I'm a huge fanboy of Ace Attorney, so of course a video on this game was going to happen! After being hyped up for nearly four years, let's see if it lives up to all the expectations.

The ending was kind of crazy, but not as crazy as a middle-aged man disguised a teenage girl or a guy who built an entire London underground. Once you play Professor Layton, nothing phases you anymore.

I think this game honestly is a good entry into both series, as the puzzles aren't as many as a full on Prof Layton game and the courts aren't as difficult thanks to hint coins giving you a good idea as to what to look at rather than just pointing you just at the answer all the time. Both ways ease you into your respective franchise of choice, preparing you for the harder stuff that both series may have to offer. And Hell, for both cast, you get no spoilers to any of the other games. You're aware of the star characters of either franchise, you get a brief history as to who they are, but you go no further. You don't need to play any other games from either Franchise to understand this game. You can just pick it up and go. Tldr, good game for beginners of both series. Also yes I'm replying to what video over 7 years old? I know, I'm just starting the game up again and found this in my recommended, it's fine.

Crossovers are always some of the most exciting parts of the gaming industry. Especially when it's combining two careers as exciting as an attorney and an architect. Sounds a lot weirder when you say it out loud. I'm curious though. What franchise were you exposed to first? Professor Layton or Ace Attorney? Or neither and you're using this crossover as your gateway to both!

Ace Attorney definitley, I've only played 1/4 of the first Professor Layton game before playing this one, but it was least enough for me to get familar with the puzzles in this crossover

I bought Professor Layton and the Curious Village first. I loved it, but I was too stupid to complete all of the puzzles when I first got it, but I loved it. The story, characters and music were so memorable to me that I immediately went out and bought the rest of the games.

I know I'm rather late to the conversation, but after years of avoiding talk about this game I finally got my hands on it, played it through and wanna add my 2 cents :D First of all, great review! Like you, I've played all the games in both series up and down and as a fan of both was not disappointed - awesome crossover!! This game made me laugh so much with unexpected references and being silly while playing the jokes absolutely straight, like the scene where all the main characters meet, omg XD I really like how the game developers incorporated certain gameplay aspects of each game as the default, eg the dialogue style of the characters was all Phoenix Wright and I loved every moment of it. The new feature of having mutliple witnesses at the stand simultaneously was hilarious and the witness characters themselves were great and fun to interact with. I loved the environment setting of a medieval town and like you think it's quite brilliant and absolutely perfect for a crossover between these two franchises. The story was a typical (but thematically much darker) Layton mystery and did not disappoint with its plot twists. Cut scenes, spoken dialogue etc. - all excellent. There were however a few little bits and pieces in the Layton gameplay that I didn't really like, eg the walking map where you can see exactly how many hint coins and puzzles there are to solve as well as the shiny magnifying glass that indicates the coins... I found myself not clicking on stuff and enjoying the little comments you get from the characters as I usually do with Layton (and Wright) games, but just looking for dem coins and hidden puzzles. It was a lot like Layton's Mystery Journey, a game I detest from beginning to finish. All the characters who appeared in court at one point or the other were fleshed out nicely, but the rest of the townspeople were kinda boring, with a few exceptions, eg the librarian. I can't even remember most of them. This is probably bc the typical exploration aspect of the Layton games (one of my favourite) is absent, where you're required to go through most map points several times through-out the game and talk to people. I think it could have been cool to meet the people from court more often around town, as well as have more familiar characters from both franchises eg Chelmey or Gumshoe. But the latter is a minor complaint, I really enjoyed every interaction between the four main protagonists and got my full share of fan service there :) I all in all got the feeling that game development focused perhaps more on the Wright aspect of the game (which was absolutely fantastic) and not so much on the Layton side, eg the puzzles themselves. While I enjoyed most of them, not one of them was really a headscratcher for too long. I felt like the amount of picarats did not always indicate their difficulty level, I solved a 70 one almost by accident, sth that you usually don't get in Layton games. Also that the signiture tower exploration of all Layton games was basically just the same puzzle over and over till you reach the top was disappointing. The puzzle instructions in general were worded sometimes a little sloppily, leaving things open for interpretation, and the puzzles for solving key moments in the story weren't as well worked out as in usual Layton games, which again, reminds me a lot of Mystery Journey... I also missed having minigames like the parrot delivery service or the train routes. BUT, having said all that, I did really, REALLY like this game A LOT and am certainly gonna play it through again and again for years to come. If there ever is a continuation to this crossover, I'm there, baby!! I love these franchises to bits and seeing these favourite videogame characters of mine interact is simply amazing. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you're a fan of either: Wright fans get awesome courtroom chapters with new and fun game features and as always hilarious dialogue, especially when you mess up. Layton fans get a typically amazing mystery with crazy plot twists you don't see coming. The darker tone also makes for a very novel playing experience, with there being some very dark topics for a Layton game indeed. Even if the puzzle department falls short in my opinion, I promise, the rest makes up for it :)

