I think neoliberalism is a lot less even handed than you describe. Most definitions I've seen of a neoliberal is maximising privatisation and austerity. It's a disastrous ideology IMO that destroyed the trade unions and Job security in my country the UK. Then there was literally anytime she talks about race... Raising the minimum wage is important. Without having a minimum wage, you have employers paying as little as they possibly can and forcing their workforce into poverty. Ultimately, companies should have to pay their workforce a livable wage. It's a dignity thing.
@doperagu8471
@doperagu8471 4 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but some of those huge companies/corporations who pay minimum wage, or law wages, pay minimal to NO income taxes. So we end up having employees of these multi-million/billion dollar companies needing to apply for programs like SNAP or TANF, etc... while their employer pays no taxes. I don't think any corporation should be able to receive tax beaks if they also have full-time employees needing government assistance programs based on the wages they offer.

@@katfoster845 Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yes, it refers to federal minimum wage, but you miss the point. If employers pay as little as they can then why only small fraction of employees is paid the minimum? The point is the minimum wage does not matter, because oeople are paid more anyway. It may be even harmful, because if someone's work is worth less than minimum wage, such person will not be hired. Instead current workers with better skills and experience will be demanded to work more or employers will invest e.g. in machines and automatization.

@@MrSchmupps Yes, of course as technology progressed so did and so will living conditions. Well, for the most part. Hello automation. But remember the gilded age of American capitalism run amuck was only golden for the wealthy powerful few. Without regulation to hold back the most greedy and exploitative, we had horrific working conditions with long hours. We had children working in dangerous factory jobs just so the family could afford to eat, and company towns often ruling as petty local dictators, all as the wealthy employing class lived in lavish luxury. These conditions were so grave we very nearly could have had another revolution over it. Just look up the Battle of Blair Mountain of 1921 for perhaps the most dramatic example, with 6,000-8,000 armed unionized men fighting 1,000-2,000 men of the company town who had machine gun nests and pipe bomb dropping private planes. Mysteriously that one seems to often be absent from the history textbooks for some reason. Living conditions have absolutely gotten better and few in their right minds, and most certainly not any socialists, will argue that capitalism wasn't a massive improvement over feudalisms and absolute monarchies. That doesn't change the fact that the US economy is set up as a house of cards that endangers the financial security of the average working class American to the benefit of the corporations. And it certainly doesn't change the fact that these labor protections that make living conditions in this house of cards economy just somewhat bearable were won in workers blood from the employing class, regardless whatever sanitized version of labor history you were taught in high school might tell you. None of that is to say we should take on the same systems as say, China for example. I'm merely stating this idea that letting some rich billionaire owners of multinational megacorporation's have nearly absolute control and unaccountable power over the means of production of the resources of the world is.... Not smart, not smart at all, and neither is turning that power over to bureaucrats either. The problem goes beyond just "big government" or class conflict, the problem is power. And until we find a way to solve the issue of such immensely powerful unjust hierarchies like these, maybe with some effective form of workplace democracy for large corporations, any truly liberatory hopes for humanity will be nothing but a pipe dream.

That being said, I think it’d be unfair for either one of us to try to change the other one. He’s very understanding and accommodating, though. When I cook vegan meals, he’ll eat them. When we eat at a restaurant, he makes sure there’s a vegan option. He surprises me with vegan snacks and never tries to get me to eat meat, etc. At the same time, I don’t yell at him for eating meat. He generally eats less meat since being with me and doesn’t often have raw meat in the house. If we need to, we’ll just cook separate meals and then eat them together. Why did you choose to marry someone who doesn't share your core ethical beliefs or ability to empathize with others? If, hypothetically, he didn't have an issue buying shirts that he knew women were forced to die making but sometimes bought non-women-mudering clothing when he's around you would that be acceptable to you? Unless he's unable to avoid killing animals for some reason I don't understand that.

