Changing the timing belt on a PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) 1.6 8v DV6c diesel engine. In this instance fitted to a 2011 Citroen Berlingo.
It is a fairly easy engine to change the timing belt on, very similar to the earlier 16v variant of this engine which i changed the belt on last year in a 307. Available here:

Just completed this job on my 61plate Ford Mondeo(same DV6c engine). Only problem I had, trying to fit a new aux belt with one hand while holding back the tension using a 15mm socket and extension bar with the other, I snapped the end off the tensioner and had to replace it costing me another £25. Safer to use a 15mm spanner and use the pin to lock it off than what I did....although I was originally looking to change that tensioner too but decided not to as it felt good. Nice video.

got yourself an oil cooler leak there ...I had to replace one recently, not only as the cooler was leaking, but someone had threaded the Oil filter housing cap...Peugeot wanted £60+ vat for the cap alone, so I got a scrap one for £20...sorted......Ive got 4 of these cambelts to do in the next 2 weeks...one PSA the other are Fords....good video!

Best timing belt tutorial on KZbin ! Is that flywheel pin alone strong enough to be able to torque the crank pulley ? Also does No1 piston have to be at TDC when fitting the timing pins ? Thanks.

Thank you for the video. I would appreciate your advice please. I bought a Dayco kit online. Strangely the belt tensioner plastic bag was open. The others in the box were sealed. Is it possible to damage the tensioner before it is installed by removing the pin ? When I came to line up the hole with the new belt on, I had to turn the allen key clockwise to line it up. However the arrow stated to turn it anticlockwise. I am concerned this could really cause a problem. What do you think , please ?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 7 ай бұрын
Hi there You got a new timing belt kit but the new tensioner does not have a pin? An allen key can be used for that purpose, but perhaps its worth chasing up the supplier to find out why the pin was missing. As the belt starts to get tight the arrow starts to point in the right place, i personally dont care too much about anti clockwise/clockwise if its tensioned correctly then the arrow will point between the two tabs then the central nut is then tightened and the engine can be turned over a few times by hand common sense can dictate if it will be ok. However its best to possibly find out why that arrived to you opened.

Excellent tutorial, I´m fairly confident I should be able to manage this on my 2014 1,6 hdi Berlingo It is now showing 168,000km and according to Citroen it should be changed at 180,000 or 10 years. A colleague of mine bought a 2016 Berlingo 1,6 hdi with a snapped timing belt but the car had covered less than 100,000 km at the time, he got the car very cheap 4000 euros and repaired it himself at a cost of about 1000 euros in parts ( I believe the rockers snapped and avoided more serious damage to the pistons and valves) Anyway he along with another mechanic have said these engines require much earlier belt changes than specified and have seen these cars with much lower mileages with badly worn belts with worn teeth, have you experienced any similarly badly worn belts on these engines at low miles? thanks again for this tutorial.

Hi there, I am not a full time mechanic by trade, i work as a design engineer just go out to the shed and make these videos as a hobby. It makes me unable to comment on things such as frequency of issues or what mechanics are supposed to charge. However keeping an eye on owners clubs/facebook pages/forums etc is always a good enough way to get an idea of this sort of thing. I know the 1.6 is supposed to snap its rocker arms which makes recovery after a snapped belt less expensive than some other engines. If i recall correctly the service handbook has a reduced timing belt change interval for cars used in "arduous conditions" which might be construed as ones doing a lot more stop start urban driving. If i recall correctly the 1.6 is supposed to be around 120k miles or 10 years. For the sake of the cost of a timing belt kit your far better airing on the side of caution and changing it earlier. The old 2.0 HDi engine was a much shorter interval i think something like 70k miles and 5 years which was not unreasonable. Same goes for the oil change interval the older 1.6 16v engines had something daft like 20,000 miles but i personally stick to 1 year or 10,000 miles whatever comes first.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Hi and thanks for your reply, I´ll go ahead and change the timing belt asap to play it safe, I agree with you that the oil change interval seems quite long, I have always changed the oil and filter at around 10,000km and it runs great with no oil consumption

Just wonder how you removed all the water that was put in by the hose before adding premixed anti freeze. It looked like you had system full of water and then just added anti freeze (do not know if it was pure or diluted) and ran engine until anti-freeze came out of bleed nozzles.

Just watched this from start to finish. Although timing belt replacement is maybe beyond me at the minute, I found your video fascinating. I got mine replaced about 4 years ago just after I got the Partner but once I build up my tool kit and improve my skills, I would rule out doing the next one 😊. Liked the little licking pins. Didnt know they were available. Always read about Tippex marking TDC. That scared me a little! Also the pressure tester - handy tool. You've a great setup there. Your vids are better than a Haynes Manual. I bought one recently and was really disappointed when I compared it to some of the older manuals I have. Not a decent drawing in it. Terrible photos badly cross referenced with the text. Look forward to next tutorial.

