Fixing one hole, and make new one.
In this episode I try to make new panel for huge hole in the roof (welding it is another adventure) and make new hole for top back panel. Both were challenging tasks to do. Both tasks went through with Plan B.

This is a master sheet metal fabrication class right here... basically fabricating a 1971 Opel GT out of flat sheet metal, using the rusted out remains of an actual Opel GT as a guide...makes my pitiful attempts with premade patch panels on my C10 look like a kindergarten class, for sure...

That may be so, but I'm not even fabbing small patches yet, let alone complex curves... I've got a bunch of pre-made stamped out patch panels, & while I am getting decent results, & each one gets easier, that's not even close to what you're doing, hand forming all that, even with an English wheel & planishing hammer, that's some serious fabbing skills...

Fun Fact: The GTs body panels were originally made at a french manufacturing plant. Legend (?) has ist that this plant was bought up by the french government at the behest of their nationalized car manufacturers so no more panels could be made after the production run of the GT ended.

More good work and excellent results. A couple of suggestions, if I may. 1) If you are going to drill more holes in metal with hole saws, I suggest you get a set of carbide hole saws. A lot of times you can find used sets where only one or two of the saws has been used and they are a reasonable price. 2) Every video I have seen from a professional fabricator about using an English Wheel is the fabricators are adamant about keeping a high polish on the wheels and making sure they are as absolutely smooth as can be. I believe you are getting the marks on your metal due to the surface finish on your wheels.

And got it done when rpm was close to what was recommended... 2. SO true, if you noticed, I walked off the English wheel to get cleaned wheel when started to work with roof panel. I noticed from my episode 14 when I watched it myself, that the smaller wheel was really dirty... These kind of pro tips are always welcome !

Great video 🤩 happy to see that you fixed the rear end to your satisfaction. Again very impressive work with the English wheel. But who on earth came up with the idea to cut the cross bar in the roof in order to install a sunroof ? How can this be done on a German car in Germany ? How could German technical inspectors (TÜV) approve this ? I would call this a major impact to the stability of the basic structure to the disadvantage of the passengers. Unbelieveable. Should be illegal 🤯 Glad to see you fixed this. I enjoy every video so much. Keep on 👍🏻

A simple brick bolster is an excellent tool to use for forming those nice sharp creases in the roof beam. They also have enough mass to be used as a dolly when working body lines and creases with a hammer. Try and find one without the silly rubber handles, they just get in the way.

The roof panel lost its curve because you trimmed off the edge. The edge metal was keeping the shape you wheeled in the center. Once the edge was gone, the stretched metal inside was able to stretch out and that flattened the panel. Better to cut the panel almost to size in the beginning so less needs to be removed.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes, that was expected, my plan was to shrink the edges to create pressure for corners and then with english wheel work through the panel to desired shape. Aim was to have panel bending both directions (lengthwise and widthwise) to the point where there is no diagonal twisting (i.e. no pressure against edges) and THEN trim off the edges. However, the panel lost more its bending (in both ways) than I expected, hence plan B. I kindly disagree about cutting the panel straight away to correct size. I rather do it slightly bigger so I have bit more elbow room with the english wheel to find the correct shape within the boundaries of the final size of the hole (drawn with sharpie). I do understand your point, when the outer edge is not "wheeled" it has difference in pressure, and may cause distortion. However, if the panel is right away at the same size, the wheel should reach the far end of the panel edge, and popping off the edge all the time. And that would create even more uneven distortion for the edge. I still have some wheeling to do with the panel, it is still not at the correct hight, (+2mm upwards still needed). So I have to revisit the panel ....

Man, I've always wanted an Opel GT. I just love the shape. I always wanted to stuff a GM 3.8 V6 in one with a five speed and maybe a Jag rear end. Or even better, a small V8 like a Ford 302 or, just because I'm "Mr. AMC", an AMC 304 just to be different. But I'd do my utmost not to spoil the looks of the car.... I'd try to make the V8 fit under the stock hood.... other than some wider wheels and maybe side pipes..... 'cuz I gotta work my 1970's kink in there somehow. YES, there would be 8-tracks.... and a REAL flip-top racing fuel filler on the deck.