@@Nayr747 One issue alone should not determine how a relationship copes. Coming up with rape/murder scenarios (as vegans often do) that we know darn well no reasonable person would accept is not a fair comparison and shows you lack the skills to even make your own point. Mature people understand some things are able to be overlooked/accepted in a partner if they have their own valid reasons for their beliefs. Why are your beliefs MORE important than a partners? What if they try and health causes them to need to stop - you dump them? You've given this no thought.
@Nayr747
@Nayr747 4 жыл бұрын
@@tkps No it's actually not that I haven't given it enough thought. It's that you can't read. As I've already explained to you several times someone is wrong when they make a *choice* to harm or kill others when they don't have to. I specifically listed health issues as one of those mitigating factors. You either can't read or you're being disingenuous. To your point about one issue, that's clearly a nonsense argument. If your partner is perfect but doesn't share your belief that your kids should eat food that's good for them, or that kids shouldn't be neglected, or that yelling at them or hitting them aren't good ways to parent (all beliefs that some people hold), and you want to have kids, then this single issue is (hopefully) a deal breaker. The same should be true if you understand that hurting or killing others unnecessarily is wrong and your partner doesn't. The analogy I used about women is sound. If you don't think so then you need to explain what specifically about it, in your opinion, doesn't work. Just because it makes you uncomfortable isn't an argument against it. You need to learn how to form your thoughts logically and coherently.

Interesting to get to know your political views. I understand that your ideology is, like veganism, driven by reducing suffering. Which I completely agree on, since I am vegan myself. But I can't understand how reduced suffering and care for the poor, can walk hand in hand with capitalism. I really can't. I get it if you don't want to discuss this on your channel, but I would like to hear your thoughts on this more in depth. Refering to the article you mentioned: "We think that markets are by far the best way of organising most human affairs that involve scarce resources, because they align people’s incentives in ways that communicate where resources can be be used most efficiently, and give people reasons to come up with new ways of using existing resources. This means that markets and market-like systems are desirable in many, many places they’re not present at the moment - healthcare, education, environmental policy, organ allocations, traffic congestion, land-use planning." Things like healthcare and education ARE NOT to be capitalized. Making human needs into businesses is one of the most leading causes of suffering. I don't get this.

Also the line is not clear, because some creatures are still not determines as plants or maybe bacteria or algie or animals (biology student here). And we can't forget that no matter how much evolved humans are and our moral ethics which we made ourselves are, killing other species and eating them is what helped us evolve in first place and that's just how nature works and has been for billions of years. So I don't believe in veganism as natural diet or anything, it can only be lifestyle based on ethics, which are not facts and do defy nature laws sometimes. Although reformist capitalism (which could resemble social democracy) might take less massive systemic changes, it also very incrementalist so it could take too long before any meaningful change is implemented. There's a spectrum of free markets in terms of regulation. You can support free markets but also see the need to regulate them (carbon tax is one way for example). And as far as capitalism, I think a majority of people support that? People who genuinely want to throw out capitalism and get rid of markets are pretty radical, and few and far between. I will admit it's funny how she criticised some policies of having unintended consequences when she repeatedly supports a carbon tax which has proven to disproportionately impact working families (for the actions and carbon footprint of the wealthy) It's very much a regressive tax.

I was vegan for 5 years and definitely didn't think I'd ever "quit". Unfortunately there's a global pandemic which had other plans. I'll be vegan when it's possible again, and I still care about animals. But until you personally have faced hallucinations from malnourishment over the course of weeks, you have no idea how fragile your vegan stance will be. At the end of the day I am also an animal that wants to live and I have survival instincts. And I am eating only lacto vegetarian now, no flesh, no eggs, etc. I cried the day I finally ate a yogurt, and I cry at least every week thinking about my diet. But if you can't even get bare essentials like dry beans, tofu, oats, quality produce etc it is impossible to maintain sanity and health as a vegan. When I was vegan I spent every Saturday driving to 3 different stores to get all the groceries I needed. Because I am high risk, I had to quit my nursing job and cannot go to stores or anywhere to shop. I have to budget strictly and order from the cheaper stores that have a lot less options from the start but also aren't well stocked, and I am relying on someone else to pick my produce. Comes to find out most people are terrible at that. I feel bad but others don't make me feel worse, I know at least 99.9% of people have no idea what this is like.

