I grew up coon hunting and have had this exact meal many times! Thanks for sharing this video, I'm sure lots of people had no idea they could eat a coon. Kids are spoiled today, they turn their noses up to anything not fast food. We didn't have fast food as a kid, we hunted and raised our food, any dinner out was indeed a special occasion. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the video! This really brings back memories! My father used to go hunting in the mornings before he went to work and had my mother whatever he got, and she would clean it. My job was to hold the feet while she cleaned it. She used to cut the raccoons into pieces, flour and fry them like chicken. Good stuff! Thanks for the memories.

When I was a kid in school, my brother and I use to catch Racoons on weekends for extra money and food. Back before 1980 you could easy get $20.00 for a Coon Hide. sometimes we ate the meat when we had too, but most of the time we sold it.

Ymmmm....coon for supper! First time i heard of this, my mom got to tellin' me back in my teens what life was like on the farm(bay city, tx.), most fruits, veggies, livestock and wild game complemented what wasn't available like flour, sugar, coffee, etc. and amongst the wild game she prepared was 'possum, bullfrog legs, wild ducks and catfish, them big channel cats, but never mentioned anything about coons or as we know 'em over here, mapaches. thumbs up jnull0 and thankin' Mrs. V for sharin' on G+!! =)

John , since raccoons are always trying to kill and eat my chickens , I have no problem trapping and killing them . I do sell the skins , I boil them , mix the meat with rice and gravy , and my dogs love it . Same with turtles , I don't eat them , but my dogs and cats love the meat .

you know i love what the good lord provides, and as growing up with the elders in the back woods, i have grown to realize many things, as i was told, always bless your catch after you shoot it, and before its cleaned. but everything from rabbit, opossum, squirrel, snake, turtle, deer, pheasant, duck, goose, fish, wild hog, its provided on earth as edible....... just finding and learning the old method as i call it, is a lot safer than the new. but you just made it a lot easier for me and thank you much now i can put coon on my plate and enjoy another new food cant wait ............. thanks again

Great video! It took a lot of courage to do this one seeing that most people will turn their nose up at it and judge. I for one love coon meat and will eat it any time opportunity allows. Last year 2 of them helped themselves to my corn plants and destroyed my small crop. They also helped themselves to a couple of my chickens. I set live traps and caught both of the little buggers and they became dinner for 9. I think it tastes like dark meat chicken and I love it. I did mine a little different though. I cut it up soaked it in salt water then I boiled it for about 20 minutes or so then breaded and finished it in the frying pan. So tasty.

+Paula Mitchell sounds cool. im 16 and really want to start trying animals that people normally wouldn't eat like coon, porkupine, crow and coyote but theres no way my parents would let me. Also I've shot a coon once and it smelt so bad, idk if there all like that but it kinda turns me off. I shot one last year but didn't get to close to it so im not sure if it smelt or not

They do, but in the winter when it is very cold, the sick animals will usually die from the cold. I also check the liver, heart, and lungs for spots that would indicate sickness. As for the hide, a night outside below freezing will take care of any fleas or mites on the hide. Thanks for watching, J
