The kids have come from all over the state to bowl in this week's PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR event, as we have visitors from as far away as Columbus and Augusta, as well as a couple of locals from Stars and Strikes and our first visitor from Brunswick Zone Lilburn. And one of our visitors has made the stepladder finals. The kids bowled three games of qualifying, throwing out their low game, just to get here. Now, let's see which one can get to the finish line and put their name on The Coveted Trophy Pin.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: PRODIGY WILL BE OFF NEXT WEEK, as our league will not be bowling on April 8th because most of our kids will be in Columbus, GA bowling in the Georgia State Pepsi Tournament. Plus, our bowling center is booked the weekend of April 15th, so our kids will be off that day, too. (There is a chance I may try to find an alternate location to film a PRODIGY show on the 15th, but can't promise it at this time.) So this could be our last PRODIGY episode until our likely next taping on April 22nd. Coach Randy has the play-by-play call.

Hi Coach Randy! I know I've said it before, but this show is awesome!!! I am a jr. bowler myself and have improved a lot over this past year. In fact last week I went to my second tournament. At that tournament I got first place with a series of 552 and won a $160 scholarship. I miss watching Logan, I hope he can get back in as soon as he can. Have a wonderful day. Thank you.

Good luck to the bowlers here in Pepsi. I just came back from mine here in Florida, capped it off with a 277 (Had the front 9, then a 9-spare and 8 in the 10th), got an ovation for that (Was my new high game too). That + earlier games totaled 1,258, good enough to place at 9th in U20 Boys Scratch for at least that night 'til the next squads. Would've placed 1st in U20 Girls Scratch if I was a girl. I expect at least one of them to kick butt in Georgia, I'll be keeping an eye on the results.

It would be cool if you set up some sort of prodigy tournament inviting all the kids in your area and held a full on tournament with qualifying and matchplay with bonus pins and everything I think that would be really awesome. Good work on the shows I really enjoy watching them :)

Tanner, I **so** want to do that. What I **really** want to do is hold a weekend tournament that mimics the old PBA Regional format that was in use when I was PBA back in the day. Great format. Mixes qualifying games and head-to-head match play, the best form of bowling there is.

Hmm, It would be interesting to see a format where brooklyn strikes were penalized as an open or gutter ball; and pocket strikes are just that, a strike in the frame? I understand in bowling, you take what you can get, and if you can get a brooklyn strike, you take it. But, playing short patterns so deep inside, and praying for the brooklyns so as to not have to play down by the gutter....This would be interesting to see as I believe it would force the lane / pattern to be played the way it's intended; and would force adjustments to play a line that's going to put them in the pocket or the correct side of the pins. Sort of like the sudden death no tap bowling format where strikes are 0 and 9s are strikes.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
Amanda Mayer - Ah yes, the "Suicide No Tap." The kids hated that, so you can believe that I will bring it back. LOL! I'm cooking up a format where we set an alarm clock during the qualifying round. When it goes off, the two players that are up will throw one ball. If one of them knocks down fewer pins, they're eliminated. Talk about a pressure shot!
@kyahrose5261
@kyahrose5261 7 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that would be pressure. Pressure during the shot, and pressure leading up to the shot wondering if they will be the ones up or not when the alarm goes off....Like playing musical chairs in bowling. That will be interesting to see. But yeah, watching this episode had me thinking of what pressure methods / rules could be made to pressure them to make choices and adjustments to keep them on the proper side of the pins and not be thankful for a cross over strike. Whereas, I understand it has to be taken, and one can be grateful for the lucky hit. But shouldnt see an effort to try playing for brooklyn strikes if it can be helped. Thats why I was thinking a pressure format that would penalize brooklyn strikes might be interesting to see? Maybe count the brooklyn strike as a gutter ball, and throw the second ball for fill (spare or pin count?) In this sense it would be similar to how the 9 pin suicide match is scored, so probably just as much hated? Not that Im trying to devise things that they will hate, just looking at ways of getting more shot pressure as well.

I'll ask around and see if any coaches at any of the neighboring bowling centers would like to host an episode of PRODIGY for their kids to star in it. (Unlikely our kids would go there, but some might; you never know.) I've been wanting to "take the show on the road" for a while, so this seems like a good opportunity to do just that. But I've first got to find someone who'd be interested in hosting the show for a week. Something tells me I shouldn't have that much difficulty locating a willing participant.

(Signing the pin. How you've coached some of the bowlers to fix some things. How Charlie has grown as a bowler. How Logan has transformed. How Christian is starting to heed some of the advice that is working. Your understanding of the sport and the kids bowling so that the commentating is always presented with passion...- the list goes on and on.) Keep up the great work.

Haven't completely decided what we're going to do for Summer league this year. Last year I organized an 8 week Summer camp that included a 4-week spare shooting clinic. Not sure if we'll repeat that. What I do know is that some of our better bowlers usually lay out during the Summer. So I haven't decided quite what to do with Prodigy for the Summer. Still looking at a few options. Trust me. I'll let you know the moment I decide.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
Great question. For starters, I ask the guy at the counter to turn the damn music OFF. On this day, we were just about the only customers they had, and we certainly didn't want the music. So they kindly obliged. Sometimes if I can just get 'em to turn it DOWN, that's usually good enough. If KZbin issues a copyright claim, I'll usually challenge it. If the music is ambient room noise, mixed in with pins crashing and me talking all over it, NOBODY, I mean N-O-B-O-D-Y is going to turn to this channel and this video just to hear their damn song. They'll go somewhere that the song plays in the clear. Not much I can do about it. Besides, I'm talking all over it.

