You are right about the engineers trying to do something different on just about everything, but the main reason is avoidence of patent payments if they use someone elses designs. On rare occasion they actually improve the engine by accident mainly.
@TestECull
@TestECull 2 жыл бұрын
The main reason is to increase revenues, actually. PACCAR makes more money if you have to put a shortblock in the truck than if you can just throw a set of bearings and a crank in the existing one.

I have rebuilt a few engines that utilized cracked main caps that suffered from spun main bearings. The way the machine shop I use dealt with it is by machining the end of the main caps and the main cap register on the block. Once the ends of the caps were machined flat the block and caps were drilled for locating dowels and the caps were bolted back into the block and it was line bored. After that they recut the the notches for the bearings. If everything is done correctly the crankshaft centerline would not be affected. It is essentially the same process as resizing the big ends of connecting rods. Depending on the cost of a new block it may not be worth doing that machine work. If oversize main bearings were available for the paccar mx13 engine there wouldn't be any issues with reusing that block. Another option would be plasma transferred wire arc spray welding which is used by many oem manufacturers. That process can be used to create cylinder liners on aluminum blocks and ford actually used that process for the gt350 engine and for their reman diesel engine so they can return bores to standard sizes.

Make an A frame and put thick foam on the front and botton of the A frame so when you need to put anything thats delicate like a radiator you don't have to worry about crushing any pipes or plastic and when you lean it back you wont hurt any coils in the radiator. You won't bend any flaps so it'll stay open for air to go through.

Its very frustrating when you work on an new Engine. But to be honest after you have pulled one or two MX13s, they are quite easy to remove. Its just knowing what needs removing and although they may look complicated at first glance. We find them no harder than a Cummings or Detroit. But I must agree about modern Engines and plastic parts.

Fractured caps save a bit of machine time but they are used due to being the best location method for caps. Broken cranks and spun bearings are very rare failures so you don't compromise strength for serviceability in this case.

DD15 the compressor coolant lines If there are the factory original Black plastic lines don't fuck around with them Replace with the updated steel lines. They will start out with a little dribble/small leak and then snap off going down the road and turn into Ochit Dont ask how I know The Paccar coolant leak on the R/S frame rail is the coolant tree/manifold leaking They usually leak because the nipples are pressed in They heat up expand and leak Also you may want to do a crankcase filter on that engine prior to installing They are a PITA to access when in the frame I usually pull the ECM to gain access Check coolant lines on back of the compressor they are prone to leaking

I happen to catch a radio show the other day where someone had called in with the same broken crank scenario on an MX. apparently it’s becoming somewhat of a common issue caused by mechanical over speed. Jaking for long periods at high rpm’s loaded heavy is usually the event prior leading up to it. It’s really to bad seeing that fractured main. Everything is becoming throw away unfortunately.

I'm confused about something. You said you put a transmission jack under the tranny to hold it up - but if you are lifting the engine high enough to clear that front crossmember so that you can move the engine forward to get it off the input shaft - how is the transmission not binding all of this up because it would lift up with the engine, putting an incredible load on the clutch splines/input shaft, and binding to the point of not allowing the engine to move forward. Not to mention, what happens to the transmission when the input shaft comes out? The tranny would fall back down onto the jack saddle. How did you pull this off?

This man knows his way around heavy equipment. Question? I’ve worked on small cars and sometimes worry about forgetting which bolt goes where and how did it go together again? Warren works on a variety of equipment and doesn’t always have the luxury to work on one thing from start to finish. How do stay organized which such major tear downs? Designers suck. I agree. My field is cartography, map making. Way back in the 70's we were trying to use computers to help us. We had to hire programmers. They would always produce a program, usually one that didn't work without a lot of tweaking. The problem was there were no programmers who also knew how to make an accurate map. So when they thought they had a good product they actually had a bad product. Over time we learned to do our own programming and eventually solved the problems. Moral of story is: if you're the office guy make damn sure you get your ass to the field to see how things actually work.

Personally I’m a huge fan of the ISX’s so that’s what I’d swap it over to… no pushrods like this engine just a simple overhead cam. As for transmission… most semis unless you are running a auto are pretty the same mount as you can get a variety of motors in the same truck.

Great work sir! Really appreciate the videos. I am sure you’ve been asked this many times, but what area in CA are you in?

My mechanic and I just finished a complete out of frame rebuild on my 12.7 Detroit. I appreciate my engine. But, after watching you work on that new piece of shit, I appreciate it 10 times more. Emission engines are GARBAGE!!

Party on Garth, you're being too polite about engineerds. Ball sack kicking and all. They should have to work a week in a shop before designing anything

It always makes me laugh when you see engineered part that are built and used in machinery that could have been better designed by the guy in the workshop for easy of repairs and maintenance. Had jobs to do that were drawn up in cad and when been put together could not fit because other parts are in the way.
