you can. Have you found my how to tune a violin video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHnWq5-MoK2lbMk

What does it mean. I rosin the bow and still have blank spots on the bow. How can I fix this? Thank you in advance.
@violinclasses2 жыл бұрын
Hi Derrick, thanks for your message. It is tricky to say from a distance what might cause this. All I can suggest is to keep going over those slippery spots with more rosin, really pressing firmly. You might try a softer rosin, Pirastro Gold for instance, which may be slightly more powdery.

@violinclasses4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question, I am not doing anything in particular with my index finger of my right hand. I am trying to have it as loose as I can, so it does move a little with my other fingers. It should be as flexible as much as possible at this stage.

Any suggestions on how I can stop my pinky from coming off when I'm playing full bow? When my bow gets to the very tip, I find my pinky just doesn't stay on.
@violinclasses4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mariyam that happens in many people. It’s not the end of the world at this stage, but if you can ‘lean’ the hand ‘supinate’ towards your pinky, it may be easier to keep it on. The pinky does not do too much when you are playing at the point of the bow, but when you become more advanced, you will need to use your little finger, so it is a good habit to keep it on the bow if possible. Check out my Virtual violin practice playalong course in the next few days and I will show you . All the best from the UK!