hmmm interesting review. As a hardcore fan of both series I can honestly say this game plays out much better as a Layton game than an ace attorney game, it almost forgets it's an ace attorney game, with the soundtrack and story. Also chapter 4 was moving but nowhere near as epic as previous installments cases. I also personally liked the prologue case the best. I personally think there might be a personal bias with this game because your such a fan, but what you said still makes lots of sense. Good review anthony

Funny you should say it plays better as an AA than Layton game, I actually felt like it was the other way round :D The courtroom got most of the game time and the best new features. The story is very Layton, but regarding the gameplay I feel it focused more on developing the Wright side.

If i remember correctly, you just see some explosions around the city, not deaths. Game never clearly showed the deaths. I think ant is right in this one, especially what happens to maya on case 3. It is brutal, because they show it clearly

I'll have to disagree on the voice acting for Maya, she's not bad, but she just doesn't fit Maya well, the actor sounds a bit too mature for Maya and there seems to be times where the actor feels emotionless, it's a bit of a disappointment, but still, it's great to FINALLY see Maya again:D

I loved it, having played near all of the ace attorney (without Dual Destinies and edgys 2nd game (need to get it patched) and all of Layton 1-6 with the possible of FTP layton bros being more AA than layton. I am sure Lv 5 and Capcom had many ideas for settings should They do another "please do"

Got this game a few days after beating Dual Destinies and I feel that the court cases were handled a lot better in Duel Destines. The characters were better, the animation was definitely better, and I just got more enjoyment in Dual Destinies. At least the Layton part of the game is still as fun as any other Layton game I've played.

I'd have to agree. The game was really really good (except Espella) until the end. The ending of this game was just...STUPID. And that really bums me out. There are a few things too that bothered me, like why was Espella so useless, or why didn't Maya do any spirit channeling when Luke got to use his special talent? The game was good but sometimes it felt like they missed some good opportunities. And they made Layton look like a saint while Nick was kinda left in the dust :/ But I still really liked it... Now if only the ending didn't suck horribly.

Blame the ending on the Layton series all you want but the truth is that the Layton series brought the awesome twist and the Pheonix Wright series brought the plot holes. Plus when aside from the plot holes this ending was pretty good.

Ugh gosh this game. As someone who has played both series (well all of Ace Attorney, 4/6+movie for Layton), I didn't really like this game. The puzzles were all a joke and those are the only part I like about Layton, so I didn't have much to enjoy out of that side of things. There are a few cool moments here and there and they do a good job of blending the cinematography styles and the trial characters are fun, but the multiple witness gimmick feels forced and never gets any more complex, Barnham only gets cool at the end and they don't do anything with it, the investigations control like total ass and the game overall just felt like busy work. It's a good entry point I think but it shouldn't stand up as high as either series does in its individual games. Also maybe it's just me but for some reason the lip synching is so off that it really bothers me. Whenever there was a voiced section I was totally taken out of it because of how off the voices were. Maya's especially since the audio didn't really feel balanced well for her recordings.

As a first experience to both series, I think I should play Phoenix Wright someday. And never touch Professor Layton ever. Seriously, this is one of the worst games I've ever played because of the puzzles. I think it may be because I'm not a puzzle game player, but I think that the puzzles were very hard and I had to use hint coins on every single one. Eventually I ran out and made the game a chore to play. But I kept going for about 10 hours straight when I first got the game because I thought just maybe that it would get better, and it did. For about 30 minutes. The trials in this game are easily the best part. But as for the puzzles, I'm either never playing another Layton game, or I need to get better at puzzle games. Either way, with all the hype I built for it, it was very disappointing.
