As an artistic and technical achievement this is beyond beautiful! However as a representation of the in-universe Black Mesa facility I prefer the more reserved and lived-in takes of HL1 and Black Mesa. This makes the facility appear a little too open, lively and awe-inspiring; after all its meant to be a pragmatic and sterile (and underground) workplace of a few thousand people, not an otherwordly wonderland metropolis. But man, I wish these guys would design an enviroment of their own for an original game.
@destin46663 жыл бұрын
It's even more open than Black Mesa by crowbar collective ( remake of hl1) but it's inspired a lot by it.

@@destin4666 Not just inspired, from the level architecture, scripted events and other cues it's evident that it's a directly based extension of it. Still impressive of course

I think this is a good fit, actually. I do fully believe that the quaint retrofuturism of HL1 was technical limitations and we'd have had a Black Mesa hinting at being some sort of massive sprawling city complex somehow concealed in the desert. To me, that sense of dread and wonder at the sheer scale of Black Mesa was a strength of HL1 and what makes Black Mesa so strong. I think it's fair to say that high tech futurism *was* the intended art direction for Black Mesa.
@sirjanska95752 жыл бұрын
@@untemperance I don't see what about Half-Life 1 was retrofuturistic tho, the aestethics followed pretty accurately what research centres and industrial plants are like even today

This is why I prefer HL1 over HL2. I loved the game taking place in a top secret Black Mesa facility with all the scientists and security there. It felt like something straight out of an episode of the X-files, especially also the G-Man stuff and when the military arrived later on.

Same here. Its really one of the first complaints I read when HL2 came out. Some fans wanted the story to unravel slower instead of having us jump into a post-apocalyptic world. @@me67galaxylife "you need shaders and stuff". The vast majority of games for the last 23 years are using shaders. Shaders are small programs that renders graphics data. Ironically, some of the best looking games do use pre-rendered lighting to pull off stuff that is demanding to do in real-time. Assassin's Creed Unity comes to mind, it had to sacrifice day and night cycle, but it visually beats a bunch of recent titles to a pulp.

It looks great, but remember Black Mesa was built inside an old decommissioned missile site. Some parts should look new. The stuff added onto the original facility. Also certain areas would undergo renovation. The rest should look like an abandoned facility with some late 60's and 70's computers and related tech. This was clearly indicated in the game that this was the case. As when Gordon is heading down to the Test chamber He witnesses all manner of malfunctioning outdated equipment that the scientists lament was never designed to do what they were doing with it.

Even though they are there since the original, and they do look cool, a gunship of that level is not useful at a research facility like Black Mesa. Its more useful at front lines in a war. A UH-60 Blackhawk with side door gunners and transport capability would be more appropriate.
