The vampire and the mage are implied to escape the first fight (turning into a bat and teleporting respectively), hence why you fight them again but not the other bosses. Due to the terrible graphics I only notices this on my second play-through.

Hydlide first came out in Japan in 1984. There was no North American version until 1989, by which point there were buckets of superior games to compare it to, notably The Legend of Zelda (1986). But it was an innovative game when it first came out. Prominent releases from 1984 were games like Tetris, Duck Hunt, Paperboy, Marble Madness and Excitebike-there were few RPG games at the time, and close to zero action RPGs. Of course The Legend of Zelda made Hydlide look like hot trash, but for more than a year, in Japan, Hydlide was legitimately the most interesting game of its kind. Games were primitive, especially before the NES-keep in mind that in North America, Pac-Man was still a top-seller as late as 1982!

ALSO! Hydlide is called a Hit on the back because when it was released in Japan(1984), it was actually really inovative. Its a cult classic in japan, which is why it spawned 2 sequels, a remake and COUNTLESS remasters

How can you make an RPG where the combat is pointless? The Witcher games don't give you much xp for killing random monsters, but at least quests give huge xp and item rewards and the combat is generally enjoyable. This game's combat is like getting your nails pulled and it's worthless to boot? I actually had a friend that had odly generous memories of this game from when he was 6. I showed him this video and almost felt sorry for the shattering of rose-tinted glasses that occured.
