The kind of advice that you give is essentially gold for a young designer (any designer, for that matter). Not only do you give great "rule-of-thumb" tips on vehicle proportions, shading, light sources, reflections, wheel ellipses, etc., but you ALSO give valuable conceptual advice on designing for the future, and design emotion/character. Both are equally important, and you're one of the only people that I have seen explain it so well and concisely. I'm a 27yo mechanical engineer with aspirations of designing. I've been drawing every waking moment of my existence since I was 3, and I still learn something new every time I watch these videos. Well done, sir!

Hey Frank! I have two ideas for content: I: How about making a series about important designers/studios? For example to have a look at some typical designs from Bertone (or Gandini) , Fisker, Pininfarina or who ever you think is / has been important. Show us if there are ways we can spot a Gandini design etc. II: This is just for one episode, but explain how the design process for a new car works, who does the painting? how many are they? what does the head of design do? could a "bad" design be "talked" its way through the management? does it exist reference groups that will get to see the car and say anything about it? (the latter questions is a bit to understand how, for example, BMW can have stepped so wrong in their later designs). Best regards.

The design by the 6 year old was excellent for that age, wouldn't want to compare it to my drawings when I was 6. And it was equally impressive what Frank made out of the drawing, I learned so much in these few minutes! I'm not a designer and not aspiring to ever become one but how Frank explained a few key principles how to improve the sketches was just on point. Not surprising - everybody knows he is one of the greatest car designers ever - but simply insightful and inspiring. Thanks a lot!

The WilsonWilbert sketch I can see the Mercedes, the grille particularly in the upper corners has some 2014 C class coupe vibes. But what really drew my eye were the headlights. They remind me of the first gen Kia k900; I always found those pods with the ice cube lights so neat.

I would love to see Frank redesign his past cars; well, more like remaster them because they really don’t need much as that most of them look still modern to this day; they are very timeless. But take into consideration modern technology such as lights, vents, etc… that were not available when they were originally made. Personally, I would appreciate seeing one done with the F430, as I think that it is truly one of the best looking Ferraris out there.

I wish you would be able to put together an entire series of how to design a car. From the very basic. I think this will help all of us learn and to practice. When I was in my teens, I had a desire to become a designer. However my natural talent wasn't too good. Although I was fortunate to have a drafting teacher to allow me to do drawings of cars, he even suggested that I explore going to the Art Center College of Design. I never did. However, I think a series of how to design from you will help inspire and give hope to those young people who have the fire in them but need some guidance.

Thanks for doing this Frank. If your channel existed in the 90s, I would've grown up a car designer. As a kid I used to draw all kinds of cars and I could sketch a Diablo from memory. A few times I even sent my designs to manufacturers. My mom thinks they looked like what cars look like today with the double headlights and oversized grilles (no, even I wasn't as crazy as BMW though). But I never found any guidance or training and I wasn't much of an artist outside of cars, so I eventually dropped it. At that time, if I could've had my design critiqued by Frank Stephenson, it would've literally meant the world for me.

I was wondering about whether there are designers that are actually bad at sketching ? It seems to me that these days you can use computer software and move around all elements of the design until you get something that is consistent with your vision. You could even have the computer check it against design rules such as having appropriate space for suspension travel or an adequate ramp angle. Would it suck the soul out of design ?