The elasticity of demand, how likely people are to buy/not buy and item dependant on price change or other factors, also depends on this. So basically - market regulates itself through many producers/consumers, fair prices are created and an equal amount of goods are able to be made for demand. If someone were to get their definition of veganism from a blog, which was wrong, and then claim to be it, would you take issue with it? Judging by the content you make, which is usually well referenced and scientifically based, I think you probably would, expect a higher degree of rigor. So in that vein, I would like to suggest you revisit your self definition as neo-liberal. Not because your opinions are wrong, but because the opinions you subscribe too are typically labelled as modern liberalism. FDR was a modern liberal, pushing for state intervention in areas where the pure market ideology of classical liberalism had failed. Neo-liberalism, is something of an abbreviation for Neo-Classical-Liberalism. Those that subscribe to it, most notably the likes of Hayek and Friedman argue that we need to return to Classical Liberal ideas, debate the success of the economic policies of FDR and Atlee. They also added a nationalist twang to their liberalism ... which Thatcher and Reagen brought into government with them and has been incredibly prevalent in political discourse to this day. This is a large part of what distinguishes them from Classical Liberals who idealised a world where boarders basically ceased to be. Hayak in particular was quite aggressively anti immigration and was in fairly regular communication with Thatcher about her governments immigration policies. Libertarians diverge from those Neo-libs and classical libs A) by being disingenuous and often not actually being libertarians at all or B ) Believing effectively in no role for the state at all. I get that language usage changes and so on, but I would genuinely recommend that if you want to dig down into this usage of neo-liberal, that you back it up with academic or mainstream sources, not some random guys blog. Because in either of those two cases, unless there has been massive shifts in the last 8 years since I finished my degree, then this is still pretty well defined. Just to reiterate again, whilst I have my own views on this subject (I am socialist and I would burn your liberal institutions to the ground, just the same as I would burn any other brand of liberalism or any other ideologies institutions to the ground if I could), none of this should be taken as a value assessment of Neo, Modern, Classical or Liber ... actually Libertarians suck and I won't try and pretend otherwise. I respect you have your views, and they are yours to have. But in the same way I think you would expect rigor from someone talking about veganism or the agrochem industry, I also think this is something we can be rigorous about too.

I am ambivalent about all these animal videos. Sure the rescue ones are harmless and probably even supporting the right organizations, however I have also seen animal-related videos on youtube which are borderline animal exploitation. Joey Graceffa' s video of his foster cat giving brith is just cruel to watch in my opinion. I would love to hear your opinion on this as well!

This kinda made me question how I think about neolobralim. I guess I've always associateed neoliberalism with the Reagan administration. I don't think anyone could call that time 'reduced suffering'. Excited to research more!

Besides her medium article, you're not really going to find any info on neoliberalism that makes you feel better about it LOL It's still Reaganism at the end of the day no matter how she or the medium author try to spin it

My body just did not like pregnancy at all!! (Or birth for that matter - it took 80 hours and ended in a c-section!!) I thought with being in my twenties I’d just sail through. I have diastasis which has not closed 19 months later and now have a hernia. I didn’t realise I had endometriosis but was diagnosed about a year after giving birth because the symptoms got worse (likely due to my c-section). Plus I developed this fucking hideous pelvic pain condition called vestibulodynia during the 2nd trimester, which I’ll likely need surgery to correct. My aunt had the same thing with endo getting worse but all the complications other women in family have had are very different to mine 🤷🏻‍♀️ No way I could’ve predicted this! I then tried to take an anti-depressant because I was feeling so low and like I didn’t recognise my body anymore... and then had a really bad reaction to it and ended up in A&E! 😂 Honestly the last two years of my life have been fucking bizarre. Never again! 😂🤣😭

Do people in the US even have politics as a class in high school? If you do, it doesn't show. Neoliberalism is not whatever you want it to be. Thatcher and Reagan are prime examples of what terrible things that ideology can cause. Also neoliberal institution have never, in the history of ever, helped the global south. Furthermore neoliberalism is at odds with environmental justice when it comes to first vs third world countries. tl;dr, the US is a fucked-up place both politically and in terms of circumsizing infants just because, fucking nuts.