Yes, the shape of the car got my attention in early days, and now just must got one for me. There has been some V6 or V8 conversions but I try to stick with the original Opel 4 cylinder. But there are some plans to upgrade the engine at some extent. That is yet to be decided and revealed. My friend has a US import GT, and it has all the engine bay chopping done for accommodate V8, but he has took it all back and have converted it back to original shape. I do also like the original shape, WITH the exception of bigger wheels, and maybe somewhat lower overall look...Lets see how this goes...

It was a 2.0 and a four speed. It had recently had ALL the metal work done and had been painted British Racing Green. The interior was O.K., but needed better carpet and a few things to truly be flawless. I got to sit in the car, start then engine, etc. The seller wanted $3,000 US. So many cars trashed by those stupid cut-in sunroofs, almost as bad as t tops. I used to work in one of those big auto parts outfits back in the late 80's and sold bunches of them...guessing every one leaked. Partner's Ranchero GT got one at that time too...of course no floors left in it now

Thanks for the comment, Yes, those were pop in Finland in 80´s as well, and usually those were put on already cool cars like Ford Capris or other somewhat rare coupes....and ruined them for good..

I don't understand (never) why, when someone uses a template to mark out a panel on a sheet of metal, they do not put one (straight) edge of the template, on the straight edge of the metal...it saves a cut and saves material?
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, and views !! Reason for that is pretty simple. Usually bending radius's, and stretching and shrinking of metal surprises the maker. I rather have 10mm extra to cut off, than remake the panel for being 2mm too small, due to unexpected behavior of the metal. With the roof panel here, however, the reason was different. I made the panel slightly bigger so I have bit more room with the english wheel to find the correct shape within the boundaries of the final size of the hole (drawn with sharpie). if the panel is right away at the correct size, the wheel should reach the far end of the panel edge, and popping off the edge all the time. And that would create uneven distortion for the edge. I rather work through the shape and then trim off the edges.

Was sunroof optional on the gt or was it something that just people made them self?
@GT1900garage

Im not a Opel expert, but as far as I know, it was not an option. This sunroof was installed back in 80's I assume...It was a trend in Finland as well in 80's, but every person who did it (usually to some cool car, like Ford Capri) regret it badly afterwards...

It´s not my car I don´t like to drive an Opel GT with the Opel Kadett B pedals. I remember to drive this car in the Opel workshop. I think I would glue the roof panel in.

Only early GTs had the Kadett pedals. My GT is a 1973 and they're perfectly usable. I did drive a Kadett B Rallye once and it required a very delicate touch. Would not like that in a GT!

Thanks for comment. Not an expert of a Opels, but with decent suspension, somewhat spiced up engine, nice seat (compared to Mini)...I think I'm very happy driving this on Finnish roads at summer...And loving driving the Mini, with those pedals...I think I'm OK . Seriously considering the gluing the roof panel....

When I was working in a Sunderland UK bodyshop in the 90's the manager asked me to weld the sunroof up on a Jag XJS I said we haven't got the gear to do it I was told do my best I cut a sheet of steel to size welded it in filled it , I had spray filler on it after the bodyfiller I had blocked down one side he came across said doesn't have to that good it's getting a vinyl roof so the painter DA'd the other fitting it back up asked when the vinyl roof guy was coming he said he was only joking the looked a mess my side was mint , he was a right dick . I was freelancing in the 90's I was asked to price welding a sunroof up on a Bentley S1 at a guys house , I said a minimum of £500 say £1500 paint and materials in todays money I though that was cheap the bloke nearly had a heart attack quarter million ££££ house tight or what , didn't get the job TFFT .