Well, as I've mentioned to others in the past, you could always consider running away from home and living in a box out in the parking lot at Brunswick Zone Roswell, where we film these shows. I can't say for sure that the management of the bowling center won't mind, but I can't see why they would. Then again, I must warn you, it gets cold in the winter and very warm and steamy in the summer outdoors here. So you should plan accordingly. Perhaps your better bet would be to stay where you are and enjoy PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR from the comfort of your home where you can pour yourself a soft drink and sit back and enjoy the action on your computer screen or smart device. :-)

If Bryant is U12, Does that mean he would be a JV player?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
Bowling Blaziken ! - First of all, I may have gotten his age wrong. Since recording this show, I've been told that he actually turned 12 a few months ago. Not sure. I'll confirm next time I see him and his dad. That said, the dividing line between our Varsity and Junior Varsity leagues has very little to do with U12 or other USBC-defined age divisions. By necessity, it's more a function of dividing the kids into groups so that we can fill out a requisite number of teams to make a viable league. Our Varsity league has about 7 teams (3 members), and the JV has four teams (one or two teams have 4 members, while the others carry a Vacant). If Bryant was bowling with us, regardless if his age, I would be inclined to put him in the Varsity, where he would have some competition (another consideration used when placing a kid).

+Game Master - One of the misunderstandings about league bowling is, you don't have to be good at bowling to be able to bowl in a league. Part of the reason you join a league is so you can get better at it. Especially when you're a junior bowler. By joining a league, you get to be coached, and therefore you learn the fundamentals.

Gotta be careful about judging others. Bryant is 11. I don't know how long he's been bowling, but his style would indicate to me that he's no beginner. He's likely been bowling a few years. That means he started when he was pretty little (he's not that big now). Ask any of us who coach kids -- we see this sort of thing all the time, where a kid has developed a mannerism or a habit that can be traced back to when they were much smaller and struggling to get much momentum on the heavy ball. I suspect this problem in Bryant's game (which I spotted immediately, but didn't comment on in the show) is something he'll work through as his body gets bigger and stronger. You're right, he does tend to swing the ball "around" his body. But that's how he's generating the revs and power he gets. He'll have to work this out as he grows. But knowing the caliber of coaching he has over at BZ Lilburn and the strength of the field he's bowling against over there, I have no doubt he will work through it.

Maybe. He kept throwing quality shots right 'til the end, though. So I'm not so sure he was "nervous." The big mistake was the whiffed 1-3-6-10 and the missed 7 pin. With kids, it always seems to come down to spares.

Why so late? Well, as I mentioned on the show, we got started taping much later in the day than usual, which meant we finished much later in the afternoon than usual. Bottom line: When I got home with the footage, I usually sit down and start working on it Saturday afternoon/evening. But on this day, I was so tired when I got hom on Saturday, I didn't do a thing with the footage until I sat down to start editing the show on Sunday morning. It took the better part of 14 hours (I'm getting much faster at it) to put it all together. But that meant it wasn't ready for uploading to KZbin until about 1 AM Eastern Time. Sorry it took so long. But just so you know, these shows don't have a firm time/date when they go up. They go up when I finish them. Sometimes that's Sunday evening. Sometimes that's Monday. The shows won't be uploaded until they're finished, and there are a lot of factors that affect when that will be.

In each state, there are qualifying tournaments where spots into Junior Gold Nationals are awarded. Here in Georgia, we're blessed to have one of the most active associations, Georgia Youth Bowlers Tour (GYBT), which stages an even every month (first Sunday of the month). These events are at a different bowling center each month. You enter in your age group (which requires both a Standard Youth Membership to USBC *and* a Junior Gold upgrade membership). If you bowl well enough (scratch) against the bowlers in your age group to win a spot in Junior Gold nationals, then you're in. All you have to do then is get your butt to Cleveland for the tournament this Summer.

He missed making the show this week by 8 pins. Then, the very next day (April 2nd), Logan *WON* the U15 Boys Division in the monthly Georgia Youth Bowlers Tour (GYBT) event (Junior Gold qualifier), fending off Charlie and all the other top U15 Boys who were there. I'd say Logan has battled back out of his slump, and I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing him on the show again soon.

Did Bryant and his team make it to the finals in Junior Gold this year?

End3r Plays - If you're talking TEAM, you must mean USA Bowling, which is the Baker-style team championship that is held alongside Junior Gold (but is a separate event). Snd yes, his team not only made the bracketed match play round, but they advanced to the championship match which was televised by CBS Sports Network last Tuesday. Set your DVR; it'll replay this Tuesday from 12 Noon to 1:30 PM Eastern Time on CBS Sports Network. It may be the last time it airs, although I believe the whole telecast is now up on KZbin. The team consisted of James Armedariz, Riley Stewart (who's been on PRODIGY -- check the Team Showdown episode), Bryant Griffith, and Jacob Ballenger.

Bryant's team won USA Bowling U12 last year. They finished 2nd this year. And Bryant bowled great this year. He was the steadiest of the team's bowlers on the TV show this year. Again, it'll be on CBS Sports Network Tuesday at Noon Eastern Time if you want to watch it again.
