So, I thought I'd clear some of the plot up. Starting with... The crystal is something from the second game, Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness. It's called the Evil Crystal (It gets worse), hidden deep underground, creating monsters. So basically, it's a monster spawner. You are summoned to- if I remember correctly- The Land of Fairies, so you can kill the monsters and break the crystal. Varalys also appears there, also downgraded there to being the guard of the crystal. Hydlide 3: Visitors of Darkness, or The Space Memories (No, I didn't make a mistake and forget to use roman numerals, that was done intentionally. No, really.) takes place after that. Hydlide 3:VoD/tSM (Acronyms are dumb) also takes place in The Land of Fairies. After the crystal broke, monsters disappeared, and things were peaceful. Technologies advanced. Kingdoms were built. Eventually, it became more like the human world Hydlide II: SoD's protagonist came from. The fairies, and The Fairy, left that world for... some reason. The rest is history. So yeah, it's all bullsh- Extra, Gameplay: Hydlide II's gameplay is the midpoint between Hydlide I and Hydlide 3. It has the time, equipment and morality systems (among others) this game has, but not the hunger, sleepy, and weight systems (again, among others). Leveling only increased HP, and you had to get Attack and Magic through training, which is something you buy. Over all, It's mostly the same as Hydlide I, but different in some places. Extra, Kaizack's Stupid Cutscene, and the Ending: So, I think what he was trying to say was that while his body would die, he would still exist forever, either as a spirit, Part of the protag, or in some non-literal way. The world destroys itself as he said it would, but the protag's existence and willpower bring it back. This does make some sense, they do have power on the level of Kaizack. And that's it. The End. The Story of Hydlide is- Oh right, Virtual Hydlide. It's just a remake, from what I can tell.

I could immediately tell ProJared switched to emulation (outside of him announcing he did, of course) because suddenly the pixels on-screen were sharp and crisp, and the text was made legible! I was wondering why his recordings of old games looked so blurry until I realized now that through recording off of the original console, his resolutions are severely limited. So it's cool that he does indeed play on the original console.

Japanese circles loved them. Mind you, the came out in the west significantly later than their Japanese release dates. Hydlide released in Japan originally in 1984, and in the west on NES in 1989 (Europe got the MSX2 version in 1985). Super Hydlide originally released in 1987 (yes, Hydlide 3 was already out in Japan before Hydlide 1 came out in the west) and the west didn't get it until 1990. Virtual Hydlide, on the other hand, released worldwide on April 1995. Considering it's the LAST ONE, and it was BAD, it's safe to assume everyone hated it and it killed the series.

You mention the character being too stupid to read in the graveyard portion, which makes me think of the old Fallout games. It's possible to make a character with such low intelligence that you can't communicate with anyone, it's hilarious. Not this, though. This just turns that into pointless busywork.
@HEROoFTHEhorde1479 жыл бұрын
Lewis Medeiros In New Vegas, Arcade, one of the follows you can get, will only follow you if you pass a speech check, but if you have a low enough intelligence, he takes pity on you, and comes with you anyways.

15:00 that's ridicolous, yet it's one of the most used cliches in RPGs, it's in basically every Final Fantasy game, despite how cheap it is. Basically there's one villain through the game, but at one point near the end you're introduced to the MAIN villain, which comes basically out of nowhere, so you go there to fight it and he reveals that he really is the most powerful being in existence, that controls everything and in some cases that the previous villain was really good, but only influenced by this main one. So you destroy it and save the world. If that's not cheap writing I don't know what is. Sometimes they add a bit of clues that this main villain exists through the game, like a sage in one town that will talk about the ancient demon BLZZAZGORG, and it turns out to be the villain at the end, but in that same game you'll also have a lot of totally useless stories, like the little boy talking about the ancient hero of the statue, or the girl talking about her lost parents and so on, there's no way to tell which backstory will affect the plot, so it doesn't work as a foreshadowing.

So a god, who made the universe, created you as his antithesis, to kill him, and thus end the earth, so that he can reveal that he is immortal, and then undo everything you've done. Meaning you may as well never have left your starting village, despite the fact that you were made to do everything you did, so that he could undo it. My head hurts.

The ending of this game actually genuinely, honestly intrigues me. The universe is created and destroyed in a constant cycle of conflict - the eternal champion generates the universe from the void by the act of observing it, but over the millennia he grows jaded by his creation and his eventual experimentation with reality in a desperate search for novelty one way or the other creates a painful dystopia which demands a hero to react against it. The hero overthrows the god of the old world only to become the god of the new one and the cycle begins anew. Can it ever be broken?

This is my favorite ProJared review, and one of my favorite game reviews period. There's something about games with good ideas and a lot of potential that simply don't live up to it. That sense of disappointment was captured well here, and I feel like he gave the game a very fair review, very honest (as opposed to many reviewers who tend to choose comedy over expressing their true views).

wait, wait, hold the phone. So you are saying that Super Hydlide is actually an improvement than the original Hydlide? holy shit ... this is probably a ton more better in game development than the games of today where most current game developers care more about over-priced DLC, microtransactions and multiples re-releases of the same games over and over again because FUCK YOU!! GIVE ME MONEY!!! (and this came out in 1987, when the gaming industry was VERY, VERY new, and very early stages of life and this was 4 years after the crash of '83)

It's not just Hydlide... it's SUPER Hydlide! :P I always thought that was a funny title, since it came out on the Genesis but adding "Super" to a title was a SNES thing to do in my mind. This game has some interesting mechanics, but maybe just tried to do too much. That was rough about the game allowing you to throw away an item you needed. I know of a few games where that happens and it sucks when it does happen. But walking around in space and fighting with a lightsaber, awesome. ;)
