You should never get involved as a 3rd party. Inserting yourself as a 3rd party when you dont know the full story is a huge error. 1st off the police have qualified immunity. The rest of us do not. 2nd you have no idea if the cop is a criminal. Cops can be just as dangerous as any criminal. In fact they usually are more dangerous because people trust the state too much

@@captaincapitalism264 In the handful of active shooter first response videos I’ve seen, I noticed the officer flanks then immediately drops the shooter. No commands, no warning. It might be part of the training or maybe the shooter was currently drawn on someone. I don’t know because it’s always blurred but It’s enough for me to really consider the consequences of helping in that situation.

I almost got shot a few years back. Iam a 15 year federal officer. I had just got off duty. I changed out of uniform as soon as I get off. I had my badge on my hip and my duty weapon. Some dude walked up to me and asked for a light. It was a joint but I was off the clock so I didn't give a shit. I lit it for him and his friend my neighbor yelled out that I was a cop. He pulled a knife and started walking towards me. My wife had came out I told her to get back in the house. I called the local dispatch who recognized my voice and said they were sending help. I kept backing up he kept following me. If he would have been white I probably would have fired but this was the height of BLM and I didn't want to be on the news for that shit. A female officer pulls in and sees my weapon starts yelling for me to drop it I told her I wasn't throwing my 1911 on the ground where he could reach it so I placed it on my tail bed and turned so she could see my badge and I yelled to hear who I was. Suspect took off they lost sight of him. That night he killed his ex wife and sister. Now I have to leave with not taking the shot.

It’s just because it’s dangerous for the civilian himself. An officer arrives as backup and sees someone in plain clothing they don’t recognize with a gun, they could not know if he’s good or bad. When I was a younger Marine Officer i pulled over on the side of I-35 because this guy was chasing this woman around the car. Got out in uniform with my service weapon on me. I asked him to stop, told her to get into my vehicle. He went toward his car and started to search for something. I pulled out my .45 and was dead set on killing him if he pulled out a weapon and I told him so. He took off and Highway Patrol showed up. I gave them the tag number and they took the young lady to the hospital. The officer never questioned me about my gun, he was former service as well, called my sir and by my rank. Many of us so called "Civilians", have more training and capabilities than these local Mayberry cops do.

@NicCageForPresident2024 I'm sure, I'm just saying that at a glance when a new officer arrives on scene it might not be immediately obvious if someone in plain clothes is helping or an aggressor. Sure there are tells, but mistakes can be made. I've even heard a story of a citizen pulling a gun on an aggressor that then got shot by another well-meaning gun carrying citizen because he read the situation wrong. I'm formally trained on firearm use and safety myself, and I'm not saying you should never help should the need arise.

Having taken the Glock Armorers class three times over the years, I am the only civilian in the class. Everyone else is LEO and some of those are former military. Instructor asked how many rounds a year do you shoot in training. Some responded, maybe half, between 500 and 1000. There were a couple that were up around 6 to 7k, but they were SWAT members. Average was around 500 rounds or less. All due respect, LEOs are not as well trained with firearms as everyone is led to believe.

While I would always help a police officer in danger I fully accept that other officers rolling up into a situtation, especially if there has been fire, that I might get shot by mistake. Yeah, he claimed it was a problem because he doesn't know whether someone is properly trained. Meanwhile, a whole lot of LEOs are not _properly_ trained. I live in a town where the local PD uses one of the public ranges, instead of having their own (no money in the budget for their own facility). It's actually kinda nice because there's a lot of friendly interaction between us and our local cops. However, most of them are definitely not marksmen and several are more likely to sweep someone than the majority of people using the range. It _has_ helped them to want to be better, because getting out-shot by a bunch of regular Joes is a little embarrassing. However, they're not there, yet. I can't imagine how bad it is in places where officers train in private, and don't have to worry about the public seeing that they're a terrible shot.

This meant you had to be ready in a minutes notice to defend. There was no such thing as a professional military and was volunteers who were fed up with England's rule. I would argue a person who is Concealed carry would fall under this definition. As first active support for police officers to render first aid and cpr and support or cover fire. If we ever got invaded our professional military would go off to fight. Our police would then become paramilitary and we would then become the militia which is an in-between which utilizes some training but not full military training or training and waiting to be called by the military. Depends on the militia. I got gear in the event of an apocalypse and can have it ready in a couple minutes.

Civilians don't get trained on how to handle and use guns in law enforcement situations and scenarios. They usually know nothing of police tactics or strategy, much less having practiced them. They are liable to flag friendlies in high stress situations or even shoot them. They are much more likely to give into instinct or impulse and dangerously escalate a situation where cooler heads would otherwise prevail. Civilians are trained how to handle guns in a recreational setting, or for self/home defence, NOT on how to use them as law enforcement tools. Some are well trained to use them effectively for self defence, but that has limited relevance in a LE situation. Totally different things. Edit: stay mad, most of you who think you're a hero just waiting for your moment are idiots, like house cats who think they are kings of the jungle but need their poop scooped.

@@BjAn Cops "range time" is almost exclusively in an indoor pistol range, shooting at paper silhouettes. Everyone I know at the range has more training with more targets than that. I used to work with a local PD, and I'd trust the knowledge, experience, training, and just plain old safety mindset of the range guys before I'd automatically trust any badge. This fits sense their trained that the citizens are their enemy. This is why cops approach most situations with a very combative mentality. Think about this. Thankfully it was a positive outcome but the next "intervention" might not be and someone's Mom/Dad could end up dead be it the civilian or Officer because of such a situation. It's also possible that criminals could try to ambush Police by "pretending to be there to help" and then take their lives. Then what happens the next time a random civilian tries to actually help and the civilian gets shot dead by Police. This can go on and on. So the Sgt., has right to be grateful but discourage the practice in general for the safety of the public and Officers.

Friend of mine's dad a Vietnam vet who recently passed away saved an officer's life. He heard gunshots he knew what they were he grabbed his 30/30 ran outside found an officer who had been hit pointed his 30/30 at the assailant and told him if he didn't leave the area he would be killed. The man left the area. He was given an award by the governor of Kansas the policeman was grateful and it was sad that the guy was actually coming to finish the officer off. If it's a liability issue to assist your sherif who is potentially going to be out gunned protecting the security of the area, then there needs to be provisions created so sheriff's can accept armed civilian help as needed and extend "qualified immunity" on a case by case basis.
