I agree with you. Too many naive voices here who are pretending Ukraine is winning because they had a few tactical wins. In the long term, Ukraine cannot win; not against somebody as dangerous as Putin. So either they give up the Donbas, or the Ukraine will get destroyed. And I am saying this as someone who is 100% anti-Putin. But my view on the matter doesn't matter in light of the facts: Putin is very dangerous, and when he says that eventually he will use nukes, we should believe him. And he will drop them on the Ukraine (meaning Kiev), not on any European territory. Since the Ukraine doesn't have such weapons, it will be game over (destroying the command infrastructure and demoralising troops in the field). A nuclear retaliation from the US or Europe - to revenge Kiev - would just mean all-out destruction on global scale; therefore, the West is unable to actually counterstrike, while Putin can get away with one tactical nuclear strike that is war-ending. I don't expect this to happen soon though, since his first strategy is partial mobilisation (300.000 people) and an increased weapon production in Russia (further switch to a so-called war economy). He can then further increase his mobilisation even more if needed, before he has to turn to the nuclear strike. Nowhere in this scenario is the Ukraine "winning." And neither is Europe.

@cantiaci2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, except it isn't to boost public morale it is to boost Putin's popularity. As a narcissist and the malignant variety at that, Putin needs his ego boost, his injection of praise, from the poor deluded, brainwashed souls that make up the majority of the Russian population. Russia had a torrid time during the Covid pandemic. Don't believe the death figures on Worldometer they are grossly under declared. In the first few months of the pandemic Russia were only declaring a handful of deaths every day despite almost every other European country declaring far more. It is ridiculous to think that Russia were somehow fairing better than countries with far better health services especially as Russian investment in their health service is way lower than almost any other European country. There were reports of bodies literally being piled up in the streets coming out of Russia yet their death figures reflected none of this. It is of course no surprise that these figures would be manipulated, both in light of public opinion of Putin and his government but also Putin's paranoia of the Western World seeing Russia as a weakened nation. Eventually once other countries death figures started mounting up they had little option other than to start declaring figures that were at least vaguely plausible. The Covid pandemic put a massive dent in Putin's popularity not to mention highlighting the gross underfunding of their health service. A Bloomberg report ranked Russia's health service 55th of 55 of all developed nations, this is a major decline since 1996 when their health service was considered quite innovative. I doubt I need to point out who has been in charge for the majority of the time since 1996, I wonder where all that money went that should have been spent on the health service.......

Germany doesn't get an edge because of the reversal of their energy market because they created and benefitted from that market for years and were set to continue that with Nord 2 at the expense of Ukraine. Now, not to send to Ukraine what they promised, Germany continues to undermine Ukraine and shifts more burden to the other countries just as they have underfunded their NATO contributions. So, as an admirer of many things German, I'm a skeptic, as people and buildings in Ukraine are being blown apart and their infrastructure demolished. And, if Germany had told Putin, unequivocally, that Nord 2 would be halted if Russia did not conduct its "training" excercises elsewhere, then, I believe, that promise could have possibly prevented this attack that would have been almost on level with China telling Putin to back off ,!!!

Most expressions go back as far as antiquity. hardly anyone says anything actually new, they just dust off and remix an idea to make it look new. Netanyahu no doubt and most likely himself "purloined" the expression from someone else. Eisenstein said E=mc², now THAT was an original statement that you won't find written on a 1000 year old parchment or painted by a caveman on a wall!

Why do reporters keep questioning Western resolve? Frankly, it's amazing given the number of countries that have to approve any strategy. Russia and China lack the allies to do anything like it. Plus there are other countries that want to join NATO.

Germany put itself in hock to Russia years ago and their misplaced sense of guilt has makes them slow to act. Remember at the start, US and UK arms supplies to Ukraine had to avoid German airspace. Ukraine losing would obviate any extra spending on their own defence. Macron played the bleeding heart for too long wanting to be seen as a big world negotiator which only gave Putin credence.

Putin's dear friend, Erdovan, says that the Crimea peninsula should be handed back to Ukraine, and the Donbas region is part of Ukraine. (Recent interview in PBS.) His statement that Putin wants to see an end to the war is just Putin lying to his face. Erdogan so much want to be an important figure, but he seems quite powerless in helping solve this conflict. He will be remembered for trying to stop Sweden from becoming a NATO member.

Erdogan does not want a conflict with Russia, he needs the money from the trade with Russia, but he is helping Ukraine, hoping they will get Crimea back with the help of the other NATO countries, Erdogan does not want a Russian military dominance in the Black Sea

Putin has 2 options. One, he can end the war and accept the loss of Russia and best case scenario flee to North Korea or keep fighting. Which one would you do?

In his book, 'The Road to Unfreedom', Timothy Snyder gave an insight into the Russian political mind and why it is, according to those politicians, that Russia can never be wrong: 'The parliamentary deputy Tatiana Saenko...claimed that Western objections to the Russian invasion of Ukraine were a matter of "double standards." This common Russian argument made of law not a general principle, but a cultural artifact located among non-Russian peoples. Western states do not always follow every law, it ran, law had no viability. Russia, too, might violate laws; but since Russia did not accept the rule of law, this was not hypocritical. Since Russia was not hypocritical, it was innocent. If there are no standards, went the reasoning, then there are no double standards. If Europeans or Americans mention international law during a time of such Russian innocence as the invasion of Ukraine, this makes them a spiritual threat. And so reference to international law only demonstrated Western perfidy.' pp.143/4 Synder's book was first published in 2018.

Russia is one of the most lawless nations I've ever lived in. If there are laws written somewhere, nobody cares. They are not the least bit concerned with laws, rules, or formalities.

No country supplies western tanks to Ukraine, not the UK, not the US. I wonder why Germany is permanently called out on this.
@mhh75442 жыл бұрын
I ve wondered the same, whats so miraculous in western tanks, apart the price off course. We have some 200 Leopard 2 A 6/ A4s, and we scrapped old soviet tanks long ago. I ve seen photo evidence of old Patria 6X6 wheeled APCs are being given, as well as 120mm mortars, modernized twin barell 40mm AA guns. That been said, I can clerly understand why we are not giving any tanks away.

Germany will supply legacy Leopard 2 tanks to Slovakia then they will send Soviet-era fighting vehicles to Ukraine deal signed on friday past i believe.