It does make me laugh when people tippex an engine that not only has timing marks, but timing holes...it's like writing the name of a street below the name plate, the information is already there but for some reason, even garages still use tippex. As for Haynes, a bit disappointed the manual for my 2011 Mondeo(identical DV6c engine) is now a soft back rather than hard back but then found out once I got it home, it doesn't even cover this bloody engine dispite covering the years 2007 to 2012. I've bought Haynes manuals for every car I've owned since the 80's and even just for cars I've done jobs on....this was a complete waste of 20 quid and I'm not sure I could buy another in the future.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
The tippex method probably saves a bit of time but its far more reassuring when you have a set of locking pins to work with. The chrysler PT cruiser belt i did late last year had no provisions for locking pins so tippex had to be used, it just felt such an inferior engine in terms of engineering because of it. The pressure tester kit was less than £50 off ebay, chinas finest but it had been very useful at detecting leaking pipes or radiators. Thanks i try to provide the same level of information as the haynes manual but its not great working from small black and white photos and having to constantly refer back to tables at the start of each chapter for torque figures.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
@@Grinder-one Quite a common issue the haynes manual not covering all engines, it used to be with peugeots that you bought the haynes manual for the cars and had the seperate manual for the engines. Emanuals online is very good in that regard as you can get the dealer manuals which usually specify what engines are covered.

great video ;) a little help: in a 308 t9 1.6 ehdi with i believe same engine to replace only the alternator/ ac belt do i need to turn the crankshaft twice clockwise after replacement?!
@PetterSolbergfan
@PetterSolbergfan 3 жыл бұрын
For a simple serpentine belt change, not really. This is only done after the timing belt change to check if everything is all right, the engine can be turned over as it should be (no excess force is required, there are no problems eg. valves hitting pistons, etc.) and to let the belt even itself out a bit before starting the engine.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Turning the engine by hand is done as a check, in the case of the timing belt it is to check that everything is timed correctly and the pistons dont hit the valves. If they do its hard to bend valves by hand, but if you were to crank the engine over on the starter it would turn with enough force to do damage. With the alternator belt turning it over by hand is just to check that the new belt is correctly aligned with the pulleys.

Hi Thanks for video. Appreciate any feedback on how to remove crank pulley bolt for this engine with automatic transmission and no battery impact gun ( have breaker bar).
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV Жыл бұрын
Hi there Unfortunately i can only really advise you to borrow or buy an impact wrench. I tried at the very early days of my car tinkering to get by without one, breaker bar, chains etc none of that worked. Hit my knuckles and injured them, said eff that and that was the end of trying alternative methods to loosen the bolt. Took it to a mates with a pneumatic impact wrench and instantly the bolt was off. Especially when it comes to an automatic its far less hassle just to get the impact wrench. Just be sure to use the locking pins correctly if you do plan to change the timing belt.

Which coolant pressure tester are you using? Have you got a make / part number or maybe you know a number of pieces in the kit? I have seen different ones on ebay, but I'm not sure which one will fit a standard Citroen reservoir. I just want to make sure that the bottle's neck thread size / pitch will match the thread of the adaptor. Thanks.

(It was a very generic kit off ebay (unfortunatley i have no link), most likely from china (it has chinese text on the box) but sold from a UK seller for fast delivery. I remember reading the listings to ensure i got one that mentioned PSA specific reservoir cap adapters. Ive had it about 3 years now and it works reasonably well, was a fraction of the price of a Sealey one which looks very similar to most of the ones on ebay.

i have my first DV6C and I did the timing belt change at 50.000km cause it had 5 years, and it was completely in good form, waste of money and time. in the manual says you must do services every 10.000km, think that's a lie too. What do you think, must do oil and filters services every 10.000km or what?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV Жыл бұрын
Im not 100% sure but i think the service handbook has a timing belt interval of well over 70k miles or 10 years for that engine not entirely sure but its more than 50k / 5 years. Having said that its better to air on the side of caution than to gamble with cambelts Oil change intervals I think PSA recommended 12.5k miles for oil (again im not 100% sure) with diesels ive generally done it every year or 6,000 miles whatever comes first. Especially modern diesels the cost of some oil is offset by ensuring everything is in good working order.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the timing belt breaking tends to do damage to other parts of the engine. These engines are an interference engine so there is a strong chance the pistons will have hit the valves. I think there is a chance (dont quote me on this as i have never dealt with the aftermath of a broken timing belt) but there is a chance that the rocker arms will have snapped rather than the pistons or the valves taking the brunt of the damage.
